Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a deep brown colored brew with a one finger tan head. The head fades relatively fast to give a moderate level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is big in roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Mixed with these smells are some lighter notes of some brown sugar and a little bit of dark fruit. Overall, it is quite a tasty smelling brew.

Taste – The taste starts out more roasted malt and brown bread in flavor. Soon the coffee comes to the tongue along with some of the brown sugar sweetness that was detected in the nose. As the taste advances further the chocolate then comes to the scene, melding well with the coffee flavor to produce a mocha taste. These flavors slightly bitter the brew in the end and leave a rather satisfying flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was rather thin with a carbonation level that was on the slightly higher side. The body was too light, and to allow the nice chocolate and coffee flavors to shine, a thicker body would be necessary.

Overall – While it had all the right flavors, it lacked the body to hold them up. Just a bit more in the body and the brew would be wonderful, but without it, in some ways it is akin to drinking watered down gourmet coffee.

I dont know what it is about coffee beers, but when trying a new one, I'm always a bit apprehensive. It's always nice to be pleasantly surprised that someone was able to pull off the job in smooth fashion. And that's what we've got here: a nice easy drinker that takes hold of all the characteristics you'd hope for a real pleasant drinker.

First had: on tap at Iron Abbey, Horsham, PA

Poured a dark woody brown color, translucent, with a foamy cap of off-white head that retained well and left a nice layer of lacing. Aroma was coffee-forward, notes of dark malts and cocoa. Smooth coffee taste, dry and not so bitter, backed up with a good roasty maltiness that made it a beer and not a cold cup of coffee, woody, with a touch of cocoa, and a dull earthy hop finish. Robust but not overblown, medium-bodied, and quite drinkable.

Served on-tap at the Brass Rail into a standard pint.

A - Pours pitch black with a small half finger khaki colored head leaving light lace down the glass.

S - Smells of dark roasted coffee, earthy hops, chocolate, and the ever present dark roasted malt. The coffee is a little bitter, combining with the hops to almost for a black ale.

T - Starts off with a big dose of bitter coffee slowly giving way to a mix of dark roasted malt, chocolate, bitter hops, and some light fruitiness. The finish is mostly dark roast with some light bitterness, lingering on the pallet for some time.

M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Roasty, hoppy, feel that lingers on the pallet.

O - This one is OK. Like a cheaper version of Troegs Dead Reckoning honestly. I didn't have a problem finishing it but I won't be rushing out to get another.

Pours a dark brown cola like color with a tan head which gave way to some good lace. The aroma was of coffee and chocolate with a hint of roastiness. The taste had a coffee and chocolate taste but I got more of a roasty flavor than anything else. The tatse was very solid though. The mouthfeel was low to moderate carbonation. Overall it was solid porter, it was an easy drink with solid flavors.

Grabbed a pint of this last night at the Rivertowne for 4.25 Whoot local!

A - Pours a solid black amber. You can see through it but just barley. The thin 1/4 inch layer of mocha colored head left a nice bit of sticky lacing.

S - Not as strong as the name implies but I do get soft tones of roast and chocolate. Kind of like a cappuccino!

T - I was glad it had a very balanced taste of coffee without being too bitter. Roast flavors are the best part of this beer which are light to medium tones and I do get a distinct chocolate but not bittersweet or bakers. More cocoa but not dry. Didn't really pick up any hops but that's what I like in my porters, more malt!

M - Drank with a nice medium body. Sweet but not cloying. I sipped it pretty quickly.

Overall it's not the best coffee beer I had but ranks up there with balance. Not extreme or immensely flavorful like other coffee beers but light and flavored enough to have a six pack. Would be happy to pick up a six pack if I found it at a local bottle shop. Hook a brotha up!

Whilst I was ducking into Smoking Joe's on Pittsburgh's South Side for one last beer for the night, I spotted this little number from Full Pint. Purc E Bust poured out dark and with a nice thick brown head. You can immediately smell not just the aroma of coffee, but quality roasted coffee. The core of this hometown brew is made up of Guatemalan coffee beans from The Commonplace Coffee Company in Squirrel Hill. This beer starts sweet, but is balanced out nicely with roasted malt for a nice smooth finish. Fans of quality porters will notice that this craft brew can hold its own against more expensive brews. All in all, this a beer Pittsburghers can be proud to call their own.

Pours a deep amber to black in color with a light brown head. In the aroma, coffee, and a roasty malt, a bit bit sweet too. In the taste, dry coffee, and a small sweet to dry maltiness. A small bite and a medium to light bodied mouthfeel, with a dry coffee in the aftertaste. A bit thin, but a nice big coffee presence.

On tap at Fat Heads Pgh

A: Pours a deep dark brown color with a nice one finger tan foam head. Some decent lacing.

S: Lots of roasted coffee, milk chocolate, campfire and vanilla.

T: Starts off on the sweet side, the milk chocolate definitely the most predominant. In the middle a charred coffee bitterness starts to balance out the sweetness and lasts throughout the finish.

M: A slight slick taste on the palate. A very nice medium bodied beer.

D: A really solid Porter from Full Pint. Easy to drink on a nice cold day or in the evening for dessert.

This is a very pleasant coffee porter. It has a ton of character, and it is all good character.

It opens nicely to reveal a nearly opaque brown. The aroma is pretty but faint. Coffee and chocolate are there, but not in your face.

The taste is balanced to more yeasty than a porter normally is, to great effect. It tastes like a bigger beer than it is.

This is so far my favorite from Full Pint. You gotta love the label. Very robust.

Not to get overly literal here, but "perky" and "huge" aren't synonymous words. On to the beer.

It's a solid dark brown, too dark to see through. It grows a nice tan head to a bit higher than one finger. Retention is good, as the head lasts the entire way and never falls very much. A good amount of patchy lacing sticks to the glass.
Malts don't show off too much roast in the nose; even though the coffee offers it, it focuses more on the coffee notes pre-roasting, it seems. It's got porter strength, which might take the huge stout drinkers some getting used to , but it's good if not simple. In the flavor, a bit more roast kicks in. Coffee is less subtle, which is something that works slightly against the aroma.
These days, it seems porters need to be defended for not being huge. The body in this beer is right, giving medium strength to hold it together without weighing it down. Carbonation is moderate, flowing nicely without being too crisp but both crisp and smooth enough.

pours a chestnut brown with light edges and a fuzzy bubbly light brown head. Nose is fairly nice, chocolate fudge and cake batter with a nice rich roared coffee note subtly accompanying. Taste is a bit watery and much more roasted with a tinge of burnt coffee. Still a decent cakey type quality but much more muddled than the nose. Body is lighter with a gentle to low carbonation and dry chocolaty finish that lingers a bit.

P- AOH

A-coffe black in color that is opaque and a 2 finger head that is foamy and tan. Leaves a nice lacing.

S- chocolate and roasted coffe hit the nose. Nice combo.

T- strong coffee bean and roast flavor. A smokey end on the flavor as well.

M- medium bodied and more carbonated than i would like from my porters. Not as creamy as one would hope but not bad.

O- This is not a bad porter. I am not a guru of porters to begin with but i have had worse and better.

Look at that label! Anyway, This beer poured out as a dark black color with a brown head on top. Some thing retention on top without much lacing at all. The smell of the beer is chocolaty, roasted and has plenty of coffee on the nose. The taste of the beer is nicely balance, it's got some sweet grains in there along with the coffee to bitter it up a little. The mouthfeel of the beer was well carbonated, it go smoother as you drank it. Overall it's not a bad beer but I've had better coffee beers.

Appearance - Dark tan/black, 1/2 creamy head and some lacing.

Smell - Smokey malts, molasses, coffee, dark fruits, plum, rasin, added brown sugars, some cocoa and a little chocolate.

Taste - Huge coffee and roasted malts are main flavor. Dark chocolate mixed with some cocoa and a little chocolate also adds flavor. Some molasses and brown sugars add some sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Medium thickness, tounge gets the coffee, chocolate and smokey malts. Palette gets dark fruits, malts and coffee. Aftertaste is coffee bitter and a little chocolate sweetness.

Overall - A nice coffee porter, smooth, flavorfull and easy to drink. No alcohol is present, and its balanced pretty well. For sure a good beer that you can enjoy even if your aint a big coffee fan.

Had a bottle at Liberty St Tavern. I like a good coffee porter, but I didn't get any java or mocha, and instead found the dark grains to be unfortunately thin. There was a mellow caramel and a little roast, but no big black roast or cocoa. But the body was at least light, you know, so I could move on to the next beer quickly.

I poured this one aggressively and was awarded a finger of nice brown head. The body is so dark brown it's almost black. Head goes down (giggidy) after a few minutes, leaving a thick, healthy ring and dusting. Good amount of lacing attempts to cling to the glass.

Dark malt, a hint of dark fruit, dark coffee and a hint of chocolate. Simple yet elegant.

The flavor starts off malty and quickly brings in the coffee. It tastes like a light roast, and is quickly backed up with a little more malt and some hints of chocolate.

The body is light to medium. The carbonation is a little fizzy, and it's certainly easy drinking, but it has a light creamy quality to it once you start swallowing the beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. capped bottle (no date) into a pint glass.

A moderate pour yields a 1-finger tan-colored head that slowly recedes after a few minutes to a thick dusting and thick foam ring. The body is a dark brown that nears black with no traces of color when held to light. Decent lacing can be seen throughout consumption but little seems to stick around.

The nose is basically comprised of aromas of dry, roasted coffee beans, black coffee, and dark chocolate. While not the most deep or complex, this nose is enjoyable and sets you up perfectly for the taste.

Flavors of bittersweet and dark chocolate impact the palate immediately with flavors of black chocolate and unroasted coffee beans quickly noticed as well. Swallowing releases more of the aforementioned flavors with a bit more emphasis on the coffee. As these flavors subside, a dry coffee flavor begins to really stand out ends up lingering on the palate as an aftertaste.

The body on this beer is surprisingly light considering its appearance. Even though it does allow plenty of flavor to come through, it is still very drinkable and rather refreshing. The carbonation is a bit fizzy, especially in the swallow, which contributes greatly to this beers drinkability and refreshing character.

Pours dark brown, almost black with practically no head. The nose is rather bland - nothing much there. There is some roasted malt flavor, but this offering is pretty thin in general. Also, I am not really picking up any coffee tones in this beer. Kind of a flop!

12 oz bottle: This one pours a fairly opaque darker brown color. There was a small tan head that didn’t linger long or leave much in the way of lacing. The aroma is good. Coffee and chocolate malt are predominate. Some hops are in there too, but they are hard to determine exactly what they are. The taste is very good. Fair amount of the coffee on to, with some chocolate malts in the background. Dryness to the finish. Lots of hops being hidden back there. Nice. Definitely helps to be a coffee lover for this one!

A - The body bordered on being a really dark brown or just straight black...one finger of creamy off white head formed and receded to a thin, yet full cap...decent lacing was left

S - There is a roasty aspect to this beer that gives off a lot of chocolate and coffee aromas...there is a fair amount of hops in the nose as well

T - Again, lots of roast...chocolate is leading the flavor department over the coffee...I feel the coffee is there but it's taking a backseat to the chocolate...the middle is creamy and sweet and that pairs nicely with the dark roast...bitter chocolate and a hint of coffee finish the beer

M - Medium bodied...nicely carbonated, but it's missing something

O - For a porter, this was a nice touch...but as a coffee porter it falls a little short in that department...the coffee was there, but the chocolate really pushed through

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of coffee,some roasted malts. Taste is very strong on the coffee, some malts, a touch of hops is present. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall while not a bad beer, the strengh of the coffee was a bit to much for me, however coffee lovers will probably enjoy this beer.

A: The beer pours brown into my Founders Brewing Company goblet and builds up a nice light brown head. The retention and lacing are pretty good.

S: The smell is full of malts, chocolate, and fresh coffee. Coffee is right up front and is surprisingly strong.

T: The coffee comes first and is followed by a sweet chocolate and slight caramel maltiness. The roastiness is not overbearing, it's balanced nicely with the sweetness of the chocolate. The finish is insanely dry. I really enjoyed the taste.

MF/D: Medium body, carbonation is a bit low, dries the mouth out completely, making you continue to take sips. I thought the drinkability was pretty good for a porter.

O: I really enjoyed this. Balanced, tasty, full of coffee just like I hoped it would be.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

T - Pours a dark chocolate brown, a little flat but nearly completely opaque. About a finger and a half of tan head quickly builds and has a decent amount of retention.

S - The aroma is full of freshly pressed coffee, bold and roasty, but also smooth and not acrid. There is also a rich chocolate which is surprisingly potent. I am also discerning a bit of flaked oats as well, but I am not sure if it actually had any in it or not.

T - The flavors are initially a sharp kick of espresso and a slight amount of roast, but it quickly turns quite chocolaty and enjoyably sweet. The roast isn't overbearing and is actually fairly light, which helps it continue to be smooth and easily transition from coffee to chocolate to hops. The hops are earthy and nutty, lending the entire flavor profile to mesh comfortably with each other.

M - Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with good carbonation. A little bit thin at times, the mouthfeel suffers occasionally from a watery feel after the initial malts, but as this is a porter, I can't complain too much.

D/O - Drinkability is moderately high. This is one of the smoothest coffee beers I've come across while still maintaining a potent espresso boost. That, combined with the sweet, rich malts gives this a very flavorful initial taste that lingers well into the finish.
