FULL PINT : Rye Rebellion

STYLE: American Imperial Stout

LOOK: Dark brown bordering black. Off white lacing.

SMELL: Roasted malt and vanilla aromas are quite nice to the nose.

TASTE: Smokey flavors, some dark fruit, spicy rye. Alcohol flavor is well integrated but not overstated. Woodsy notes of whiskey and oak, to go along with earthy hops. Mild peppery rye and intense roasted malts with some chocolate and coffee flavor. Certainly has a good deal of bitterness.

FEEL: Medium bodied. Well carbonated.

OVERALL: Perhaps my favorite beer made by Pittsburgh's Full Pint Brewing. It's good beer. Drink it.

I had this on tap at Holy Hound in York, served in a tulip

The color is black, no light passes through, very viscous looking with a head the comes and goes but revives when swirled with fine bead. lace is basically legs on the glass. The smell is very good with some nice cocoa and slight fruit esters which are current-like with mild toast, biscuit and light coffee with some mild spice. The feel is very good, full feeling without an abundance of sweetness, there is a nice balance of malt roasted texture and light yeast with subtle alcohol and mild bitterness.

The flavor is excellent with a malt body that is not overly bitter or burnt but has a mild chocolate malt character with slight creaminess of yeast adding to the taste with some mild toasted and coffee-like flavors which never really come off as overly roasted with slight spice and hint of caramel. Overall I really enjoyed this, the alcohol was mild and the complexity was there with a great sense of balance It did not have the impact of other 11% beers I have had recently a very smooth and drinkable Imperial Stout

On tap at the Pine for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week! Served in a 12 oz snifter.

A- Body is a menacing dark brown, nearly black. Served with a 1-2 finger creamy tan head. Some lacing is left behind in the glass. Held up to the light side by side with Big Eddy this brew was much darker and richer in color.

S- Balance. Great Balance. Dark Chocolate, Roasted Malt, Oak Barrel, Whiskey, rye, malt everywhere.

T- Flavor is very similar to the nose. The base beer is moslty present upfront with that signature rye backbone. A lot of barrel comes through for the finish-but it balances well with the base beer and does not overwhelm it. There is a big alcohol warmth at end and a moderate, balance flavor-but none of the associated astringency.

M- Exceptional. Low to medium carbonation and a thick, deep, very smooth, complex body.

O- Overall this is a fantastic stout. I love hoppy rye beers because they add such a smoothness to the mouthfeel but I didn't realize what a difference it would make in a stout. Fantastic job by Full Pint in putting this one together. I bought a four pack and I hope its just as good bottled.

Poured a blackish body with one-finger tan head that died quick on top of a malty aroma; mix of roasted (touch of coffee) malts and some sweet caramel and chocolate but very little rye. Hard to pinpoint "the rye" is; it's like a strong stout that gives off a dry, bready, woody feel with roasted and coffee malts and is balanced with some caramel and chocolate (hint of vanilla). Medium-bodied, chewey, smooth, finishes real dry and not sure how much rye is lending itself to dryness and how much of this is ABV, although the high ABV is contained. A really good if not complex stout.

A - Pours out of the tap with a thick black body...the head stood one finger tall and was brown in color...it receded to a thin ring but still left decent lacing

S - The aroma changes and opens as it gets warmer...chocolate and coffee, roasted malts, woodiness, charcoal, hint of whiskey/alcohol

T - Just as the nose, the flavors open as the beer gets warmer...there is a big roasted flavor that is present throughout the beer...nothing really challenges it at any point...the only sweet flavors coming through are a hint of vanilla and some dark fruits...chocolate and coffee are present throughout, with the coffee providing some bitterness...I don't necessarily pick up the rye flavor, but there is a nice barrel/whiskey/woody characteristic that is lingering...the alcohol presence is kept to a minimum

M - Full bodied...low carbonation, smooth, and big

O - This was a very nice surprise...I didn't hate this, but I also didn't find it amazing...it's great for the balance of flavors...I'm glad it wasn't overly sweet or boozy...the barrel notes were just right and it had a cast of supporting flavors...nicely done

On-Tap into Pint Glass

Appeared a deep, dark black with two fingers of dense, tan head. Smelled of chocolate, coffee and malt. The smells come through immediately in the taste with a very slight bitter finish. The use of rye in this beer is evident as the heavy flavor and body of a typical stout are thinned out nicely. Overall, an excellent rye stout that is well-balanced and very easy to drink. Will certainly have it again.

On tap at the brewery. Poured into a Full Pint pint glass. Served pretty damn cold. Aged in Jack Daniels barrels.

A. Extremely dark,black body with a half inch mocha colored head. A tiny bit of spotty lacing stuck on the glass.

S. This was served cold so it muted the smell a good amount.I get a bit of roasted notes with chocolate. Faint whiskey comes through in the end.

T. At first I get good chocolate and roasted notes,maybe some cocoa. The beauty comes as this warms up! I will say that this is not a whiskey bomb but very well balenced. The whiskey and barrel characters come through nicely. A ton of vanilla, with a small amount of oak,it doesn't hide the base beer but lets it come through with chocolate and roast and rye.

M. Very good chewy full body. Heavy feel. Low carbonation. clean finish.

Overall I was very suprised and pleased of this beer. Get it while you can,because they are only going to bottle this once again till January. Must try!

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

Served in a snifter, a dark black liquid, opaque, with a nice compact cap of brownish head. Aroma of dark roasty malts and cocoa beans. Taste was very nice, dark malts, moderately roasty, not too sweet, cocoa, pumpernickel, a hint of ash, and a drying whiskey quality. Mouthfeel was pretty smooth, heavy-medium body, and the alcohol was pretty well hidden. A very nice drink overall.

Rye Rebellion pours out black with a small head. The aroma is a bit muddled, with the rye barrel not quite integrating with the base beer - although the base is apparently brewed with a good portion of rye malts. The taste is much better, with some chocolate flavors at first that get kicked in with a big rye character from both the rye malts and the rye whiskey barrel. The whisky flavors are forward, but not boozy. More of the whisky becomes evident on the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is very smooth with a nice thickness, and the drinkability is fantastic. Although it's not the greatest imperial stout I've had by any means, something charmed me about Rye Rebellion. It's a bit rough around the edges, but the rye whiskey character really works with these rough edges. It doesn't hurt to like drinking ryes to begin with though.

This is a pretty solid double stout. There really isn't much deviation on the flavor profile. Only very mildly boozy, which doesn't seem to fit for an 11% beer. Very malty. Seems to be some chocolate on there, but not a ton. This is actually a pretty smooth and nice drinking double stout. Pick it up if you see it.

Bottle > Winter Lager Glass

A - Pours absolute black, no transparency, a thin fizzy rustic brown head that fades swiftly.
S - The whiskey is no joke, you smell its presence instantly, some chocolate, vanilla, a little fresh roasted coffee, and sweet malts.
T - Whiskey, chocolate and other sweet malts, a touch of bitterness, some coffee roasts, hazelnut, whipped cream. Pretty complex, but not overbearing in any one certain area, its very balanced for what it is.
M - Flat out incredibly smooth, you dont get a major alcohol burn at all, and it leaves a very pleasant flavor with you for a long time.
O - All around solid, this is better than KBS for me for sure. A very complex Stout that distributes its traits evenly, and is not boozy or overbearing, but incredibly masks the 11%. Disturbingly smooth, yet outrageously rich in flavor. Excellent brew.

Poured into a tulip.

4.5 A: Black color. One finger of light brown creamy/frothy head. Retention is very good given the ABV and a good sized ring of lacing is left.

3.5 S: Lots of smoke in the nose is the first thing you'll notice. Spicy rye, but also some tannic astringency from the barrrel. Plenty of roastiness, light chocolate, earthy mineral, and a touch of ash. Dry overall with not quite enough molasses to balance it out. Booze is well hidden.

3.0 T: The taste isn't bad, but it's missing balance. It's too dry, roasty, and charred without having enough sweetness to make it work. Heavy roast, burnt toastiness, some tannic astringency from the barrel, and smokiness. Light chocolate, molasses, coffee, and currant. Rye adds an earthy spiciness and some light booze.

3.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Not a lot of creaminess, but not none either. Not bad here.

3.25 D: I usually like Full Pint brews, but it looks like they haven't figured out the barrel aging yet.

This poured out as a thick black brew with a thin creamy mocha colored head on top. The lacing leaves some streaks on the glass, the retention is minimal but leaves some bubbles around the edge of the glass. The smell of the beer is roasted with a creamy chocolate aroma and some subtle spice, smells soft though, not boozy at all. The taste of the beer is sweet, lightly roasted and spicy. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and creamy, there is a dense thick body to it with a gentle carbonation. Overall I was pleased with this beer, wasn't sure what to expect but I liked the outcome.

Pours black, dark brown at the edges. Looks thick. Small brown head. Only a thin coating of little brown bubbles remain after a minute. Aroma has a relatively restrained rye character, compared to many whiskey barrel aged stouts. Lots of chocolate and caramel sweetness. It has a sweet, rich flavor. The barrel character gives the beer greater depth without taking over, just a nice kick of rye spice. The taste has a bit more rye flavor. Pretty health whiskey spice kick. Lots of sweet chocolate, again. Some vanilla and oak show up. Mouthfeel is smooth and nice, but the beer drinks a bit smaller than its abv. It's just a little too light. This is a good beer. Nice to find an imperial stout that spent time in a rye barrel and even nicer to find that the barrel didn't completely take over.

Had this on 2012-12-18 i8n Columbia, PA

A - Dark brown with a short dark tan head with an aggressive pour. The headed faded completely away in 30 seconds. Mild lace.

S - Rye whiskey, medium-dark roast, molasses, semi-sweet chocolate, alcohol.

T - Tart apples, sour cherries, char, dark roasted grain, cacoa, vinous, tannin, bitter citrus. Alcohol is apparent but reasonably well-integrated. Initially finishes with a decent balance between the molasses sweetness and roasted/hop bitternes but ltowards the end of the glass, I enjoyed the long-lasting aftertaste less due to a lightly sour, earthy metallic tang (probably the rye flavor); I don't want to make too much of this though, since I did enjoy the taste of the beer. but it reduced my appreciation.

M - Medium body and light carbonation. Somewhat creamy, prickly, sticky. Coats the mouth nicely.

O - Interesting stuff. There are quite a few flavors going on with this brew. I liked the fact the bye bourbon barrel flavor wasn't dominant as is too often the case with this style. I'll look forward to having it again..

12oz bottle poured into a snifter

Sits an ink black with one finger of brown foam. The cap falls quickly to form a thin collar.

The nose presents some metallic notes along with bakers chocolate, rye, and faint whiskey. Some mild roast comes out as it warms.

There's a good amount of rye in here. Dry, earthy rye hangs over notes of bakers chocolate, and mild whiskey. Bitter roast carries mid-palate. There is a long lingering rye flavor.

Medium feel, smooth carbonation and an easy feel.

I'm not so sure I would call this an imperial, but it is a solid beer. Whiskey is faint, loads of rye. Good beer, but not great.

I read the description of this beer's promo before it came out & ran to the bat-signal. As usual my personal Bruce Wayne, beerisheaven, came through with flying colors: a little growler before it was bottled, then the bottles. Definition: good guy. 12 oz. bottle.

Pour is stout dark, darker than the night sky that's weirdly lit up right now. Smell is rye, whiskey, sweet malt, & roast. That's a good smell. Smear it on a door handle & I'll lick it. Unless it's below freezing.

Rye Rebellion is a cause I'd sign up for. The rye whiskey raises a lovely cloud of good that hangs over the beer. The rye malts slink underneath, but for the quantity, they're less aggressive than I'd imagined, mostly showing as an earthiness with a shadow of spice in the middle. Roast comes in full throttle. Ends with a lovely stab of vanilla & more bitter roast. Smooth despite all the roast. 12 ounces? I'd do 22. Or 25.4. Or just a hose hooked up to the local supply.

Excellent beer. Plenty of stuff going on & the sum is as good or better than the parts.

App- Took on a very unique coloration. When it poured it looked like a chocolate color as it settled it was more red/brown cordial like. Zero bubbles or cling or lace.

Smell- Opens with a large amount of whispy booze with a large amount of rye. Next came the oak and the prickly whiskey aromas. Malts tie it all together. A bit scattered but okay.

Taste- Opens very spicy and rye forward. Has a thicker malt backbone than I was thinking and a smaller chocolate malt addition as well. Small whiskey prickly flavors. A little unbalanced but still better than average.

Mouth- A lighter medium body with a paired carbonation level. Residual malts and rye prickly booze are there but need to pop more.

Drink- Rye whiskey stout had me intrigued. Didn't last long as was okay. Couldve been a touch better.

Pours black with khaki colored head. No light penetrating when held up to the light.

Rich chocolate aroma, very smooth at first and then the spiciness of the rye and the heat sting the nostrils.

The taste follows the nose. Rich chocolate, spicy rye, a touch of oak and vanilla.

Medium bodied with an appropriate amount of carbonation. Coats the tongue with each sip. Almost like adding a new coat of paint every time it goes across my tongue. Semi drying finish with some heat.

Overall, this was a decent brew. Good but not great. I like the concept of the rye barrels but I wanted it to have a little more depth. Worth checking out for sure. I wouldn't mind having another once the weather cools down.

Gotta be the weirdest beer ive had this year, that's not to say it was bad, actually it was pretty good. but ... The beer it reminded me of most was Weyerbacher Tiny, without the chocolate and the Belgian yeast complexity.

Poured into my 1 oz taster at times this had big head, tons of bubbles that would rate a 5, into my snifter an average 3. Into my convenience coffee cup, the usual 4. So; 4.

Nice aroma of oak, wood, little smoke, can't wait to taste this. And here's where it got weird, an amazingly tart cherry, grape like vinous assault on the palate, again very similar to Tiny without. Then again, I did detect a barleywine like sweetness to the aroma

Decent mouthfeel, spritzy like Coca Cola on the tongue.
Drinkable, and it was delicious, but not what I was expecting
ting at all. If this is what Rye whiskey tastes like, ok then. But i don't get any whiskey character.

So overall, it's a tasty beer, albeit mislabeled. When I want this taste, I'll just grab a Tiny. Weird.

Pours a midnight, sludgy black with a small tan head that lingers.

Smells of chocolate, sweetness, some oak, vanilla, and just a hint of bourbon.

Taste is up front bready, toast chocolate that goes into a more sweet, bready middle before ending on a slightly oak-whiskey character with a coffee and vanilla finish. This is damned nice actually...really well balanced all around. I HATE when the bourbon character takes over BA beers, but this is spot on in balance.

Full body with low carbonation is right on.

Damned fine BA beer that balances all the flavors nicely. I don't get much rye character necessarily, but this is absolutely worth your money.

Poured from bottle into a snifter

Appearance – The beer pours a thick deep brown almost black color with a one finger tan head. The head is small but has fantastic retention with it fading very slowly over time to give a very nice amount of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is heavy of roasted dark bread and very light amount of dark fruit. These aromas are mixed with a light chocolate a good dose of a boozy aroma.

Taste – The taste starts out of roasted malt and some sweet dark fruit and caramel taste. These tastes slowly transition in the middle losing some of the dark fruit flavors with the bready flavors getting more intense toward the middle. The breadiness is mixed with some chocolate and a bourbon flavor that intensifies to the end of the taste. In the end the taste is nice of chocolate-rye whisky with notes of booziness, cocoa and rye bread.

Mouthfeel – The body is very thick and smooth and coats the tongue with all the flavors of the brew. The initial sweeter tastes and the later more bitter/boozy tastes really get to sink into the tongue. The carbonation level in some ways takes away from the creamy body however as it is slightly higher than normal for a beer of this beers strength. While slightly over-carbonated, the mouthfeel is still overall quite good giving a nice warming feel.

Overall – This beer has some very nice characteristics. It has a nice look good roasty and bourbon flavors that transition well throughout the taste as well as a very nice creamy body.

A: It pours out of the bottle a motor oil black color with a nicely sized light brown head. The lacing and retention are phenomenal 4.5

S: The aroma is of roasted malts and chocolate mostly, with underlying notes of rye whiskey. More roasted than I expected, but none of the ABV is noted. 4

T: A decent amount of Rye noted on the taste, but really it tastes like nothing more than a roasted stout instead of one aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels. Nicely chocolately with the roast and rye showing up on the backend. 3.5

MF: The body is thick and full with a very dry finish. The ABV is hidden marvelously, but the roast makes it not the most drinkable of stouts. Very dry throughout. 4

O: I expected more here, but I didn't hate it. Worth the $3 I paid for the bottle. I wanted more whiskey and more balance. I'd say give it a shot of you see it, but don't expect to be blown away. 3.5

12oz bottle into a 25cl Duvel tulip. Thanks, Tony, for sharing.

A: Pitch black, pretty flat. Leaves orange legs. Intense, but not too impressive.

S: Spicy and roasty, with dark chocolate, char, coffee, and spicy rye. Plenty of booze.

T: Follows the nose - intense, roasty, boozy. Pretty raw, with a touch of vegetable weirdness. Not that good, unfortunately.

M: Medium-thick, well-carbonated. Nice.

O: This one sounded promising, but never really delivered on its potential. There were some nice things going on in the aroma, but the booze and vegetable off-notes really dominated the flavor. Too bad.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Dark black without a head or lacing.

Smell - Barrel aged stout, malts, vanilla, alcohol, smokey, oak, brown sugar, slight hop aroma.

Taste - Nice, strong bold whiskey and malt heavy stout. The rye flavor comes alive with the chocolate, vanilla and added sugars. There is a presence of spices also that add some balanced flavor. Alcohol is strong but not overboard.

Mouthfeel - Thick, strong with plenty of flavor. Tounge gets the malts, whiskey and vanilla. The hops come in and hit palate with a little bitterness. Alcohol is present throughout and adds warmth. Aftertaste is malty with whiskey overtones.

Overall - Really nice beer, done well. I dont get alot of rye but what rye i do get, isnt nothing impressive. Id rather see some coffee and more chocolate flavors in this, cause i think it would really work well. A solid beer, worth a drink for stout and whiskey barrel aged fans.
