Aroma: Boozy and caramelized sweetness up front. Moderate piney resins. Moderate fruity esters.
Appearance: Slightly hazy brick red pour with a white head that retains well.
Flavor: Piney and lemon rind hop flavors up front. A touch of caramel and a bit of tea-like leafiness mid-palate. Balance is decidedly bitter. Finish is clean and dry.
Mouthfeel: Definite alcohol heat with a medium body and medium-high carbonation. A touch of astringency.
Overall impression: Hmm...didn't get the fresh hop aroma and bright flavors I would expect in a Double IPA. Doesn't seem to have enough malt to be an American Barleywine. Lost in a style space where it's coming up short. Freshness could be the issue. Enjoyable but not sure about a repeat performance.

Full Pint Brewing : TRI-PA
LOOK: Pours a medium amber brown, soapy white head and some lace. Looks thick as hell, and pretty dark for a imperial Pale ale.
SMELL: Lofty alcohol, candied orange, dark fruits and toffee. As it warms, the booze and caramel stick out as the aroma.
TASTE: Caramel, toffee, and lots of booze. There certainly is a woodsy, piney note and a bit of citrus to remind that there are three varieties of hops in this beer. The caramel, plum, and alcohol make this brew much more akin to an English Barleywine. If this were labeled as such, the score would change, but for an American Double India Pale Ale, this is a few notches below average.

Tri-PA pours out a hazy light brown color with a small head that leaves spotty lacing. The aroma is piney hops and caramel malts. The taste is basically double IPA by the books. Piney hops over a solid caramel malt backbone. It's tasty, but doesn't do anything that hasn't been done by, say, DFH 90 Minute. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and lightly carbonated, and the drinkability is good. Overall, it's just a solid DIPA. Nothing wrong with that.
