Enjoyed on tap at Monk's on 8/31. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a chalky, black color with a finger of purplish foam and moderate carbonation. Somehow, this manages to look fruity and chocolatey at the same time.

Aroma is packed with black grape and cherry notes. It's a bit tart, but balanced well by the slightest hint of malt.

Wow! Flavor is sweet up front with a roasted nut background. It displays a delicate balance between bacterial funkiness and porter richness. Caramel and espresso notes linger on the back of tongue and, as you swish, an amazing dry funk obliterates the taste-buds. Very unique and delicious.

The mouth is smooth for about 2 seconds or so before you're hit by a tingly smack of dryness. This proves to be a nice exercise in polar opposites.

I was quite impressed with this step outside of the box by Drie Fonteinen. Despite initially thinking a "Bretty" porter sounded excessive, I was really taken by this beer.

From the 11.2 fl.oz. stubby bottle. Sampled on May 21, 2013.

It displays the definitive Porter pour of dark brown to just about black with a lingering tan head and lacing. Good mark for the way it looks.

Aroma of toast, dark malts, yeast, and a hint of citrus. Hops are dancing around in the background.

The body is light to medium but a little astringent.

The taste begins with the dark malty notes of a good Porter but suddenly evolves (or devolves) into a sour ale due to the citrus zing and maybe the wild yeast.

I knew it was not going to be the typical Porter when I saw it was brewed with wild yeast. One never knows what to expect from wild yeast interesting as it can be to catch.

330 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Shy of black. Big khaki head. Thick collar. Nice wisps.

Smell - Dark chocolate. Some acidic notes. Hefty roasted malts. Slight acidic aroma. Brett, maybe?

Taste - Way more acidic here. Whoa. Grain and lemon acidity. Deep roast. Finishes roasty. Nice chocolate finish.

Mouthfeel - Lots of carbonation. Overcarbonated. Medium body.

Overall - Definitely not your ordinary Drie Fonteinen beer. Clean combination of sour and roast, though, which isn't a common attribute.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip. Very nice seeing this hit the states.

(A)- Pours a near pitch black color. Produced a quite nice tan frothy head with great retention behind it. Plenty of lacing left behind as well.

(S)- An interesting blend of mellow baked/roasted yeasty bread and raisin components combined with a subtle but present background of a tart acidity. Ever so slightly funky dry on the finish. Very interesting and inviting.

(T)- Almost exactly like the smell was. That same mellow baked/roasted bread yeast component meets a rich raisin fruitiness combined with a dry yet acidic and almost funky finish. Some extremely nice cocoa starts to show up along with the raisin as it warms.

(M)- A crisp and clean finish to this even though there is some mild funky dryness in this. Very much a porter, but I quite like how this is done very old school with the addition of a subtle acidity that plays really nicely with the raisin and cocoa.

(O)- I guess I can expect nothing less from Drie Fonteinen! As I have said, this is very much a rustic porter but made in the extremely old and traditional style. I really really dig this.

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a Bourbon County snifter

A: Pours opaque black with a touch of brown. There is a tan head of about one finger which fades over the course of about two minutes to a cap. Mild, spotty lacing.

S: A rich, chocolate-y aroma with a touch of tartness behind it.

T: It starts off rich and chocolate-y like the aroma, but becomes much more tart as I savor. The midpalate is a great combination of semi-sweet chocolate and tart vinegar, and the finish is primarily tartness with a lingering roast coffee flavor in the background.

M: Foamy carbonation but a little thin.

O: An interesting beer. Chocolate and brett.
