Poured into a La Trappe chalice on 11/12/12

Slightly browned amber color; deep honey hues as well. Rather clear. Billowy one finger head lasts quite a long time, deflating slowly. Great retention. Lace is moderate in area, but thick and raised.

The aroma has lots of banana and a fair amount of clove and spice. Un-peeled pear, grapes earthy light fruits, grass and a hint of soap. Very floral, too. Perhaps a faint notion of fresh tea leaves. The back is sweetened by pastry-like malts notes. Really nice as it opens up.

The flavor has juicy, over-ripe fruit in no short supply on the front end (pear and apple, especially). The middle is full of robust malt notes: cracker and biscuit. Pepper and spice rain down on the lot, making for a zesty later half. Alcohol is appreciable, meandering throughout.

The feel is a granular and slick medium-plus body with a perfectly fluffy amount of carbonation. Alcohol is more noticeable with warmth. The finish has lots of dry spice.

Overall: Interesting things going on here. This strikes me as its own sort of creature, and it's a creature I like well enough. Approachable and enjoyable.

Pours a hazy orange. Respectable head with moderate lacing.

On the nose, I get apricots and yeast. Nice.

There is a certain dry character in the taste. Subtle fruitiness with hints of apricot and clove.

Mouthfeel has a well balanced carbonation. A moderate finish - emphasized by the dry character.

Poured from 330 ml bottle into Chalice glass (Affligem)

A: brown/orange copper color with a foam very persistent and almost white
S: spicy, fruit and a bit of alcohol. Not strong smell.
T: obvious presence of alcohol and brown sugar but good balance with malt ,and in my opinion short of bitter
M: medium carbonation, and medium to full bodied, Nice in mouth.
O: good belgian strong ale that you must drink slowly. Surely not my first choice but enjoyable beer.

A: Amazingly sexy beer. Poured a deep honey orangish color with wonderful carbonation leaving a load of white bubbles, foam and lacing that never died. This is head retention!

S: Notes of light honey, light orchard style fruits(apples, pears), some spice and a little hay plus the booze stings the nostrils

T: Immediate booze presence with green apples, pears and some light citrus and grains. There seems to be a little dab of honey and grains in their. Their is a definite sweetness and booze presence on this one as it persists start to finish. Speaking of finish..sweet, booze, and fruits sit on the palate

M: Medium to big bodied, well carbonated, lots of residual sweetness and booze keep you happy, but not overly done

O: Very good and enjoyable

A- 11.2 oz bottle with a 2014 freshness date poured into a tulip. Slightly hazy dark gold color gave me a one inch off white meringue like head that seems destined to last indefinitely. Excellent lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Fresh fruit, apples and pears. Some yeast and grassy hops.

T- Not much malt in the nose but it shows up here. The alcohol really dominates and is a bit warm at the finish, also dry. Not a very complex flavor profile but there is subtle interplay between sweet and dry that keeps my interest. There's a little yeasty funk at work here too.

M- Great carbonation, medium body but very smooth even with the high carbonation level.

O- A very enjoyable Tripel, great for savoring with a formidable alcohol kick.

Best before 8/2014.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, honey, yeast, slight spices, and a really strong fruity aroma. Taste is much the same with a nice honey covered fruit flavor on the finish. There is a mild spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel Overall, this is a good beer that is really tasty but quite strong.

Bottle is dated "Best before 12/08/13". So I'm guessing this is around a year and a half old.

A: Pours a nice slightly hazy amber with a big fluffy off-white head (not quite tan). Fades very very slowly, leaving frothy lacework everywhere.

S: Some lemon with some heavy and rich banana. A touch of yeasty, toasted bread (if that makes sense).

T: Hmph. A strong, strange stale toast flavor up front. Some funky overripe banana. Cloves in the middle. Very, very earthy. Some black pepper in the finish.

M: Fairly heavy and thick. Carbonation a little on the high side and that helps cut it. Kind of astringent.

O: Very strange tripel for sure. Has a sort of musty, stale flavor to it. Kinda funky like it's somewhat sour but it's really hard to tell. Very yeasty and earthy for sure.

Poured into a Tulip Glass

Appearance - Hazy Orange with a 1 finger head that leaves behind some good lacing

Smell - Cloves, Bubblegum, Caramel, Banana Bread, Yeasts, and Malts. There's also a slight boozy scent here

Taste - Bubblegum, Hefe-Cloves, Caramel, Malts, Yeasts, and Cracked Peppers. Definitely a interesting and rich mixture of flavors and it works out very well for the most part, save for a slight boozy flavor

Mouthfeel - This is a very thick bodied beer, and has a stronger-than-normal carbonation kick, which actually helps add a dimension of flavor

Overall - I enjoyed this quite well. It's a little over-priced considering what I paid for it but at least it offers a rich and robust flavor which any Tripel fan can enjoy.

Maredsous 10 Tripel has a thick, pillowy, off-white head, with a slight orange tinge to it, an initially clear, golden-orange appearance (a big slab of yeast slime is below the cap after swishing the bottle), with streams of tiny bubbles and a tremendous amount of thick lacing left about, which I had to lick off of the sides of the glass. The aroma is of spicy, yeasty, citrusy, sweet malt and the taste is of citrusy, sweet, bready, rich, alcohilic barley malt, spicy yeast, and almost no hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is light to medium, and Maredsous 10 Tripel finishes smooth, mostly dry, and very easy drinking. Overall, this is excellent.

Served in a tulip.

Appearance: Beer is definitely your slightly hazy amber with a white head that rises to about 1/3".

Smell: Light yeast, unfortunately everyone has smelled better.

Taste: pretty damn good, little sweet with it's yeast feel. Almost forgot to mention it's banana peel feel makes you think that you're drinking a grand cru.

Mouth: Medium carbonation, smooth texture. Slight and I do mean slight lemon after-taste.

Overall: Great beer, is very hard to disappoint. It is even easier to love. Grab a glass and enjoy what you been missing. Salud!

I feel like I have had this beer before. The bottle is really familiar to me. Not sure I would spend $10 on a bottle without a reason… but I am excited to try this beer. Last night we went out and I had a few to drink… a few too many. Started with beer, then went to Loopy, then Jager, then long islands. It was a mess! But I am here, and needed a little “hair of the dog” to get my birthday weekend started. Let’s dig into the Maredsous 10.

In the Glass: When I poured this, it was very thick and had a huge head. After letting it sit for a while, it settled to a orange and cloudy body. I am a big fan of this style, and the fact we just booked a trip to Belgium is going to help me enjoy Belgian beers even more!

Nose: The nose isn’t as impressive as I had hoped. We poured this right out of the fridge, which seems to be a trend… and I am sure the aroma and the flavors will pick up as it sits in the glass.

Flavor: Whoa, the flavors in this are insane. First you are hit with some citrus that wasn’t expected, then your mouth is smacked with a sour… quite an intense beer. Based on the aroma this was dishing out, the flavor makes up for it. The sour sticks around for some time, and hangs on into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: The beer drinks smooth with little carbonation, and until the sour kicks in toward the back of the palate, you don’t get much mouthfeel at all. It’s boring until the sour comes into play. But once that sour starts going, it grabs hold and doesn’t let go. They call this a tripel… but it tastes more like a sour to me. (I have used that word a lot… sour.)

Aftertaste: The aftertaste is solid… and quite sour. There is a subtle dryness that hangs around, too. For a beer that started off with pretty much no aroma… then beat my palate to shreds with the flavor, and then won’t let go on the aftertaste… bravo to the brewmaster on this bottle.

I have a hard time remembering how to pronounce this beer… but who cares. The flavors in this beer are outstanding. This beer has a huge ABV, too. You wouldn’t notice that all along the way. If you drink two or three of these, you will be feeling pretty great. I am a fan of this style, and now am a BIG fan of this beer! Bottoms up, people!

Maredsous 10 – The bottle says: “Maredsous Tripel is a high fermentation abbey beer, brewed in accordance with the Benedictine tradition of the community of Maredsous Abbey. The beer is refermented in the bottle during the two-month aging period. Maredsous Tripel should ideally be served at 6-10 degrees Celsius, or 42-50 degrees Fahrenheit. Contains barley malt.”

Poured from 750 ml bottle into snifter glass

Appearance – Pours a dark orange copper color with a billowy off white head. The head had fantastic retention, slowly fading to leave a good amount of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is of a fruit cocktail aroma and a good Belgian yeasty and spicy aroma. The fruit is of grape, pear, banana, orange and some mango while the yeasty smell is mixed with spices of some clove and cardamom. Mixed with these is a nice alcohol aroma that melded well with the others to give a pleasant and warming smell.

Taste – A bready and fruity flavor met the tongue. The fruit flavors are mainly of grape and orange flavor. These are mixed with some of the spice that was detected in the nose. Toward the middle the spice grows stronger and the sweetness fades some. A yeasty flavor also comes to the tongue at this time producing a yeasty-fruity flavor. At the end a nice alcohol flavor comes to the flavor profile and ends up lingering on the tongue to create a nice warming feel.

Mouthfeel – The mouthfeel is rather average for the strength and style of the brew with a carbonation level that is slightly below average. Both suit the fruity and boozy flavors appropriately and create a pretty good mouthfeel overall.

Overall – A good brew for sitting and sipping. A little on the boozy side, but this makes it is nice and warming and when mixed with the fruity and yeasty flavors it goes rather well.

A 750mL bottle poured into a Chimay chalice.

A - Maredsous 10 - Triple has slightly loudy, copper like appearance. Not a whole lot of head formed at the top, but enough to leave a nice white-ish layer on the top.

S - On the nose I get fruit, spice, and brown sugar.

T - On the palate it's pretty much the same as the nose. Complex, because on the finish I get some yeast coupled with a slight nuttiness.

M - Medium-bodied, yet crisp and clean. Carbonation is perfect.

O - A very complex beer that deserves time to be enjoyed slowly and savored. There is a lot going on with this beer, and it's fantastic.

Review from 11/2010 notes. Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a dark orange amber with a thin head and lots of lacing. Apple, pear and pineapple aroma. Fruit and Belgian spices up front with a bit of alcohol asserting itself. Tart but well balanced. Dry but flavorful finish. A very nice tripel.

Poured into a Chimay chalice. Copper like colour with one finger of head at first, becoming just half a finger at the end and staying in that height for quite long. A fountain of bubbles is rising to the top from the center of the glass's bottom.
Aroma of grapes and dark fruits. Something else too,pleasant, but I can't put my nose on it.Mango as someone else wrote? I can't tell and the aroma is quite faint, so it doesn't really help me.
Taste follows the aroma, it tastes very good, and it reminded me of roze wines, except that is of course carbonated.
Medium thickness on the body, the alcohol well conceiled, becomes though more obvious after the first sips and as the beer warms up.
A great beer, can't wait to try the Maredsous 6 and 8.

Maredsous - got to love that old school beer... and the 10 percent alchol by volume!

Appearance - a slighty darker color than a ale, a nice caramel light brown.

Smell - A vague smell of earth and hops, unfortunately it is a bit weak and you really have to take a whiff to smell

Taste - wheat, berries, mild hops, and of course the slightly stouter alchol, delicious!

Mouthfell - A good match of carbonation to the flavor, keeps it in for at least several minutes for you need another drink

Overall - A nice beer, but I was hoping for a bit more for the price/quality level.

Pours a slightly hazy copper brown color with a solid 2 inch cream head that dissipates slowly, leaving sticky lacing.

Belgian yeast esters of pear, apple, and mango dominate, with a belgian candi sugar sweetness rounding out the aroma. There's a slightly bready malt backbone.

Flavor reveals a lot of pear and apple notes, a bit of citrus, and some belgian yeast character. The finish is slightly peppery. Coriander adds complexity.

Body is a touch light, with moderately high carbonation and significant alcohol warmth.

Overall, a bit on the hot side, and not the most complex tripel I've had. It's also fairly watery, which detracts from the flavor profile.

11.2oz of bottle-conditioned goodness served in chalice-style glass. Best before 03 2014. Wild, fruity, estery aromas. Beer is a medium orange amber with a medium thick off-white head.

Flavors are sharp, both in spiciness and as brought out by heavy carbonation. Complex flavors I can't quite describe from the yeast. There are surely adjunct sugars in there, but the beer is so dry you'd never call it sweet. I'd say this Tripel is bold but not harsh.

A very, very good Tripel.

Appearance: Very cock bottle that pops a little smoke on opening. In the glass you see the usual sunset orange colors that I have become accustom with Belgian Tripels.

Aroma: Soft nutty yeasty aroma. Dehydrated orange, pineapple and peach smell from the fruity nose.

Taste: Medium body with lively carbonation and the sheer texture that brings a flexed smoothness to the mouth.

Notes: A bold fun triple that goes down with the obscure music of John Oswald especially.

330ml bottle, poured into large tulip shaped wine glass. Pale amber colour, slight haze, small one finger medium head, reasonable head retention. Had an initial fennel aroma, later on I detected some sour fruits. Tasted of sour orange and berries, pronouced hop bitterness. Booze only present at the end. Medium body medium carbonation, fairly coarse feel to it. Overall decent, but I felt it could have been more complex if not for the boozy finish.

750ml corked & caged bottle served in an oversized wineglass.

pours a ruddy, deep golden tone with just shy of two fingers' head; solid retention and pretty respectable lacing.

nose is a nice potpourri of spices, sweet malts, fruits - notably citrus with some distinct lemon zest - belgian yeast, alcohol, banana, and clove.

nose translates well to the flavor. has a candied sugar-like sweetness that threatens to push it into the realm of the too sweet, but doesn't quite. some floral notes evident, maybe a touch of pepper. also has a bit of an astringent quality to it, but otherwise is a reasonably tasty tripel.

medium plus body with average carbonation. middling drinkability: i'm thinking i will not be averse to another, but i won't be pining for one either.

The appearance of the beer is a dark, golden color. The head poured thick at first but dissipated quickly. The head leaves a consistent lacing.

The smell is dominated by the sweet malt and the heavy alcohol content, which makes the beer smell sweet and pungent at the same time.

The taste is very sweet up front then alcoholic at the end. A hint of spices is present, almost nutmeg or pumpkin, but there is no bitter flavor at all.

The mouthfeel is smooth, because of the heavy sweetness I think, with very little carbonation.

Overall the beer is tasty and strong. Not the best Belgian Triple that I have ever had but it is good. At times the brew is almost a little skunky. Worth a try!

On tap at the Abbot's Ale House, Cork. Poured into Leffe chalice

A: Kind of cloudy amber in colour, one finger head that retains a film, decent lace. Carbonation not very active.

S: Caramel, biscuit malt, hints of fruit, hints of yeast. Sweet smelling, and quite rich. Good stuff!

T: Caramel here too, right at the front. Nice maltiness to the beer with a biscuit or bready finish, and a great nutty aftertaste. Very enjoyable.

M: It's full-bodied and smooth, lightly fizzy, and rich. Great mouthfeel.

Overall: Great beer. I'll definitely have it again, and I'll be trying the other Maredsous' soon too. That being said, there are better beers in the style, but this is certainly worthy of it's place.

Pours out a clear medium copper color. The head is dense and rocky with superb retention. I'm getting a lot of lacing on this one, looks great. In the nose you get sour apricot, light grains and floral hops, and a Belgium spiciness. Not to mention alcohol. Taste is sweet mostly. Getting some fruits. Fig, apricot, banana. Also picking up yeast and a soft clove spice. Alcohol is again present. The mouth feel is soft and fairly creamy. Carbonation is pleasant. A straight up solid triple. Its a little different then average. Has a bit of sourness to it. Its good stuff none the less.
