We like dinosaurs. We especially like Rexx, our prehistoric pal who wears clown shoes, drinks bourbon, and spends his doomed days in exile from the other Tyrannosauruses, choosing to romp with friendlier beasts. Rexx, we dedicate this Imperial Red Ale aged in Heaven Hill and Four Roses bourbon barrels to you, buddy!

Any review of this beer that doesn't begin with "Wow!" should immediately be discounted. The nose is deep and rich, with raisins and caramel pairing nicely with toasted bread crust, oak, and tons of bourbon. On the tongue, this one is boozy, with the bourbon heat taking command of a flavor profile that exhibits cured tobacco, brown sugar, and a burnt grass hoppiness through the finish. The first edition of Papaw's Red from Country Boy Brewing is probably the best Imperial Red I've ever tasted. This is its equal. Absolutely phenomenal beer.

Interesting. Different than most beers. Red in color, a bit sweet, nice beer.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep red beer which is more of a ruddy brown. The beer is topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger of light tan head which fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing.
S: Smells of bitter hops with some notes of pine and citrus along with a touch of caramel
T: Taste is faded citrus and piney hops with caramel and a touch of oak along with some bready toasted malts. hints of vanilla but mostly a dance between caramel sweetness and a fistful of oily hops. On the swallow this beer has another wave of oily hop goodness before sticky caramel and some drying oak come in on the back end.
M: This beer is fairly full in body with a slightly creamy feel on the palate. Carbonation is soft but is adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish.
O: Overall this is a really nice beer. Really good flavors and complexity along with everything being well balanced. No flavor note overshadows everything else and the beer has held up well to time. I wouldn't mind seeing this one come back. Clown Shoes artwork is always pretty dope too.

Pours mostly clear ruby red with a creamy off-white khaki colored foam head. Smells like toasty caramel malts, red fruits, watermelon, strawberry, dried fruit, bourbon barrel and earthy herbal hops. Tastes like toasted malts, dry caramel malt, not too sweet, toasted bread, dark honey, light caramel, dark toffee, molasses, mild chocolate, hints of red fruit like strawberry and cherry, melon, dried apricot, bourbon, oak barrel, vanilla, with earthy herbal piney hops. Feels medium plus bodied, creamy and slick with moderate smooth carbonation. Overall a nice bourbon barrel aged imperial red ale.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle 2018 version into the test glass.
A - Red cedar colored with nice clarity. A quick pour can coach a short lived froth, during the experience 4 ever present surface breaks are from that gentle carbonation.
S - Vanilla, bourbon notes are the theme, some toasted malts, and toffee, raspberry,a hint of sugar all add to the nose
T - Follows the nose well, not much deviation, with the exception of fresh fig.
M - A bit slick, semi sweet start stays through the experience. Linger is like candy
O - A very bid red for sure. I like the barrel treatment, well executed

Tap, 2015 aged

Pours mostly clear deep cherry red. Yellowish lacing for a head.

Aroma is of biscuit, toffee, brown sugar and fig.

Flavor is of rich caramel, toffee, fig, biscuit, maple and toast.

Fuller body, minimal carbonation. Boozy warmth going down.

Very rich and flavorful. Drinks slow but pretty smooth. Definitely worth a try.

This brew has a deep reddish-brown hue. A finger of tan froth fades into a smattering of lace. Molasses and various fruits such as persimmon, cherry and raspberry are strong to the nose. Taste involves more molasses, a drop of maple syrup and semi-tart cherries as well as a touch of caramel along with gum, pine and a lingering bourbon alcohol heat. A hint of cinnamon spice is noticed later. Medium in body, smooth and somewhat creamy, and has a nice amount of carbonation which keeps it a bit lighter than expected.

A very well-rounded take on a style that I haven't tried in a long while; one that frequently seems to get pushed aside in the rush toward the hazy/hoppy/sour brews.

Stoked to have this one on the shelf here, because I'm definitely going back for more.
