A: mango colour, ok head and good lacing.

S: juicy fruit, mangoes, guava with lots of malt coming through. Malt brings a refreshing sweetness to the smell.

T: and M: Bitter and thin in the mouth. Lots of leafy fruity flavour.

O: Good beer. The Kiwis can definitely rival Americans with their IPAs (single rather than double in this case, imo).

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a bright, crystal clear, copper coloring with a thin, filmy, bright white head that starts around a half an inch and settles into a thin, clingy layer. Aromas of light, sweet caramel subtly posting the backbone, supporting a ton of tropical fruit characteristics like papaya, mango, pineapple, and berries. There are some green, vegetative characteristics in the nose, too...not piney, but almost herbal and floral. Flavors are fruity initially, with a quick follow-up from a slight bitterness and roasted characteristic. The tropical fruit platter on the forward tongue remains light but stable, and the bitterness is mild, with a tangy caramel highlight that balances the palate. The body is full, and the carbonation level keeps that body light and slightly effervescent. Aftertaste is a rich sweet and fruity sweet blending, with a hint of resiny hops presence. Smooth, light finish with a fruit punch twist, keeping the tropical theme throughout. The New Zealand hops really give a unique and interesting twist on the American DIPA style. Surprisingly drinkable for the flavor profiles and the slightly increased ABV. Solid brew.

Production date of December 11, 2012.

Beer is golden amber with a moderate white head. Head fades steadily but not totally.

Nose contains some caramel malt, along with some fruity hop scents. Pineapple, mango and tangerine. Some pine. More malt than most IPAs, perhaps because of the fact that this beer is just over 4 months old, but it is still a nice smell. Fruit scents are a little different and quite pleasant.

Taste is also quite fruity. Again, pineapple and mango and tangerine, with a lime flavour as well. Quite tropical. Very unusual taste. A bit soapy. A good dose of caramel malt as well, with a bit of a toasty flavour. Bitter, but not strongly. I quite like this beer, the New Zealand hops are very nice. Would love to try it fresher.

Medium bodied, highly carbonated. A bit on the bready side.

Overall, good. Quite enjoyable. Tasty stuff.

Pours a clear orange color with many streams of huge carbonation bubbles. The frothy ivory head lasts a short while. but coats the glass in lace patches. Sweet, bready pale malts mix with light tropical fruit notes in the nose. Soap, white grape, orange and lemon hop flavors fill the palate. In toe, the doughy malt profile keeps things balanced. Hop bitterness builds with warmth, but contends with a light fusel alcohol flavor. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with less carbonation than the appearance would let on. Tropical fruit hops and a moderate bitterness last a while in the finish - as does that boozyness.

Its great to have some more NZ hopped IPAs in Ontario, even if a tad pricey (6.25 for 500ml). This one could have a more nuanced alcohol presence and more intense, lively hop flavors, but its still a decent IPA. Worth a try.

Appearance: clear copper; big, egg-white head with strong retention and lacing

Aroma: bright citrus - orange grapefruit, lime - hinting at sweet and bitter; some spruce elements as well but generally it's on the fruity side

Taste & Mouthfeel: lightly oily, creamy texture; starts with a mild, simple, sweet malt flavour, but then the hops rush in with biting resin bitterness just barely caressed with lingering caramel malt; the citrus elements of the nose aren't present, this is all spruce tips; after time, things start to balance out and tropical, floral fruits gain the strength to balance out the hops very well -

Overall: it really becomes something interesting about halfway through, could make for a good sessionable beer with fresh, vibrant attributes throughout
