Sampled 5/28/2011 at the brewery.
Pours dark red with some brown showing through, off-white head, a bit of lacing and decent retention.
Aroma is mostly roast, a bit burnt, and some chocolate covering the malty base.
Flavor is too roasty and astringent but there is some caramel in the background to let you know that it's still an amber. There is also a hefty dose of chocolate malt. Not bad.
Body is light/medium and drinkable.

This is a favorite of both mine and my girlfriend. I'm a hop head so its great when we can both agree on a beer. We pick this up often in growler form from Mother Earth's excellent tasting room.
A - Pours black, but upon closer inspection very deep amber.
S - Chocolate is pretty clear and sweet. Notes of fruit.
T - Yummy. Roasty and sweet all in one. Again the chocolate is pretty clear.
M - Its light and very drinkable, but has complexity. An interesting beer to enjoy all evening.

On tap at Mother Earth Brew Co. in Vista, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson brown with a khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark malt and some slight cocoa aromas. Taste is of dark roasty malt and some cocoa powder. There is a mild roasty bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some nice cocoa aromas and flavors.
