Great beer and good value. I had the 6-beer sampler which is 6 five-ounce pours of pretty much any of the beers you want. Well, they kind of want you to have their four flagship beers in their, but you can definitely pick the remaining two. My favorite was the Aztec and the Cascadian Dark Ale.
The only food we tried was the deep-fried pickles. I was expecting sliced pickles, but they were pickle spears dusted in a seasoned cornmeal mixture. Came with ranch and chipotle dipping sauces. Not too greasy and perfect with beer.
Though it's way-the-hell-far-away from where we live, we definitely want to come back here again to have a proper meal and I want some more of their beer!

Way up north from where we were, in a residential neighborhood that’s changing (evident by Phil sitting across from me). ‘Are you sure we’re in the…’ and there it was on the corner. Careful not to park in front of that guy’s driveway. Friday afternoon, Portland play...
Corner place of a bricky orange facade, with a yellow inlay and wood trim. Penned out front, 5 long slat wood tables with benched accompaniment on, well, the things look Jengaish, with pieces absent here or there. Off to the side above bicycle parking, there’s piping to a raised barrel platform, piping drop run to another barrel; a total water reclamation show. All this running from the rooftop garden, and feeding the plantings above the awning of rain barrels.
2 paneled garage doors up to the inside space, seemingly triangular, and a front side entrance on the corner. Concrete floors, and 2-tone grayish walls & ceiling, or seemingly so. Wood barrels with vertical boards listing house regulars, seasonals, & guest taps. Slight bar counter space off the 2 upright pillars, and 5 stooled barrel tables across the floor. To the rear, a straight bar laminate topped over something concretelike, with a panel base, and iron pieced foot rails. Seating for about a dozen on hightop chairs, plus a shorty end of seating another 3 on lows. The barback unit is a stretch of alternating vertical 4 x 8 blackboards listing tap selections & swag, narrower mirror panels, and shorty wide boxed shelving for growlers & shirts. Drop copper cone lamps over the bar, and spots from the ceiling. TV’s in the corners showing the kick off of the Olympics. It’s involved. Framed mappings from an atlas in the hallway to the bathrooms off the bar, one of which is east coast hero New Jersey, and others about. Up a ½ flight of stairs to a perch where the kitchen lives, and a seating space with a dozen tables & booths, and a large party table on center. Good views over all that is below.
2 towers of 6 each along the bar, a dozen in all. 4 house regulars (Wit, 4.4%, coriander, a bit of chamomile; Dry Stout, 4.2%, roasty, chocolatey, dry, pleasant; Aztec, 9.4%, Strong Ale with cayenne, habarnero, & serrano, light heat, Win!; IPA, 6.9%, citrus, pine, and some good bitterness, a nice IPA), 3 seasonals (Yakima Valley Sour Ale, 3.2%, meh, okay, not so meh, just lightly sour; Old Woody, 9.2%, Old Ale, molasses, it’s real fuckin’ good for 9%+; Smoked Porter, 5.8%, decent body, light smokiness), and 5 regional guest taps; 4 beers (Double Mountain Kolsch, Terminal Gravity IPA, Everybody’s Local Logger, The Commons Urban Farmhouse Ale), and a cider (Two Towns Cider). Played the sampler game; comes with 4 regulars and you choice of 2 more, served on a 6-slat paddle. The Dry Stout, Aztec, IPA, & Old Woody were the best of ‘em.
And food. Jon ordered the nachos with pulled pork (they were really goddamn good), Phil, the Chipotle tomato soup, and I stupidly ventured unto the fire roasted jalapeno poppers stuffed with a blend of cheeses, chorizo, and whatever turns wayward children around. It was a bad pepper scene, almost as bad as the St Anselm Shishito incident of past pain. What I didn’t (read: couldn’t) eat of them were boxed to go so that Annie could sample and tell people she defeated them.
Jennifer Connelly served and was pleasant, lovely, funny, and all that. She likes the sour, but was liking, too, on the IPA. And a bar manager type guy came around, asking what we liked, too. Nice folks, although some guy then showed up and started fiddling tunes. I don’t know if it was sanctioned or what, but nobody batted an eye. Good neighborhood feel, and the drink was on.

Stopped by yesterday afternoon for a late lunch.
The brewpub is fairly good size and is triangular shaped, with some raised seating to your left as you walk in. They also have a sizeable outdoor patio area in the front (which was packed on this particular gorgeous day in July), and then there is a modest size bar area as you walk in from the front area. There is lots of exposed wood inside otherwise, and the restuarant has a very relaxed vibe to it.
In terms of beer, there were 8 house beer selections the day I was here, as well as 3 guest beers (and one cider). Quality was pretty good I thought, and I really liked the wit, IPA and the smoked porter here. The Woody and Aztec were both interesting, but just not to my taste. The IPA was really, really good; a standout I thought, even in IPA rich Portland.
In terms of service, it was pretty good. The young lady who was serving me was fairly new and didn't know a whole lot, but she indicated that the other bartender was more knowledgeable and could answer any questions I had (which was true; he was very knowledgeable).
Food was OK. I was here during happy hour and ordered the HH nachos and wings. The wings were OK (this is just not a good town for wings, IMHO), and the nachos were pretty good.
This is a nice enough place, but I guess I wasn't as enamored with it as others. However, one thing I need to comment on about this place...
One thing about Portland that really stands out (above any place else I can think of) is the knowledge of the service staff, pretty much every place you go. The young woman working here reminded me of countless other service staff I've encountered over the years... she was young, pleasant and friendly, but knew next to nothing about the beer here. However, it's apparent that's not acceptable to the manager or owner here, as he had her sampling the house beers behind the bar, and was encouraging her to voice her opinion about the beers. My guess is that in another week or two, it will no longer be accurate for me (or anyone else) to say that she doesn't know a lot about the beers here.

I liked this place a lot. Atmosphere was pretty laid back, dark and good quality. Definitely got a good vibe. A smaller bar seats maybe 10 people, but there are plenty of tables. Service was friendly and knowledgeable about their beers and the beer scene in general. There is a good selection of perpetually rotating beers on the list, with new ones being crafted all the time, and a constantly updated chalkboard filling you in on all the info. Many good and diverse choices. Food was decent and prices were reasonable. I'm sure I would visit this place often if I lived in the area.

Portland has a lot of options to recommend. This should always be one of them.
My wife and I made our way over here on 11/26/11 during happy hour. Vibe was low key, and our server was able to give us good, unobtrusive service. I didn't ask for help with the beer menu, but I did overhear both our server and her coworkers talking to fellow diners about the selection. Not experts, but they did a satisfactory job with their descriptions.
The building, as has been mentioned is comfortable, and it is split into two levels. I enjoy the fact that I can sit in the 'bar' area and watch some college football without being overwhelmed by the noise but not be deprived of the games entirely. It's at the perfect level where one can still hold a conversation, making for a good compromise between being at home and having a night out.
The house beer is always good and usually inventive. I started with a German Pilsener, and my wife chose the Saison/IPA hybrid. She followed her glass with the award winning Dry Stout. I would recommend all three. My second drink was an Imperial Pumpkin Stout which I would highly recommend. One of the best I've had. There are also a few guest taps for those who might be seeking something a little different. But all 3 times I've been to Breakside, I've watched at least one or more of Ben's beers get erased off the chalkboard while the guest taps stay up, and I think that says something about Breakside.
The food here is also great. The Jalapeno Poppers are a great starter. Crispy and cheesy with the slight jalapeno burn. Wife chose the Blackened Chicken Sandwich, and I chose the Pork Butt sandwich. Sweet, savory, and salty and delicious. I'd go so far as to say this is one of my top 3 Portland bars/pubs to eat at, with Victory and Hair of the Dog rounding out the other two.
Prices are a bit higher, around 10-15 dollars, but considering the quality of the meal, I don't complain. (Especially since happy hour knocked about 5 dollars off our bill, leaving us with a $36 pretip total for all of the above.)
Overall, it's well worth it to make your way to North Portland. I very much doubt you'll be disappointed.

Located in one of the better parts (though a bit worn at the edges) Breakside occupies a funky shaped building. The main floor features a 10 seat copper-top (?) bar, about 8 tables, with three large picnic tables outside on the sidewalk median with a pull down awning for sunny days. There's also an upstairs bar area though a bit smaller, and it looks like the kitchen etc are is downstairs. The day I visited they had about 10 house beers on tap and a couple of guest taps., including an IPA, Wit, non-barrel aged Aztec Stout (I was fortunate to grab a 750 ml of the bourbon barrel aged variety), their award winning oatmeal stout, a Northwest strong saison, and on this day I tried a Farmhouse Blonde. While I didn't have any food, my two neighbors sitting at the bar had the small nachos, and the serving size was enough for 3-4 people. The prices for food were a bit on the high side (the small nachos was $10) but the food selection from a perusal of the menu appeared to be upscale pub grub. The service was attentive while not being invasive. Certainly one of the more innovative tap lists in town, and they appear to have a smart business plan for future success, about what you'd expect when the Brewmaster attended Yale. While it's out of the way, given the frequent rotation of one-offs, I'm sure to be back here in the future. All in all, a cool little neighborhood pub, if I lived in the area, I'd be here quite a bit. Highly recommended for BAs looking for different approaches to PNW beers.

First impression was a good one. The space is gorgeous. It is a bit off the regular beaten path, up near Concordia in NE Portland. Though if you are hanging out around the Mississippi area (Amnesia brewing, Saraveza, etc...) then this isn't too far off.
The beers are all high quality and highly original. They do have a stout and an IPA as their regular staples, but also among the regular beer are a wit and an infused strong ale (Aztec - made with habanero and serrano chiles oh my!)
Was later in the evening, place was still hopping, patio was buzzing. Didn't notice if they had food since I had already eaten. The bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. Seemed to be a few regulars who were friendly as well. Also a bonus, they were playing US Open (tennis) highlights on one of the TVs. Just nice to know they aren't opposed to putting on sports other than football and baseball.
I enjoy that they rotate their beers regularly. Overall quality was very good. Prices seemed reasonable. Four beers came to around $18 though the aztec is only in 10oz glasses (but worth it).
I'll be back, and I'll update this review with any new information.

I absolutely loved this place and have to say it was one of my favorite spots in all of Portland that I visited this weekend. Situated in the North end of town - really close to the airport - in a mildly seedy gentrified neighborhood, Breakside Brewing has a beautiful corner location with a wide open walk in entrance and several outdoor tables with plenty of bike racks. Inside offers bar seating for roughly 8 people and a bunch of tables where people were embracing the wifi amenity. Tom was our server and was really nice. He answered all of our questions about the products, other spots in town, and the brewing processes used to produce each beer to the best of his ability. Ben the brewer introduced himself and was gracious enough to offer us a nice tour of the brewery in the basement. He was extremely transparent about his brewing practices and we exchanged a bunch of ideas.
Selection was good with roughly a dozen offerings. Ben's beers are very inventive and original to say the least. While not all of the beers were quite "world class home runs" all were above average in quality. More importantly, I will say that just about every one of them was interesting and definitely "pushed the envelope" much further than the other breweries in town.
The food menu was very similar in the sense that it was inventive and interesting despite not being super tasty. Again, way above average but no world class home runs. I enjoyed the house made mac n cheese "carnivore style" with andioulle sausage quite a bit. Very hearty with a generous portion. I did want a little more flavor out of the cheese and some heat out of the sausage though.
A must visit.

I visit this neighborhood brewery fairly frequently. The food is always solid, the staff is generally friendly and attentive. The beer though is the star, their beers are delicious, the IPA is pretty solid but their unique and one off beers are what shines brightest. I highly recommend going and trying the Roggenbier and Aztec.
The atmosphere is more restaurant than pub, it gets pretty packed most nights and I have had to wait for a table but usually not more than 5 - 10 minutes. In the summer their picnic tables outside are nice and they roll up the garage doors.
With the many places in Portland to visit it's hard to make time for new places but this new brewery should definitely be a destination and I would recommend visiting for a meal too.

Just went to this place today, I had heard about it and had been meaning to check it out for quite some time. Atmosphere is great, it was real nice outside when i went so they had the doors up with people sitting outside eating and drinking. I sat at the bar and service was great. Had a sampler tray where you get to pick 6 beers. The beers brewed here are for sure different, they like to experiment a bit which is cool. I had the gruit/spruce wheat/IPA/hoppy amber, aztec and saison. All were great but I liked the aztec and spruce wheat the best. I am not much for wheat beers but the spruce added a nice touch. I also had a small sample of their Sazerac beer brewed with star anise...it was ok for a sample...dont think i would like a full pint of the stuff however. The menu was pretty good, I had the fried pickles which i will get those no matter what place has them and a small nacho...both were good. I will go back here again, good place to go to get something you wont find any other place as I said before they like to experiment at Breakside so you are likely to find something different thats for sure.
