Poured from tap into pint at Papago in scottsdale. Pours a black as night color with some slight off white head. Smell is fantastic. Lots of pure coffee, with some slight roasted malts and a nice dose of coconut. Really fantastic aroma.
Amazing pure coffee flavor, some roasted malts, milk sweetness and finished huge with lots of coconut...really tremendous on the coconut but works really well.
Its about as smooth as can be, easy drinker, and just leaves you wanting more. This is a great brew...

A - poured with one finger of light brown head on a black body. The foam collapses at a moderate pace but fails to leave significant lace.

S - lots of coconut with a vanilla and almost white chocolate character.

T - sweet malt with lots of coconut up front. Vanilla and micha notes in the middle with a more roasty character in the finish and a bit of smoky caramel that lingers on the palate.

M - a moderately thick, slightly oily body, moderate carbonation, and a somewhat sweet finish.

D - surprisingly good, the coconut is stronger than I would like, but it works well with the base beer and brings out some interesting flavors that almost seem oak like.

On tap at the pub, 2/1/12.

A-pour is a dark cedars brown with a thin ring of off white head and a little bit of lacing.

S-smells like a coconut with a nice mild roast behind and an almost lactic sweetness. On the whole this reminds me of a donut and I love donuts.

T-as u would expect or at least hope. Coconut with a nice base beer behInd it. Sweetness is nice but not overdone. Good coconut notes.

M-medium bodied, good carbonation

O-really nice beer. Glad I stopped in.

Growler straight from Papago poured into a pint glass the same night.

The head is a little less than a finger high and tan in color. Fades a bit but manages to stick around for a decent time. Lacing is moderate. The beer's color is black.

The aroma is of huge and wonderfully bright coffee (probably the most coffee I've ever smelled in a beer), loads of coconut, amaretto coffee creamer, lighter roasted malts, and light and sweet milk chocolate. The more I sniff this, the more I think it smells really freaking great!

The taste does not disappoint. Big bitter coffee notes, like straight black coffee mixed with wonderful notes of sweet coconut and hints the amaretto creamer from the nose, as well as roasted malts, and milk chocolate. Let's just say I'm almost done with my first glass before I even get to the mouthfeel section...time for another pint!

The mouthfeel is nice and drinkable to say the least. Consistency is light-smooth, carbonation is light-medium, body is light-medium, and the finish is very smooth with a lingering bitterness. For a milk/sweet stout, it's pretty nice but could use a little heft.

Overall I think this is definitely one coffee stout that all should try, and I don't just say that because I'm a homer. I hate the term homerism and I feel that I maintain a pretty objective point of view when rating beers from AZ. Even so, Coconut Joe is just one of those darn good beers that I'd recommend to stout and coffee lovers alike. A great take on a coffee stout, IMO!

A - Poured a dark, dark, oily brown, almost black. One finger dark tan head that gradually dissipated into a thin film and then solid ring. Not much lacing.

S - Mocha chocolate milk! Strong cocoa and coffee aroma with a hint of coconut. Very nice!

T - Taste follows the nose, with overtones of chocolate and coffee dominating. Did not get the strong coconut flavors of previous reviews. Enjoyed the blend of flavors followed by light, lingering bitterness.

M- Light to medium body and light carbonation.Somewhat thin if you anticipate the mouthfeel following the richness of the aroma, but I think it lends itself to the high drinkability of this beer. This goes down very, very easy and is not filling for a stout.

O - I enjoyed this brew a lot. I thought the coconut would dominate but found the coffee/chocolate flavors and aromas dominant, which is not a bad thing! This is one stout to enjoy if you get the chance.

Poured from a growler, brought home to Vegas for Thanksgiving.

Looks: sable. Just toeing the line between dark brown and black, the beer's completely opaque yet doesn't appear too thick. A fizzy half-finger head the color of cinnamon quickly fades into nothingness, leaving a microscopic ring of bubbles and zero lacing.

Smells: like an almond joy. Sweet coconut, dark chocolate, a bit of mild coffee. Very nice.

Tastes: like fresh coconut. The sweet coconut that comes in, say, an Almond Joy is sweet and roasted; this isn't that kind of coconut. The flavor here is more akin to the meat of a real coconut, freshly cracked open and scooped out with a spoon. There's also some earthy hops mixed with lightly bitter coffee beans. It seems both full-flavored and light, which may be a result of the clean finish. As it warms, roasty coffee and tangy chocolate rise in power while the coconut falls off slightly.

Feels: smooth, but just a bit light in body. Moderate, tingly carbonation tickles the tongue, while the crisp finish again makes the beer feel lighter than you'd expect.

Drinks: easily. Though I'd like the beer to have a little more oomph, the flavors aren't overbearing, the feel is nice, and the beer goes down quickly.

Thanks to FooFaa for procuring this growler in Arizon and sharing it with brewslut and myself.

A - Poured an oily black liquid with a slim but creamy burnt tan head that diminished to a few dots of retention and some stringy lace.

S - The aroma of this beer is utterly amazing and just oozes coconut awesomeness. Blending coconut, coffee, chocolate candy, toasted malt and milky sweet malt, the nose of this beer just reels me in.

T - Sweet coconut and chocolate candy with a hint of coffee and earthy hop bitterness, the latter of which is really pronounced in the backend. Flavor is indeed sweet, but balanced wth bitter notes and plenty of toasty malt in the finish.

M - Medium bodied, although a bit thin and watery overall. Fair amount of bitterness with plenty of residual sweetness on the palate.

D - Fantastic coconut-infused brew with an exquisite balance of sweetness, coffee bitterness and chocolate. Great stuff... need more!

This arrives in a pint glass with a minimal wisp of a head. The beer is quite dark, almost black, with rich, concentrated brown notes. The beer smells of coconut, vanilla and an toasted nuttiness; it really reminds me again that I love when this exact note is extracted from a Bourbon barrel. There is really not a whole lot else going on with the nose; big, expressive, coconut is all I am really able to smell. This works if you like coconut in your beer, and luckily I do.

The beer tastes dominantly of coconut again; smooth with vanilla overtones as well as that toasted coconut meat note. The beer starts out quite dry, and really quite cold too (I wish the beer was cooled to a more reasonable temperature here, it doesn't help that I forgot to ask for a non-frozen glass). As the beer warms up though, it starts to pick up a touch of sweetness that makes the coconut note a bit more full and expressive. The finish has a touch or roasted malt character to it as well as a solid toasted graininess. The beer is light enough to be quite quaffable, but, especially as it warms, it has a fullness to the palate that helps accentuate the coconut flavors.

This is one of those beers that works quite well if you like coconut, as this is clearly dominated by the coconut flavors & aromas (it is all one really notices in the nose). There is just enough porter character in the flavor to keep things interesting. Perhaps a bit simplistic, but I am finding this quite tasty.

The third of three contracted out stouts and porters by Papago, enjoyed on tap at the Papago bar. A story in coconut. Black with off-brown head. No lace noticed. Tasted industrial, added coconut. Smelled nice though. Average at best mouthfeel. Some lactose.

Enjoyed this beer courtesy of barleywinefiend at the Central Coast BA Gathering at the Pour House in Paso Robles, CA. Thanks Josh! Following review written from notes.

Poured into an 8oz. Rémy Martin snifter.

Appearance: Very dark brown in the center; closer to caramel around the edges. Hardly any head or lacing, though that could be due to the growler sitting out for a bit.

Smell: Mocha and coconut fuse together perfectly! Great combination of roasty and sweet.

Taste: Starts with very roasty espresso and finishes with silky smooth coconut. These two flavors are great complements of each other. Not a whole lot else going on, but does there really need to be? Very tasty.

Mouthfeel: Sadly, this was pretty flat and watery by the time I got to it. As mentioned above, I'm not sure how long it had been open before I got to taste it, but it couldn't have been more than an hour. Body was also pretty thin. Very bland on the palate.

Drinkability: I love the flavor combo here, but there are a number of improvements that could be made. I'd love to try this straight from the tap as my biggest problem with this beer was the carbonation.

Wow!Perhaps one of the best tasting stouts I have ever had.

Poured a deep brown with good carbonation and tannish head. Nose is big coconut and coffee, hints of roated malts and cocoa. Taste is unbelievably smooth and balanced. Coconut and coffee blend well. Mouthfeel is creamy, coconut and cocoa, roasted malt, medium bodied but not husky enough for a stout, more of a porter. Drinkability, over and over again! Bravo.

Had this at Papago Brewing. Poured into an English pint glass from tap.

5.0 A: Quite a looker. Typical stout, super black color. Two fingers of the creamiest head I've ever seen, which is tan/cream in color and had great retention and tons of lacing.

4.5 S: Chock full of coffee. This was the most coffee I've ever gotten from a beer. At first I didn't pick up on the coconut because it blends in so well, but after a few more snifts I did notice it and it gets stronger as the beer warms.

4.5 T: Absolutely delicious. It tastes just like a carbonated bitter cup of black Joe. Really, it does. The coconut isn't as strong in the taste. In fact, most of it is lost.

3.0 M: Light-medium body. This could be much creamier. This is the only bad aspect of the brew. The mouthfeel just flat out sucks.

3.5 D: Picture perfect looks, awesome smell, and very tasty, but the drinkability suffers a hell of a lot from the mouthfeel.
