My bar hunting project takes me an area filled with car dealerships. Getting lost in the crowd of dealerships are a few buildings, in which one houses 1300 Bar. Just park on the street and walk on in.
The interior is a mix of a sharp, new looking rectangular bar, flat screen TV's, and pool table, but with a run down floor with cracks, and assorted junk piled in one corner. It seems to have that neighborhood bar feel, with maybe ten other clients inside drinking macros while watching NBA highlights.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the tap handles at the bar. About a dozen on-tap, plus 40-some in the bottle. The draft menu was a little different from what actually was on-tap, hinting there's draft rotation here. Highlights from draft include Three Philosophers, Telegragh Reserve Wheat, Coronado Blonde Ale, Delirum, Erdinger, and Stone IPA. The bottle list wasn't bad at all either; Stone, DogFish Head, Fuller's, Duvel, Chimay, Unibroue, Tripel Karmeliet, and Hair of the Dog are among those.
Another pleasant surprise were several different pieces of glassware. I love glassware, so points to 1300 Bar for that. My beers were in good condition as well; Round 1, Telegraph Reserve Wheat; Round 2, Duvel; Round 3, Blanche de Chambly. I even bought a Young's Double Chocolate Stout for a pair I was talking with? Why? Well, the prices are great. Nothing on draft was more than $6, and most bottles only cost $4, including the Duvel and Blanche de Chambly I drank!
The bartender was friendly, and she could speak in a little Beerinese. Then, from out of nowhere, patrons were offered complementary carne asada tacos from the bar. Appearantly, if you drink a beer, you get two free tacos. They were decent, nothing fancy. Speaking of food, I didn't see a food menu anywhere, but they do give you peanuts with your beer.
1300 Bar isn't another Verdugo or Blue Palms, but it is an inexpensive bar with craft beer. Being not far from Verdugo, this would be a solid alternative to go to.
