Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Chill-hazed gold in color, with a rather short head of bright white foam.
Aroma-Earthy hop note
Taste-Pale malt, Northern Brewer earthy hops, faint citrus in the finish, watery grapefruit zest. Light bodied but nice hop flavor. Quite sessionable at 4.0ABV. A good waiting-for-the-burgers-to-be-done brew.

As soon as you open this you get a whiff of what is going to be a decent ipa. The aroma is full, pleasant and hoppy. The look is cloudy and light with just a bit of head.

The taste is very bitter and hoppy. To an extreme, and thus, it is an American style. Well done. Does the rest of the world get this?

It lingers on the tongue with all that bitter rather nicely. Good marks all around. This is a good American ale.

Hobnobber is a very pale gold, something in the transition phase from yellow, and with plenty of haze to it. It's extremely bubbly at first, with lots of bigger bubbles clinging to the sides of the. The pure white head that forms is small but extremely compact. It's also got some good stick, though most of the lacing is left in a ring at the top, while some spotting and light patching follow below.
The smell is a bit too light to pull much out of, but I do get grapefruit. A bit of something herbal and a barely discernible note of bread from malts follows.
The flavor is as grapefruit-forward as the nose, followed by a lighter touch of the herbal note and a balancing malt. There's enough bitterness for a pale ale, but taming the flavor isn't what makes a "session IPA." This beer needs more strength and depth all-around to improve, but it's easy drinking. Pith blows suddenly into the finish for a lingering chalkiness on the palate.
It seems a bit too heavily carbonated in this light-bodied beer at first, but that calms down. The crispness doesn't fade but I'm not getting anything smooth here. It thins off at the end of the sip.

Tangerine and dark yellow made cloudy by countless tiny drifting specks of sediment. The head is thin and soapy. Decent lace.

Typical IPA-lite aromas - grassy hops and spicy citric notes. Grapefruit and orange. Cracker and biscuit; the pils malt is always a nice touch.

The taste isn't nearly as expressive as the aroma and is rather bitter. More grassy than anything. The citrus is stunted; only mildly zesty. Not much interference from the malts. Hints of cracker.

The body is light and carbonation is on the low side. It's to be expected, but the overall feel is on the thin side. Bitter finish.

Bitterness is not as harsh as it is with Chinookie, but it does hamper ease of drinkability.

So I had this beer earlier today and loved it. Decided to read some of the reviews on here and was astonished to find out that it rated well below what I expected. I figure I will give it some deserved respect. I didn't take notes so this is a review from memory.

Just some background. I found out that the hop additions are different for each batch. Luckily I think the batch I picked up may be one of the better ones. This one was brewed with Northern Brewer, Palisade, and Citra hops.

The beer is a hazy pale golden color with about a half inch of head and decent lacing left behind. The smell was of floral and citrus hops with hints of yeast. The taste is pretty much all hops with a touch of yeast esters. It has a great crisp citrus taste that overpowers the flavor, and the finish leaves a bitterness in the mouth common for IPAs. I will note that my bottle states 50 IBU and their website says 80 IBU. I'd say the 50 is correct for my bottle. The malts are all left behind (which is awesome for a session IPA), and this surprises me because of the malt bill listed on the bottle. Not a lick of alcohol in sight. This is a beer that would be perfect to bring to a party or cookout in the summer. The mouthfeel is a slight letdown, but far from watery IMO. I think they really nailed it with this one. This brewery is new to my area, so the bottle is probably <1 month old. Not sure of their dating but mine says best by August 2013. I'd put this one up there with All Day and Daytime (maybe even better). Also want to note, let this beer warm up some to let the flavors really shine. It was a little dull right out of the fridge. Recommended to anyone who enjoys hoppy beers.

Appearance - uncapped, this one starts a rise of bubbles up the bottleneck. Poured this foamer into a shaker, lots of head, three fingers at least. A bright cloudy light orange color, tendrils of bubbles streaming and screaming from below. Leaves the Devil's Tower of foam in the center as the head fades from around the sides.

Aroma - lots of grapefruit to this pale ale, some orange as it sets up.

Taste - caramel malts, a darkness to them that I like. The hops come in briefly sweet, then harshly bitter, then going rather pungent and unpleasantly bitter. I believe this one is on the edge of infection. Most of the flavor profile is strong and clean for the pale ale style, but the aftertaste is so harsh it is out of character. Good grapefruit essence mid-palate, not fading until the very end.

Mouthfeel - super carbonated, a little too much. Decent smooth feel.

Overall - even through the off-flavor, this is a good beer, a good session PA on draft I would imagine. I could see bumping the taste three or four notches without the infection. Another one from my brew buddy Steve.

Poured from a 12 FL OZ bottle into a pint glass. BEST BY MAY2013. LOT 270 (or 278).

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, unfiltered yellow-brown body with a thin white head that disappears quickly. Lots of sediment, little carbonation visible.

Smell: Aroma of citrusy hops. Very nice!

Taste: Very hoppy with an almost water-tasting body. It tastes like second runnings or weak tea. Extremely unbalanced.

Mouthfeel: Too watery for my taste. Needs a little body to it.

Overall: One can appreciate when a brewer tries to make a highly hopped, low ABV session ale, but this beer again proves why that is such a difficult proposition. This beer desperately needs a little malt body to back up its hoppiness.

Label says to look on the website for the hops used, but there is nothing listed there. Nice malt body with a pretty good level of spices. Overall it's pretty rich for the style. Much more so than you would normally see. It's still pretty good though. I can dig it.
