served on-tap into a tulip glass

Pours a golden orange color. It's very clear; no hop haze at all. It reminds me of Lagunitas Hop Stoopid in this way. Hop Stoopid is made with hop extract, so perhaps Double Jack is too? I don't know. Anyway, slightly less than one finger of off-white head sits on top of the body. Adequate lacing.

The aroma is comprised of numerous good scents, but it doesn't quite come together to a cohesive whole. Some sniffs yield tropical fruits, others more of a vegetal/plant material smell, others some caramel malt. I'd say that tangerine comes to the forefront the most, along with a slightly earthy leafiness. Some distant stonefruit brings up the rear. I like what's going on, but I wish it were more focused.

The taste has no problems with focus. It begins as a pretty straightforward, unexciting double IPA. Resiny & piny hop flavors wash over the tongue before yielding to a larger-than-I'd-like biscuit & light caramel malt profile. The finish is where this beer gets interesting. A subtle fruitiness on the finish soon grows to an explosion of white grape and peach. The length on the finish is extraordinarily long. You'll still be tasting the aftertaste of white grape and peach when you take your next sip. The aftertaste flavors inform the initial flavor of the beer so that each new sip is better than the last. Pretty remarkable achievement, though I'd prefer the beer to taste excellent from the very beginning instead of having to jump through hoops.

The mouthfeel is pretty nice. Despite the strong malt flavors, Double Jack is only medium-bodied. It's pretty smooth too; no harsh carbonation here. Overall, this is a pretty good double IPA. It has some faults, but it also has some flavor notes that are pretty killer. I hear that this beer is better in the bottle than it is on-tap, so I'll be sure to keep an eye out for a bottle of this.
