"You Can't Beat A Dead Horse"

I was hoping for more out of this beer, I had never heard of it and bought it because of the slogan which made me chuckle. The beer is fairly carbonated, tastes of toasty malts and hops. I was disappointed with the overall flavor, which was bland with a bitter aftertaste. Very dry. Not my style, I look for more flavor out of my ambers.

Apparently you can beat a dead horse.

Once more, a tip o' the wood to my local, in-person trader, tone77, who recently dropped off a load of CANs (among others) in furtherance of The CANQuest! I made a change request as the words "Dead" and "Horse" should be separate(d), plus the CAN (seemingly) identifies it as "Dead Horse Premium Amber Ale" and as a SuppO once told me, "No one is going to get in trouble for providing too much information. It is when you provide too little that fog and confusion sets in." We'll see.

From the CAN: "You C[AN]'t Beat a Dead Horse"; "Amber Ale"; "Say m[oh]-ab, you pilgrims!"; "Rejoice"; "10 Million Years In The Making"; "Dead Horse Ale is named after the scenic overlook near Arches National Park. A traditional English-style mild ale with a well balanced malt to hop ratio."

The Crack unleashed a brimful CAN and an inverted Glug produced two fingers of dense, tawny head with great retention. Color was a deep-amber with NE-quality clarity and loads of CO2 bubbles in evidence. Nose had a nutty, caramel malty scent. Mouthfeel was medium and the nuttiness of the malt was immediate on the tongue along with a light grassy hoppiness. I CANnot say that I CANsider myself an expert on the style, but in looking at the site's description, I would say that this is an excellent example. The finish had a light butteriness which is apparently okay in the style. At only 4.0% ABV, it could easily be a session beer, but I always feel like I need more hops. Say Moh-are, you hopheads!

Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is kind of mild, some malts, a bit nutty. Taste is smooth, very easy drinking. Some hops up front, followed by the malts and a bit of nuttiness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a refreshing, easy drinking beer.

16oz can, 12/23/12
DFH IPA glass

A: slightly hazy burnt orange color. Slightly off white fluffy head. Frothy. Sticks around.

S: Getting lots of nuttiness on the nose. Not a lot of hops. Mostly grainy and sweet malts.

T: Light hop bite up front. Then it's all sweet grainy malts on this one. Really light and easy drinking. Finish is clean and fairly crisp.

M: Light to medium bodied.

A dead horse is an appropriate symbol for this beer. It needs CPR desperately. It is light on all respects. Light in color, lacing, mouthfeel, taste, and general satisfaction. The brewmasters need to serve an apprenticeship at a northwest brewery. It's OK on a hot day when there is nothing but Bud, Miller, and Hamm's as alternatives - but that's not saying much. Joseph Smith...you need googles other than those made of stone.

This is from my notes. in 2008. Poured into a pint glass at 37 degrees.
Appearance: A thin head that is ivory in color. The color of the beer is a medium amber color with orange highlights.

Nose: A hints of citrus, malt with a slight sweet aroma.

Taste A good malt flavor and the hops is very hard to distinguish what the flavor profile is.

The mouth feel sweet malty texture. with some creaminess.

Overall: The body of the beer is thin & watery he finish is mild. I feel that the beer lacks a lot of character and life. I will revisit this beer.

A: It poured a hazy light amber with a thin on half finger head that receded fast to a slight ring around the collar. There was spotty lacing.

S: It had the smell of lightly roasted grains, sweet light white fruit (pears and apricots) and hints of mild spciy hops.

T: It began with sweet lightly toasted malts, bready white yeast, hints of fruit and occasional touches of white spices.

M: It was light bodied with a thin texture, light carbonation and very light ABV. Clean wet finish

D: Mild flavors, smooth texture, balanced body and clean finsih make this a nice and easy session brew.

Moab Dead Horse Amber Ale
12oz. brown bottle

A: poured into a snifter. nice amber color, more orange than red. nice off-white head, with decent retention. light lacing.

S: not quite the aroma I was looking forward to. smells of sauerkraut and metal.

T: some of that cabbage is in the flavor as well, which is a huge turnoff to me. nothing really stands out to me with this one. big lack in flavor.

M: too carbonated, major lack in body.

D: not up to par with the rest of the beers in this style. I couldn't finish it.

I got this bottle in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John!

First off, the label says Moab Brewery Belgrade Mt so I'm slightly confused here(contract brewed?) but:

It pours from 12oz bottle a cloudy gold with a 2 finger+ head of foam. Better than average head retention.

The smell has some earthiness, hops, and some fruit.

The taste has an initial malt roastiness to it followed by some citrus hops and then it all seems to fade away. Quickly. Hmm...the finish is *very* watery as is the mouthfeel and I'd have to say that this isn't a very good stab at the style at all. The label says it's in the tradition of an English style Mild but if that's the case..um....nah, I'd give another example of the style a chance. No problem.

Bottom line: A very average brew at best and 1 I'd not consider to drink again.

Poured to a clean pint glass...

Pours straw colored, almost orange in the darker light of the dinning room here. Smells of caramel malts and very slight grassy hops. Some sweet caramel malt up front followed by a nice earthy hopping that finished clean, at first. There's a slight tinge to the aftertaste that I can't quite pick out (no freshness date on the bottle). Feels watery on the tongue, actually a bit watery across the board...nothing really stands out all that much. Completely drinkable on a nice summer day but I've got gotos in the fridge that'll be pulled first.

Bottle is inkjetted "7908" on the bottom, maybe the BB date?

Puffy, convex head of foam on a lovely deep amber-orange body. A ring of lace with descending sheets of foam are left along teh edge.

Aroma of creamy peanut butter, which follows in the flavor. Quite a big specialty malt presence. Lightly bitter, although sweet malt steals the show. A little grainy, but smooth and round instead of having a rough hewn feeling. Maybe a little oatmeal, or malt-o-meal for the 80s generation.

Very light and easy drinking, in the English Mild tradition (style as stated on the label). Several wouldn't be out of the question in warmer weather.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a pint glass, the liquid is semi cloudy gold and overly carbonated. The Head is a way big 5 fingers, white and leave tons of lace in its wake.

The smell is floral hopy and light malt.

The taste follows, nothing great a typical amber ale, slightly sweet, mildly roasty.

The mouthfeel is ok, lighter body and lots of carbonation.

The drinkability is ok not a beer to go after and seek out but better then BMC.

Poured a dark straw hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light clean grain with a smattering of musty hops.

The taste was very well balanced and consisted of a light grainy malt and a suble, yet spirited grassy hop. An overall fresh taste.

The mouthfeel was light with good carbonation.

Overall a clean and crisp ale that gains points for its good drinkability. Thanks to Wasatch.

Thanks to Wasatch for this bottle.

Poured a thin brownish gold in color with a dense white foam that never quite vanished. Nose is "wet"--strong water tones and not much else. But maybe a bit of malts if a really look.

Very weak flavor. More like carbonated water with some off flavors than a beer to me. Malt flavors are thin and more noticeable in the aftertaste than with each sip. Just some ever so slight hop presence, but again I find it more in the aftertaste. I would forget I was drinking a beer if it were not for the aftertaste. Medium to light mouthfeel that leans toward watery. Probably a nice quaffable beer on a hot summer day after yard work but not something to savor in the evening.

Pours slightly hazed light amber with a very thin hed that immediately becomes spots and disappears.

The smell is of slightly roasted grain with a touch of earthiness and vague fruitiness. Very mild.

The taste is of slightly roasted grain. Earthy, slightly fruitiness bitterness gives it a nice balance. Taste is fine, though nothing full, but restrained and too watered down. Clean finish.

The feel is watery thin, though some flavor manages to hang on for a bit.

Mild is an understatement. Easy enough, with just enough flavor, to drink one, but too watery and overly mild, even for a mild ale, to keep interest or want another.

Thanks to jcwattsrugger for bringing this back from Utah.
