A coffee story from intro to epilogue. Black as night, oily texture, sweeter side with chocolate. The coffee wafts, it is much more coffee composition than coffee stouts. Some roasted malt. Good for what it is, it is surprisingly drinkable at 11% abv.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

The beer pours black in color with a finger of tan head. There is a huge coffee aroma to this. Quite a bit of oak with just a mild vanilla note. Some nice bourbon to go with roasted malt and brown sugar. The flavor has a touch of licorice and molasses to go with vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate. Really solid mouthfeel as well.

Poured from the bottle into a taster glass.

Pours near black with a thin mocha head. Not too much in the way of lacing. The nose carries some really nice cocoa and whiskey. Really nice combination and well done here. A bit of vanilla and oak in the background. The flavor isn't quite as intense as the nose, but still pretty good. Mouthfeel has a bit of heat, and could be a bit thicker. Overall, really a pretty tasty brew.

On tap at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thin streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is absolutely fantastic with dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, and huge coffee bean and coffee ground aromas. Taste is of dark roasted malt and a flavor very similar to tiramisu that has been dusted with cocoa powder and coffee grounds. There is a nice roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a medium body. Overall, this is a good stout with an outstanding aroma but the taste just doesn't match up.

Poured into an imperial nonic pitch black with a one finger deep mocha colored head atop that stuck like glue to the glass,no light getting thru this even when held up to the light.Mocha java aromas really stick out,wow like a Starbucks mocha java no joke.Heavily roasted flavors with only light alcohol imparted sweetness,faint smokiness lingers,the chocolate flavors are there but dont lend much sweetness just cocoa flavor.Thick and lush in the feel,hey to me Epic makes really really good beers and this is true to form.

Batch #9. Just jumpin' right on in: This stuff pours a deep black-brown topped by a finger of dark khaki foam. The nose comprises coffee, roasted malts, light dark chocolate powder, and the faintest hint of whiskey. The taste brings in more of the same, with the coffee taking control once everything else runs its respective course. I've heard other batches have been more whiskey-forward or whatnot, but this batch is decidedly coffee-heavy. This doesn't really detract all that much, as everything is delightfully balanced and expressive; I'm just sayin'. The body is a stolid medium, with a light moderate carbonation, a generally smooth feel, and a slightly dry finish. Overall, a very nice impy stout, one that shows what moderation can do for a barrel-aged beer. Good times, indeed.

Shared by Lunch the other day thanks! He told me it was described to him as a "poor man's KBS" but since this is slightly more expensive than KBS and not as good, I didn't understand why anyone would say that.

Beer is black with a thin tan head, low retention, some lacing, low carbonation.

Aroma is nice, coffee, sweet, a little chocolate, mild vanilla, no oak or bourbon.

I wouldn't have guessed this was a bourbon stout. I still don't really think so. This is a coffee stout to me, the coffee bitterness is there, the flavors are mostly sweetness up front, malt and a nice coffee finish. I liked it but probably won't have it again.

A: The beer is absolutely jet black in color. It poured with a two finger high dark tan head that died down a bit and left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a small collar around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of coffee beans n the nose along with some hints of roasted malts.
T: The taste shares some similarities with the smell in terms of flavors of coffee beans and also has notes of whiskey and hints of roasted malts The roasted toffee beans linger throuh the finish and overall become stronger as the beers wrms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: For a beer of this strength, the alcohol is well hidden from the taste.

#9: This poured out as a rich deep black color with a light brown head on top. There isn't much retention or lacing on this beer but it still looks nice. The smell of the beer has big amounts of coffee on the nose. It's got some whiskey notes as well to sweeten the beer. The taste is big and bold. The coffee is huge here, the chocolate and whiskey note fall into place in the aftertaste. There is a subtle sweetness in there too. The mouthfeel is slick and smooth. The beer is heavy and gently carbonated. Overall this beer is really good. Found this to be a great dessert after a big thanksgiving dinner.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours black with a firm creamy dark tan head, good retention, nice lace.

S: Like sticking my nose in a coffee machine, big heavenly coffee bean aroma, some secondary dark chocolate.

T: Coffee and chocolate dominated the first half. The second half gets quite hoppy and grassy, it reminded me of ST Creme Brulee in this aspect, hops when you'd never expect it. Big, full flavour.

M: Full-bodied, though it does feel a bit thinner at the finish than I'd like. Creamy, with a soft carbonation.

O: An interesting tasty beer for sure, like Peche Mortel meets Yeti. The bomber price is a bit out there, but a pour on-tap was a good deal methinks.

Amazed by this beer, pitch black pour into my Stone R.I.S. chalice, absolutely absorbed all the light in my glass. Big thicket of khaki tan head forms fine even bands of lacing between sips. A perfect breakfast beer, hair of the dog, basically smells and tastes like a coffee bomb with dark bitter chocolate and oak barrel aging effects smoothing things out a good bit. Espresso notes creamy vanilla and charred oak, this was one big complex Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout that I enjoyed immensely. Body wasn't cloying full to the max with flavor and texture, evenly carbonated...excellent offering. Overall I'm in love and I need to find more I only had one bottle and I need more of this nectar. I've officially been baptized!

Beer #62 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

So this is #9, which is aged in whiskey and bourbon barrels.

Hey now. Super tasty cocoa tones. It has quite a bit of coffee bitterness that seems to mesh extremely well with all of the characteristics of the beer. I get a very slight touch of vanilla that shows in a quite interesting way. Seems the perfect tone from a barrel, or the nicest way it could show.

I remember seeing someone on the boards here say that this was better than KBS, or something along those lines. Founders Breakfast Stout will always be one of my favorite beers, so I can't really go near that statement. But this is definitely a world class beer.

If this were bottled year round, and available at a cheaper price, this would be my go-to beer almost every day of the year. A pity it is such a rare release, but I am definitely glad I had a chance to try it.

Too bad this will most likely overshadow all other beers brewed in Utah I try from here on out.

A: Poured a big, hearty looking deep, dep brown color, nealry black with a a nice creamy tan head which resedes after a moment leaving a topping of bubbles and moderate lacing

S: The nose is BIG coffee, shit man, did someone just dump my grampas Folgers into my beer BIG. Loads of dark and milk chocolate on the nose as well. You can tell by the little booze sting that this beer is packin heat. I get a moderate dose of whiskey as well.

T: Initial big coffee upfront, wowzers, more Folgers coffee beans, nothing tame about this beer and I love it. A big assertive chocolate presence comes along riding the curtails of the coffee, a blend of deep dark cocoa and a little bit of milk cocoa. The whiskey is sharp, cutting but not overbearing as it knows its role with the coffee being the main stage. A bit of char and light tobacco come to mind as it continues to grow on me. The finish has a bit of an astringency which I find common in big coffee beers, like BCBCS.

M: Hearty, big bodied, perhaps a tweak high on carbonation. It provides a nice warming, coffee flkavor driven, coating mouthfeel thats makes me happy

O: I am glad I scored these. One left and I plan to sit on it for quite some time. Cheers.

From 01/28/12 notes. Shared with some friends, 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

a - Pours a pitch black color with one finger of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks great.

s - Smells of coffee, cocoa, roasted malts, bitter chocolate, whiskey, oak, and toasted malts. Lots of coffee for a whiskey barrel aged stout, but still very nice.

t - Tastes of coffee, cocoa, roasted malts, vanilla, coffee grinds, whiskey, oak, and choclate. Lots of coffee again, and some nice vanilla here. I like the taste a little bit more than the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth and not very hot.

o - Overall a really nice stout; one of the best beers I've had from Epic so far. I thought there was a lot more coffee then whiskey in the nose and taste, but still really liked it. Would have it again.

Batch #9 thanks to rudzud for sharing, and thanks to jedi111 (Reddit) for sending me a bottle I can save for the right time to share.

Pours a nice creamy darker but small head covering, light lacing, just about pitch black color.

Nose brings plenty of fresh espresso, roasted coffee beans, so much fresh coffee it almost seems like I poured some beer into my fresh espresso. Chewy oats in there, light chocolate, light wood dust, hint of roast, hint of dark chocolate, wood and oak dust and barrel, a bit Canadian Whisky like surprisingly but I think mostly due to the beer overpowering what would be whisky.

Taste again fresh coffee, roasted espresso, ground coffee, light chocolate, roast, caramel, vanilla, toasty oak and again some Canadian like whisky that tastes sweet, fruity, and gamey almost. there is some booze warmth as well, with the fruity whisky, a maple cream whisky like too. Chewy oats come in, with light caramel and more vanilla barrel, some bitterness from roasted malts but also light earthy spicy hops. Some light wood dust and oaky flavors in there rounding it just a bit and bringing all that vanilla. Finish is drier, light booze, chocolate, caramel, lots of fresh roasted coffee all lingering, a light bitterness as well, and light wood dust esters lingering.

Mouth is thicker bodied, decent carb, fairly rich, light warming booze.

Overall quite a nice beer. Great coffee, freshly roasted, as well as nice malt base, some hops kicking in with a decent touch, and booze is hidden fairly well. All that with nice barrel flavors and whisky def cuts in but not the best whisky, more Canadian like it seems, or at least seems due to influence from the beer, but can't get any bourbon. Still a great beer and I'm glad I got another one in the cellar.

22oz bottle into a tulip glass. This is from batch # 3.

Pours pitch black in the glass, with a finger of rich milk chocolate colored head. This retains with a strong ½ finger of froth, throwing up a robust cascade that quickly descends down and drenches the sides of the glass with spotty foam. The aroma smells robust to say the least, with notes of coffee and cocoa just erupting in the nose before giving way to flavors of vanilla, coconut, and more chocolate (which only picks up steam as this warms). The bourbon barrel rides along on the edges of this with some warmth but I have to say, that’s it’s the coffee here that really controls the nose overall.

The taste is quite rich up front, with a delicious mélange of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla, which runs into a wall of barrel character across the back that gives this some intenseness and finishes this dry, burnt, and warm. I think that decadent mix of flavors being up front helps, as it spreads out over the profile and aids in smoothing the rougher edges of this out. The mouthfeel is full bodied, with a nice chewy creaminess in the mouth that prickles the tongue a bit as well. The ABV itself is pretty well hid itself except for adding a little extra sweetness to this, with the bourbon here mostly giving this any burn that it has.

I’m usually more of a fan of balance in barrel-aged beers and this beer doesn’t excel at that, with coffee dominating in some areas, sweetness in others, and then bourbon yet again in other areas, but this just worked for me. Maybe it’s because each facet of this didn’t overly crowd the others but I found this to be a quite a pleasant sipper with a killer hidden ABV for 11%. Definitely pick this up though if you like coffee beers, as it is very well done in this.

Pours a dark chocolate brown color with a one finger mocha head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind.

Roasted malt aroma with a very strong coffee bean and dark chocolate presence along with a well integrated barrel character. Deep roasted gourmet coffee, dark chocolate, toast and oatmeal complimented by toasted oak. Subtle booze/whiskey in the nose.

Medium bodied with some tight carbonation and a very dry, roasted malt presence that dominates the flavor, lingering into a dry finish. Slightly acrid, heavily roasted coffee bean and bitter dark chocolate notes along with some toffee and oatmeal. Barrel character is most prominent toward the finish with dry, toasted oak complimenting the roasted malt profile and faint boozy whiskey sweetness providing warmth in the finish. Whiskey notes are there but subtle, allowing the other flavors to come through. As it warms the richness from the cocoa and dark malts shine but it's still a bit strong in the roast department for my liking.

Acquired in Los Angeles for $11.99 a couple days ago. Reviewed live. 11.4% according to my (2012) bottle. Release #10. 1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a New Belgium stem-goblet in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Expectations are high given its current ratings.

Served refrigerator cold but allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a 1.5 finger rich tan colour head of great cream, thickness, and retention (considering the high ABV). Body colour is a solid nontransparent opaque black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Solid for the style.

Sm: Cocoa, coffee, quite strong roast bitterness from the coffee, roasted barley, some stale coffee notes, and dark malts. Coffee/java is definiteley dominant. A moderate strength aroma.

T: Coffee (with some notable bitterness on the climax), some roast, java, subtle chocolate on the open, and whiskey - as subtle as can possibly be. Wow. A bit of malty sweetness. Coffee is dominant. Some caramel. Really marvelously balanced. I quite like it, though the bitterness does come through a bit too much on the finish.

Mf: Great. Ideal smoothness/coarseness balance. Good wetness. Perfect carbonation. Suits the flavour brilliantly. Great thickness to support the flavours. Actually not too heavy on the palate.

Dr: Very drinkable for the high ABV. I'm impressed. A very coffee oriented imperial stout. I could down this all night. Incredible. It's surpassed my expectations. I'd definitely have this again. Epic surprised me. I'd like to have it on-draught. Not a perfect example of the style, but a pretty damned good one.

Batch #3 care of joefc, thanks man! Bomber into a cervoise, the brew appears black with a finger of brown to khaki head that fades slow leaving some stringy lace sticking to the glass. A swirl revives about a finger back to the surface and paints some spotty lacing effect on the glass. When held to the light, the brew shows some ruby clarity through the body.

The smell is robust with earthy coffee. For being a year old at this point, it is still smelling pretty fantastic. I can only dream about how awesome the sumatra versions must be when fresh. The coffee imparts its own unique blend of citrus aspect mixed with hops. There is a raw oak quality about this that blends into the earthiness mixing with some mineral aspect that is almost dusty to rusty. The roasted aspect of the grain provides a bit of chocolate and a tang of whiskey becomes more evident as the brew warms up.

The taste is very roasty from a combination of heavily kilned grains and strong coffee flavors that are both earthy and include a bit of citrus coffee bean elements. Some warming alcohol is present with an accenting whiskey tang. The coffee's earthen aspect reminds me very much of kopi luwak for some reason. More sips reveal a bit of dusty to almost rusty mineral inclusion that while awkward at first dissolve away into a flavor of nothing but coffee and roasted grains that are at this point almost like milk chocolate with a bit of herbal hop flavoring.

This is a medium to lighter bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. I tip my hat to epic brewing company for making a seriously epic coffee stout. The alcohol is masterfully integrated and while the coffee flavors push to be almost excessive and overdone, it is fantastic. I need to try the other batches of this ASAP.

Picked this one up tonight at Brewforia Bown... Paid about $15ish... Christ .. Epic is getting pretty damn proud of their bottles :-) Seriously though, this is a great beer... Poured into my HotD goblet.... 3/4" dark tan head with little lacing atop an obviously black brew.. spotty lacing.

The aroma is amazing.... it immediately reminds me of Johnnie's Diner in McConnellsburg PA... 1st day of deer season... 4:00 AM.. Very Strong coffee... and NOW what I know as whiskey. :-) I was young... come on.. give me a break.

The nose is pretty phenomenal... tons of coffee beans.. lite cocoa... and there is a decent whiskey note that really doesn't jive as what I think of as "bourbon" ... almost an Irish whiskey nose.

Flavor has much more cocoa and a significant boost in the whiskey department... still right now, the coffee is the big player.. cold brewed and loving it.. the gears mesh perfectly .. cocoa nibs come across as milk chocolate with the lite malty sweetness..

I love that the "stout" flavors are in the background compared to the coffee and the cocoa... and whiskey... For a brew this big, it works very very well right now... I do NOT think this is an ager... whiskey notes come proud and sorta intrusive with warmth, but it still works. Coffee in beer drops off quickly.

I loved this brew.. Brewforia Chris hooked it up... Nice A quality beer easily.

Big thanks goes out to beeruser for sharing this one at a recent tasting! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller oversized wine glass. Poured pitch black with a half finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of roasted malt, coffee, caramel, and sweet alcohol. The flavor was of roasted malt, coffee, cream, wood, sweet alcohol, and espresso. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was an excellent brew. I truly went into this brew not expecting to like what I found. Fortunately, I was QUITE surprised! This thing really amazed me with all the flavors and aromas I got off it. They were so intense throughout while still remaining balanced. This one really wowed everyone at the tasting that evening. If you have constant access to this, I definitely envy you. If you don’t, you need to get this thing on your palate STAT!

Appearance: Pretty standard black bodied RIS appearance here, pouring with a couple fingers of leather-hued foam that settles to a thin film. Looks solid.

Smell: Not terribly subtle but thoroughly enjoyable coffee and cocoa up front. Gentle roastiness is noticed beneath, along with some molasses sweetness. Little bit of barrel peeks through, lending vanilla and faint alcohol.

Taste & mouthfeel: Coffee, cocoa and vanilla, in that order. The coffee used has a robust earthy, spicy note that's pretty nice. Pleasantly roasty malt backbone without any burnt qualities. The body is a solid medium-full, never approaching syrupy, and sweetness likewise is pretty reigned-in for an 11%er. Subtle bourbon barrel flavors here, I'm guessing this didn't spend much time in the barrel. The finish is long but mellow, very coffee-forward.

Overall: This stuff is pretty legit, I'm very surprised. It isn't quite in the same league as beers like BCBCS and KBS, but it isn't too far off.

Overall, a beast of a beer, but one thats worth fighting.

A smooth and medium to bigger bodied mouthfeel, with a note of dry coffee and small alcohol in the aftertaste. Dry coffee balanced with sweet cocoa, with a nice alcohol presence, very nice.

22oz bottle.

Pours dark mahogany out of the bottle but settles in close to black in the glass with a modest but thick tan head.

Man does this smell good, at least for a coffee lover like me. It's full of freshly roasted coffee beans. Some bitter chocolate and heavily roasted malts underneath, but the coffee is dominant in the nose.

Taste is like a big iced mocha. The chocolate is subtle in the nose but not in the taste where the chocolate is right up there with the roasted coffee. Roasted malts and some lactose creaminess. Wonderful taste.

The mouthfeel is much thicker and creamier than I was expecting from the pour. It's right up there with the big boys in terms of feel.

I'm reviewing this beer as a coffee lover and, because of that, it's an outstanding beer. One of the better coffee impy stouts I've had. Even if you're not a coffee fan, you should try this, but if you like coffee stouts, get this. Now.
