American Double / Imperial IPA |  8.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. growler (33), on-tap (12), bottle (1)

Notes:
The series of experimental Double IPAs continues. This one is hopped with ample amounts of Columbus and is reminiscent of… an Imperial Harlan?

Very fresh growler sent by my friend in VT.

Quite hazy looking and I am positive that it's the hops. This is a double IPA but it drinks like a pale ale. The hop profile is right up my alley too: grass, pine, weed and ginger. No sweetness and none of the tropical fruit bullshit. I am f'in loving it.

No balance so to speak, just a very dry and fresh tasting IPA. The ginger note is a new one for me but it works very well. Reminds me of Heady Topper and wows me in the same manner Heady did.

750ml swing top opened on 6.16.13

A - Pours a very hazy, cloudy light orange with a huge soapy light tan head with good retention.

S - Citrusy, tropical, and some melon.

T - Tropical fruit, floral, melon, orange, a touch of wheat.

D - Smooth light body with good carbonation.

O - #3, and another good one. It didn't blow me away, but HF may be spoiling me with all these amazing beers.

Growler courtesy of Luke. Thank you very much for the opportunity!

Yellow-orange pour into my Tired Hands teku with a big white bubbly dome. HF hops just look good in a glass.

Herbal minty citrus jumps from the growler. There's also a white cake batter underneath.

Juicy orange on the front of the tongue for the briefest of moments. Immediate segue into dry baby aspirin and big catty dankness. Remember when you'd blow bong hits through a toilet paper roll stuffed with fabric softener? Hey the potheads are doing laundry again. Well, this is like exhaling a gnarly sticky nug straight through Mr. Whiskers crap den. Prickly bitterness along the finish with an herbal feline fade.

Next time you decide to fire one up, call your kitty in on the session. My guess is you'll have a lot to talk about.

750ml bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead wine glass.

The beer pours a hazy orange color, with a nice finger and a half of soapy white head that has very nice retention and leaves behind a massive network of sticky lace. The aroma is fairly tame, lots of bitter pine, light citrus, mostly grapefruit with some light tangerine, a touch of floral character with some rich, sweet malt backbone. The flavors are more impressive, lots of bitter, resinous pine on the tongue, spicy hop character, tangy grapefruit, tangerine with just a touch of pale malt that has some straw-esque after taste that lingers. The body is nice and juicy, coats the mouth well, a bit of a soapy texture that has a great dry kick at the finish.

Verdict: Another delicious IPA from Hill Farmstead. While not quite up to snuff with their best efforts, this beer still hits the spot for any hop head. One of the best showings of the Columbus hop I've had to date.

750ml growler poured into a Three Floyds Teku.

A~ glowing light orange, with a nice fluffy white head and a lot of lacing.

S~ tons of citrus and pine. mostly lemons and grapefruit, not too much going on here.

T~ pretty follows the nose, very well balanced but nothing more then the citrus, pine and hop bitterness.

M~ thick, but smooth. feels imperial haha! nice carbonation of course and a tad dry.

O~ not a bad DIPA but definitely not my favorite, i tend to like a lot more complexity. still very drinkable and slightly messing me up on this fine summer day!
