Pours a robust, deep reddish brown with a two-finger head that dissipates quickly. I'd never heard of this brew or the brewery, just thought I'd take chance. The nose reminds me of a scottish ale, like a "wee-heavy", and the taste matches that for the most part. Caramel, malt, maybe some brown sugar or molasses. Where it makes it's departure is the bitter floral hop finish. I'm a hop head at times, but really just couldn't get behind the hop profile in this brew. It simply unbalances it. Most reds have a similar, but more understated malt character with a bigger hop finish. This one is the opposite of that. To my tastebuds, this is reallly solid scottish ale with misplaced hops that kind of mess it up. It's still not horrible by any means.

LOOK: Pours a light amber, with an off white, soapy foam. Leaves lace going down the side of the glass. Good clarity, looks like a solid amber ale.

SMELL: Malty sugars, fusel alcohol, also smells a bit oxidized. Has the smell of European malts, reminds me of an imported Barleywine or dopplebock

TASTE: Nutty, toasted malts upfront with a pleasant savory sweetness. Malt extract comes to mind. There is a mellow earthy hop character with a hint of pine. Well balanced malts provide suggestions of cocoa, and there is enough bittering hops to keep things interesting. This I would consider a malt bomb, and a good one at that. Works well in the American Amber Ale style category.

FEEL: Medium bodied, light to medium carbonation. Very smooth on the palate, and leaves behind a yeasty coating.

OVERALL: A pretty decent ale here from bottle tree. Decadently malty, decent feel, the smell was just a little off. Everything else works here. Glad I got to try it. This was brewed by Thomas Creek brewery.

This is a new-to-me NC brew. I've seen around for a bit, but never grabbed any. My curiosity finally reached its peak, and snagged some last week. 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a really dark mahogany, very rusty looking. A small beige head rests on top. The aroma is really sweet with graham cracker, sherry notes, booze, cherries. An odd scent for an Amber Ale. Expected a bit more hops in the nose, but nothing.

The mouth is alright. A bit slick at times, mild warming alcohol noted. The alcohol comes out quite a bit in the flavor. The 7.5% is not hidden at all. Dark fruit flavors of raisin and cherry. Port-like finish. Molasses and crackers on the back end.

This one was odd. The flavors were sort of muddled and all over the place. No real hop presence noted. This is just a boozy fruity beer that I would pass on in the future.

12 ounce bottle poured into a Maudite snifter. Deep coppery amber with a foamy offwhite head of a finger or so. This reduces pretty quickly, but a collar of bubbles remains. Not much in the way of lacing.

Whole lotta carmelized stuff going on in the nose, but also a pronounced earthy hoppiness that seems somehow an odd match. The flavor profile is more rounded and more pleasant in general, although again, something about the hopping seems a bit awkward. Some toasted and even a touch of cocoa malt flavor in there with the carmelized sweeter business. Thickish with a modest carbonation that suits the beer well, and there's a pleasant buttery toffee element to the finish. It almost seems like a different variety of hops is all it would take to bump this up the enjoyment scale a notch or two.

Into a pint glass. Rusty brown color. Almost a finger of head... quickly gone though.
Smells like wood smoke and a little pine tree.
A little soapy taste, solid brunt bitterness, big malt backbone with a little sweetness to it.
A thicker medium body with low carbonation.
It's a good beer, but I'm just not excited about it.

Slightly hazed dark auburn, auburn, and caramel in color with a moderately sized light kahki colored head that leaves lots of irregular, messy, lined lacing down the glass. Very pretty and appropriate.

The aroma isn't particularly appealing, with some vegetable and cinnamon notes leading the way, surprisingly. There's some sweetness and an earthy hop character as well, but this doesn't have the best aroma, by any stretch of the imagination.

The flavor is better than the aroma, with an earthy hop character and some toffee-like sweetness emerging, along with a moderate bitterness, and just a touch of gourd vegetables.

Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation.

Decent enough, but unexciting. I don't need to revisit this one.

Thanks to jtd1969 for hooking me up with this bottle

A - pale, translucent amber; carbonation bubbles rising to the top; no head

S - bready, apples, caramel

T - sugar, caramel, apples

M - medium bodied, smooth, crisp

This is a rather mediocre beer. It has a strong apple character with an intense, sticky caramel character. I will avoid this in the future.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a reddish color and a clear consistency. There was an inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Great lacing.

S: Pretty much what you expect from a red ale: Hops, caramel, and malt.

T: Tasted of caramel, an average amount of hops, malt, a little citrus, and an earthy quality. A solid, but not spectacular flavor. Easy to drink, though.

M: A fair amount of carbonation with a bitter, yet smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A likeable, drinkable beer. Doesn't necessarily wow you, but is pretty good nonetheless.

Served from tap into a sampler shaker while at Thomas Creek, so direct from the source. Poured red-orange with a half finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, caramel, earthy hop, and caramel hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, caramel hop, earth, earthy hop, and fruit. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. I think having this one fresh on-tap at the source really made the difference on this one. Bottle Tree brews aren’t known for being my favorite by any means, but this one really wasn’t too bad. Lots of nice flavors going on here for the style, but nothing really stood out among the others I’ve had unfortunately. Worth trying fresh, but unfortunately I don’t know how it translates over to the bottle, yet. Tick.
