Originally reviewed on 12/27/12, had it one other time since then. Brewed with local bacon, coffee and maple syrup with flaked oaks and cocoa nibs also added. I'm a little weary of this brewery but I had to try this one.

This pours into my Hunahpu's snifter black with a small beige head. A patchy cap and ring remains with spots of lace left.

Sweet chocolate, coffee, some bacon grease in the scent, decent strength.

Taste is even between chocolate and coffee with small hints of maple and bacon - there's more of a roasty coffee feel than any kind of smokiness though. Doesn't quite pull off an oatmeal vibe either but it's quite tasty anyways. A good mix of sweet and roasty.

It seems to a be a bit high on the carbonation but otherwise a decent mouthfeel. Feels light and easy drinking for the ABV, has a good fluffiness from the oats.

With this kind of beer it can be hard to go wrong , although the balance is iffy but that was expected considering the ingredients. Nevertheless, enjoyable, and a step up from their Maple Oatmeal Stout.

22oz bomber poured into an oversized snifter.

A: Black on the pour. A half-inch cap of creamy tan head retains fairly well, but eventually dies. It can be resuscitated with a strong swirl of the glass. Lacing is small, wispy, and patchy.

S: Nice roasted coffee aroma, underlying smokiness, molasses and a very mild maple syrup impression. A very slight hint of solventy alcohol does creep out, but it's subtle enough that it's easily overlooked. Plum and grape darkfruit. Hint of woodiness. Chocolate is very downplayed. Opens as it warms.

T: Cola and molasses at the outset. Milk and bittersweet dark chocolate tastes build in intensity. Syrupy maple. Slightly woody. Smoke comes to the forefront for a time, then slips into the background. That touch of solventy alcohol detected on the nose is nowhere to be found, which is a very good thing. Darkfruit is only barely perceptible. A touch nutty. Stays sweet- perhaps too sweet. Finishes with a lingering syrup and molasses impression.

M: Medium-thick body. Very syrupy with a dextriny feel. Creamy and somewhat silky. Low carbonation. Not as grounded as it could be.

O: Eh, it's ok. An ambitious brew to be sure. It feels a little half-baked though, and it just lacks depth and substance. Tastes like a decent batch of your friend's latest wild homebrew project.

Reviewed from notes.

A- Black pour into a pint glass with a light tan-brown head. Foamy texture to the cap and about one finger in size. Decent head retention and just a few patches of lace here and there.

S- Nose is dark and roasty with a definite smoky bacon and fruity yeast aspect. Coffee and cocoa here but not overly strong in general.

T- Again, a pretty strong dark fruit aspect probably from the higher ABV American Ale yeast. Bacon smoke comes out nicely as well as some cocoa, coffee and dark roast malts. Just a tiny hint of maple.

MF- Creamy and moderately thick body. Medium level of carbonation. Some roast bitters in the finish.

Solid stout overall but lacking some of the depth and rich feel that great stouts have.
