Rye Beer |  5.40% ABV

Notes:
Think freshly baked rye bread in a bottle with just a hint of lemon and spices from the hops and yeast. Both wheat-y and spicy with a light silky texture.

To me this was a classic example of a beer that tries far too hard and accomplishes far too little. For a rye base, the rye was remarkably faint which was not welcoming whatsoever. If I buy a rye beer, I intend to appreciate the complexities in the rye, but with this flavoring it was simply not possible. The intentionally numbing of the rye was intended to sharpen up the palate so it could appreciate both the citrus and earthy bready components. The other flavors however do not mix well with each other creating very separate unpleasant flavors. I was unimpressed here and will skip it next time.

Appearance has a hazy dark amber brown color supporting a fair dissipating head leaving spotty lace. Smell of mainly the rye, citrus with light malt, citrus and hop in the back. Taste is of bitter rye, sweet malt with a balance of hops. mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. Overall a fair rye.

1 pint 6oz bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It has an amber to deep amber body with three inches of tan head.

S - It smells like a loaf of marble rye on the end of a fishing pole (Seinfeld reference).

T - I taste all malt, but it is not too sweet. The rye does a decent job of balancing it out.

M - Thin to moderate

O - When I think of rye beers I guess I think of rye IPA's. This is not an IPA. It is a solid beer and a steal for the price, $3.99.

Beer #2 in the great Utah Brew Hunt.

I feel like I want to say that this beer is a rye pale ale. It has the rye tones to it, but it's mellow and smooth and not overly obnoxious, as many ryes tend to be. Easy to drink, and a nice low abv make it an easily sessionable ale. I could have dealt with a bit more punch from the rye, but I'll take this as it is.

A - dark amber with a thin lacing of off white head that quickly fizzles away

S - faint bread and citrus

T - apples, faint bread, faint citrus, faint pepper

M - crisp, medium bodied

I bought this in the discount section at Bestway in Greensboro so it may have been a bit dated. The rye was not very pronounced. The flavor wanted to be complex, but it each element was rather faint. I'll pass next time.

A: Pours a deep amber, with massive reds and slight oranges around the edges. There is about a half finger of foam that settles quickly into a thin film along the top of the beer.

S: The nose is rusty, metallic, malty, and spicy. Honestly, that's exactly what I am picking up form it. This beer smells like it's been sitting in a tin can for quite awhile.

T: It's sweet and buttery to start, with solid kick of rye coming in after. There is a subtle heat, and a definite rust bucket quality to this beer. The finish is sweet with mild spice.

M: Medium bodied beer. It's sweet to start, gets spicy and metallic in the middle, and backs down to mild spice and more sweetness in the finish. Caramels linger on the palate.

O: Mehh. This beer is middle of the road. I kinda like it, but it's nothing I'd ever buy again.

22oz brown bottle with a batch # on the label:

LOOK: Clear brassy hue, excellent lacing

SMELL: Bread, spicy rye, treacle, taffy, plums, broth, herbal, yeast

TASTE: Extremely smooth, creamy, medium body, spicy rye, toasted bread, modest hopping, sorghum, earthy, vague citrus, peppery, faint alcohol, semi-dry finish

A malt bomb that has more than enough rye in it to make its mark on the palate. Very well balanced and still pretty quaffable. Sometimes simple is better.

22 oz. bomber,

A: Pours amber with a medium white head, solid lace.

S: Cracked bread, rye spice.

T: Nice rye flavour, spicy with hints of citrus. Quite bready, nice mix of flavours, coriander on the back end.

M: Medium-bodied, lush at times, creamy, good overall feel.

O: A very solid rye beer from Epic and very inexpensive. I'll certainly buy this again. A rare sub-$4 bomber.

Release # 11. 5.5% ABV per the label.

Pours a murky light brown with a 1/2 inch foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small foamy streaks and dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is pretty subtle with some grain, rye, and corn tortilla aromas. Taste is of grain, rye, and a slight herbal hop flavor on the finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty average rye beer with some pretty weak aromas and flavors. One of my least favorite Epic beers so far.

Release 4, bottle lists 5.5% ABV

A - Pours a hazy, almost murky, burnt orange with one finger of off-white head. Head doesn't last too long, but leaves decent lacing.

S - Aroma is relatively subtle, but contains a nice amount of spicy rye, toasted malt and a hint of citrus. Enjoyable smell.

T - More citrus in the taste than the aroma, along with toasted bread malt, crisp rye and maybe a touch of caramel malt. This is well balanced and very tasty.

M - Medium mouthfeel with crisp rye and hop bitterness.

O - This is a really solid brew all around. Nice balance of malt, hops and rye, with nothing really dominating.

Cloudy dark amber in the glass like a Hefeweizen. Handsome foamy lacing and a nearly creamy mouthfeel. Lots of malt, though a bit murky, and plenty of hops. The rye seems to give it that special tangy graininess and enhances the bitter hops. A sharp taste like sourdough bread. A little malty sweetness in every sip followed by the long bitterness. A pleasant quaff and a good example of adding some rye flavors without tipping the boat over.

From the Salt Lake state liquor store along with several other Epic brews. I think it's Release No. 5 at 5.4% ABV.
