Notes:
War & Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout aged with Peace Coffee's Guatemalan Organic Dark Roast. We measure out a pound of whole beans per barrel of beer and add it directly to our tanks, then allow it to infuse for nearly a week. It's a combination so natural, you may forget that stout and coffee once existed without each other.

On tap at Bryant Lake Bowl. Poured into tall snifter type glass. Had two glasses.
A: Not quite oil black with a dark tan head. Head is less than a finger and dissipates quick taking some of the aroma with it. Not much lacing.
S: Coffee and some roasted malt.
T: Coffee, coffee and more coffee. Hint of chocolate, did not detect much molasses or toasty flavors. Coffee really dominated.
M: Pleasant texture. Not overly carbonated. Smooth and rich like a typical RIP should be.
O: A fine RIP. I expected a bit more layering. But if you're having trouble deciding between a cup of coffee and a stout.. this is your beverage. Would be interested to see what this would be like barrell aged. Might add some needed complexity.

Capped 750ml from Aaron (thanks!) split into tulips with my brother.
A: Opaque black, light tan head with some lacing left behind.
S: Not quite in-your-face coffee (this bottle has a touch of age on it but not much), still nice underlying coffee/espresso notes with some darker caramel and malty sweetness. Hints of mocha too.
T: Follows the nose, coffee and espresso beans, some chocolate and roast, dark malt, again more underlying caramel as it warms.
MF: Creamier, medium-to-full body as it warms. More residual sweetness combined with lots of coffee bitterness.
O: A solid marriage of coffee and stout. Drinkable, with more than one thing going one, this beer has just enough sweetness to offset a big coffee presence.. Good stuff.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into an unbranded snifter/short stemmed tulip
Pours a viscous opaque black with an slight beige one and half finger head. Great retention, some splotchy lacing here and there. The nose is strong and bold: strong espresso, some dark fruit, and roasted malt. Espresso, bitter bakers chocolate, and hints of dark fruit with some booziness, bitter coffee and bittering hops on the finish. Low carbonation, big slick and slightly syrupy full body with creamy accents. This is a solid beer, however it also serves as a perfect example of how coffee doesn't always make a beer better. Although the coffee addition accents the roastiness of the base beer (Worthy Adversary) it also overwhelms the wonderful dark fruit flavors that the base beer delivers. In this case, the coffee actually creates a less complex brew when compared to the base beer. War and Peace is certainly a solid variant and enjoyable, however I'd take the infinitely more complex Worthy Adversary over this variant if given a choice.

I've been wanting to try this for a while, and now that it's in bottles that makes it much easier. First and only bottling so far. Tasted 6 April 2013.
Pours black and sludgy, thick, opaque. One finger of mocha tan head, good retention, decent lacing. A rougher pour yields two big fingers of head, longer retention, and much more substantial lacing.
Smell is nice, woody coffee. It's delicate but potent, and fully covers almost any stout presence in the smell. The only hint I get of the base is a woody roast and faint sweetness. Good, but I want more stout in it.
Taste is good. A rich, moderately sweet stout with a coffee topping. Molasses, nicely roasted (meaning not overdone) coffee grounds. Solid, but not amazing. The flavors are pretty well integrated, and hmm, kinda interesting. But falls way short of the top coffee imperial stouts like, for example, Speedway. I want more stout richness, more varied flavors, and for the coffee to bring more to the beer.
Feel is just a little odd. Not exactly thin, not exactly flat, but not working well for me. Oily. The carbonation takes a long time to build, and when it does, it takes longer to subside than I want it to. It's like everything is missing it's cue by a half-second.
This is a good beer. But as imperial stouts go, I don't find it to be anything special. Sweet, tasty, and the integration of the coffee is well-done. But somehow it's not adding up to wowing me.
