A. Black body with a small light brown head.
S. Bourbon with a light coco in the aroma.
T. Flavor is coffee and chocolaty but has more bourbon in the scent.
M. Goes Down smooth. Not meant to be consumed quickly but very possible if reckless.
Overall a great stout, better with age.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter
A: Pours a beautiful black with a brown head that fades to a ring
S: Nose is complex and full of vanilla with notes of earthy chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, coconut and oak. It begs the tongue to taste.
T: Chocolate, coconut and caramel up front, followed by big bourbon character, vanilla, caramel, oak and alcohol in the middle and finish. Aftertaste is delicious chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. Just a touch short of perfection. Too much alcohol.
M: Full bodied, I'm sure, but I've forgotten the other details. I was too lost in the gloriousness of the beer.
O: Taste is what matters most. I'd say 99 out of 100, just a bit too much alcohol. I'll try it again and make a better review when 2013 comes out.

A: Poured into a tulip. Dark and not penetrable by light. Small dark brown head.
S: Nice strong chocolatey and molasses with some vanilla.
T: Those 3 mentioned in the smell plus liquorice. Oh man does the flavor linger beautifully, a bit of heat and definitely a sipper.
M: I love it. It was thick chewy and coated nicely.
O: Fantastic brew, worth seeking out. And easily attainable in CA first couple of days of distribution. I do need to find some again.

This beer is one of the best beers I have ever tasted. the perfectly right amount of booze enhances an impressively crafted stout. Outside of eclipse 20 yr Elijah Craig aged stout I can't think of anything better. Only slight slight draw back is I would have liked some more thickness

Poured from a Bottle into a Snifter
A: Jet black with minimum head. Head quickly dissipates. Nice alcohol legs
S: Lots of dark roasted malt, bourbon, booze, chocolate, coffee
T: Out of this world. This bottle had 6 months age on it and there was a perfect blending of boozy heat mellowing nicely with the roasted malt. Lots of chocolate, toffee, coffee, oak, a bit of charred wood.
M: full body, sticky, easily coats the whole mouth with a sweet booziness.
O: One of the best beers I've had. There's really not much more you could do to this, a perfect example of a barrel aged beer. World class for sure

Bottled 2012 vintage, poured into a snifter with my Dad on Christmas day, a new tradition.
Dark as chocolate coal with creamy brown 2 finger head with moderate retention and sticky lacing
Smell is chocolate elixir and cocoa fire in one. Booze sweetness. It's the most pleasant alcohol booziness that I've smelled. Not afraid of being an imperial stout and a strong one at that.
The most sweet, savory, chocolate rich, boozy, warm RIS ever! I don't want to type, I want to just drink more.
Full body, moderate carbonation, silky
The best stout I have had to date, much more on the chocolate side of things, the perfect Christmas beer.

Poured from a bomber into a large wine glass. 2012 vintage, reviewed fresh.
A - black, almost pitch, but when tilted and held to the light, a dark brown sugar color comes out on the edge. Very little carbonation, even an aggressive pour straight into the middle produces very little head. I wish there were a teeny bit more head, but almost no complaint here.
S - absolute 5 here. Top notch. Vanilla, bourbon, some very rich roasted malt, slight oak. Can't quit huffing this throughout the life of the pour. Really smells great.
T - also really really great here too. Vanilla, toasty malt, bourbon, rich deep flavors and I can't do a great job of describing. There are some hops that come in at the end and really assert some bitterness at the end. My only (tiny) complaint is that the hops may be just ever so slightly too bitter. As he beer warms, I find the hop bitterness less and less off putting, but I still have to say I'm glad I have another to cellar for a year or so to see if the hops quiet down.
M - again, no fault here. Where I complained a bit about no head, I have to give the beer props for perfect low carbonation. Rich, thick mouthfeel.
O - Very close to 5s all around, but not quite. This is about as close to perfect as I can think of though, really excellent.

This beer has been on my wish list for a long time. Being a fan of Russian Imperial Stouts, this is a premium example.
Poured from the bottle into a snifter, this stout was a dark black with little if any variation in the color. As expected, virtually no head was present as a reflection of a smooth stout. The aroma was boozy with notes a vanilla and dark fruits. I must note the aroma on this one to be close to nirvana. On the initial taste, one notes the smooth mouthfeel of vanilla that is implied by the barrel aging process. The booziness jumps ahead of the pack with a warming sensation. Dark fruits, darkened malts, cocoa, grape skin also make appearances before the warming sensation takes over. The thickness allows the warmth to linger nicely. The smoothness on this beer is unbelievable.
This is a great beer for a cold winter night. I was not as blown away by the taste as I expected, but still enjoyed this one a great deal.

2011 version--poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass
Appearance: black in color, opaque, minimal head, high carbonation
Smell: oak, dark chocolate, cocoa, and whiskey
Taste: huge oak start, dark chocolate--especially in the middle, vanilla, roasted maltsweet caramel, and whiskey
Mouthfeel: very sweet with slight roasty bitterness, moderate-high carbonation, heavy bodied
Overall: Amazing and roasty RIS. This one has alcohol bite but is never overbearing. My preference is for Sucuba and Barrel Aged DBA, but this makes for an excellent third place from the brewery. I love the oaking and the complexity with multiple layers of chocolate. I will try to pick this one up again.

2012 bottle poured into an oversized snifter.
A - Pours very, very dark brown. Little head quickly diminishes to a ring. The ring sticks around, no lacing to speak of. Good look for a big stout.
S - This baby really knocks you out on the nose. The bourbon and roasted malts are clearly present, but the nose is far more complex underneath. Oak and vanilla as expected, along tobacco, leather, and a slight hoppy note. This is one of the best smelling beers I've ever had. Really remarkable.
T - Also kills it. Nice bourbon presence which greatly complements the vanilla, cocoa, and roatiness. This beer tastes full of dark, roasted malts, and you get the slightest hoppy note on the palate that comes through in the nose. This is just a pleasure to drink.
M - Perfect. Smooth, creamy, barely a hint of alcohol present anywhere. Coating and not cloying, the flavor on this lasts forever, and what lingers is very delicious.
O - This is one of the very best bourbon barrel-aged stouts out there, if not the best. Truly a treat to drink. Buy many of these so you have plenty to drink now, and some to drink later.

Pours bitch black (midnight black according to FW) with a one finger tan head that recedes to a ring of tight bubbles. Notes of bourbon, oak, cherries, dark fruit, dark chocolate, coffee, some booze and brown sugar sweetness in the nose. Taste opens with bourbon and oak followed by dark fruits in the middle of the palate. Back end is a pop of intense milk chocolate and coffee that coats the mouth. The alcohol is imperceptible. Mouthfeel is thick and coating, among the best I've had. Parabola meets the hype and in some ways exceeds it. Certainly the best barrel aged RIS I've had (still waiting on KBS).

22oz bottle from j47paco (thanks Juan!). Bottled in 2012. Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.
Pours black with one and a half fingers of tan head that leaves very little lace.
Smells of sweet vanilla, bourbon and cocoa.
Taste is a great mixture of bourbon, oaky, woodsy, vanilla, creamed coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, licorice, leather, earth and a little booze. Many fantastic layers of flavor open up as it warms.
Creamy but medium bodied with light carbonation.
A very well done and balanced beer. Great mixture of imperial stout with well blended bourbon barrel character. Highly recommended.

The beer pours jet black with a razor thin tan head that settles down to a halo around the edges. As expected, the nose is bourbony, but its 12.5% abv is well masked. Notes of chocolate & coconut fight against slightly metallic notes of bourbon. It's definitely a bold elixir that drinks smoothly. The initial sweetness followed by much more bitterness (82 IBUs!) than I originally expected. It reminds me of wookey jack except with a lot more bourbon and booziness. The mouthfeel is bold and full bodied and despite spending 12 months in a barrel... there is ample carbonation. The aftertaste is a lingering vanilla bitterness that is possibly to bitter for its own good as the contrast overpowers the rich smoothness and drinkability I've come to expect in a good RIS. Regardless, this beer is damn good, but I must admit that I've had some that are better.

Poured from a 22oz botle into a fine stemmed tuplip glass.
A- Pours a true opaque black color with a mocha-brown head, just about 2finger due to a healthy pouring. That head fades to a lip that will not go away.
S- BOOZEY right away, and strong. Once past the booze, there are notes of creamy vanilla, smokey oak, anise and cocoa.
T- Smores roasted over the fire, simply put. It tastes like it smells.
M- so smooth and velvety, great full and creamy body. But the booze just won't quit. No sign of the IBUs, either.
O-I'd like to see the ABV toned down or at least masked, and more than a bit. For me, I expect more balance in a RIS, but it's certainly not bad.

Black licorice, anise, and cocoa scents immediately greet your nose. Opaque black body capped with a thin tan head. Chocolate and carob aroma becomes more pronounced after a few minutes. Heavy-bodied, sugary sweet, thick and chewey mouthfeel. Taste reinforces the chocolate aromas; coffee and espresso notes; nice combination of hop bitterness and alcohol glow in the finish.
An incredible imperial stout: rich, flavorful, balanced and complex. The Firestone brewers have created a monster imperial stout, bringing out various malt and grain flavorings while taming the fairly high ABV. I hope to find some more bottles of this beautiful beast...

Parabola opens to a rich black coffee and heavy cream aroma, tinged with tobacco and ash, fig, prune, raisin, hazelnut, toasted pecan, vanilla, milk chocolate, and caramel, with a distinct Bailey’s Irish Crème and Ferrero Rocher overtone. The heavy barrel aging hasn’t so much imparted whiskey or bourbon notes as it has amplified the natural vanilla and smoky cream aromas, imparting distinct creamed coffee liqueur notes, as well as subtle oak tones, and when combined with the dark fruit esters, the barrel aging lends the beer a port/raisin wine edge. After sitting for a few minutes, the darker flavors seem to part, revealing a sweet, sugary layer of cherries, berries, and mandarin oranges. These are joined by pink grapefruits, lemon, and hints of pine from the hops. As a whole, this is a fantastic aroma: finely nuanced, potent, varied, and swaying delicately and dreamily between bitter and sweet, ashy and creamy, and easily one of the more unique and tantalizing Imperial Stout aromas on the market.
On the tongue, the beer opens with a huge shot of dark fruit esters, including fig, raisin, prune, plum, and black cherry, joined by molasses, caramel, and brown sugar. After a second or so a wave of heavily-creamed espresso shoots in, joined by fine tobacco and delicious ash. Huge vanillas and subtle oak notes follow, bringing about the port/raisin wine edge noted in the nose. Hold the beer on the tongue long enough and the sugars will die off slightly, revealing a grapefruit, lemon, and pine resin undercurrent. There is a slightly strong bourbon-like alcoholic burn about the edges due to the 12.5% ABV and the barrel aging, but this mostly blends well with the fruits and ashes to form a liqueur taste. Subsequent sips reveal deeper layers of milk chocolate, toasted pecan, and hazelnut, and the Irish Crème/Ferrero Rocher comparison rears its beautiful head once again. The aftertaste is a lovely blend of heavily-creamed coffee, milk chocolate and hazelnut, ash, and light pine resin, almost making this seem like a dessert beer instead of an Imperial Stout. Mouthfeel is a silky, oily medium to medium-heavy, and carbonation is medium-light to medium.
Overall, this is fantastic beer, and while it may not feature traditional, or even expected Imperial Stout flavors up front, I doubt many drinkers will care. The care and craft that went into this beer is palpable and commendable, and the layers of flavor would be more believable if present in the kind of coffee-and-ice-cream-and-brownie-liqueur desserts found in restaurants whose bills leave average people gasping. This is a definite must-try.

Pours a black body with a finger-width, creamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves lots of lacing throughout. Aroma is big, rich, smooth chocolates and caramels with a nice, roast and mocha backing. The bourbon and oak provides a solid addition without over-powering the big malt backing. Touches of vanilla, raisins, and a light alcohol hint. Flavor is similar. Rich, bittersweet dark chocolates up front with a good amount of roasts and caramel. The oak comes on with a lighter bourbon note as well as touches of vanilla, raisin, and licorice. Mocha, tobacco, and a bit more bourbon grows towards the end as this finishes rich, roasty, slightly ashy, and sweet with a nice bourbon warmth and dry oakiness. Lengthy aftertaste following a very smooth, mouth coating, full body and a soft, light carbonation. Overall, a very big, bold, rich, well balanced imperial stout with a solid barrel aged character. Not the most complex, but such a nice body and really enjoyable all-around.

Plans to go see paranormal activity 4 tonight were canceled, so I decided that I deserve this cellared beast. Into my darkness snifter ye will go...
A- a beautiful darkened body engulfs my surly snifter leaving a mocha oatmeal pillow case of foam that does NOT leave at all. It's as present as this initial pour and this is very rare
S- smooth cocoa nibs and chocolate are characterized as a contained vanilla oak of flavor that is fantastic. A darkened fruit surprisingly positions itself as just as importantly involved with flavor. Really nice with a slap of mocha at the end.
T- CREAMY chocolate surge of liquid vanilla flavor coates the tongue with a flamboyantly talented flavor. So impressive with the cocoa flavor that is massively enjoyable
M- smooth and coating. A feel like none other
O- yes... Best Russian imperial I have ever had. A masterpiece of a smooth crafted chocolate wave of barrel aging. Do what you can to find this

My birthday present to myself is cracking open one of the four of these I picked up this summer. I've been very excited to open one of them since I found them, and feel that my excitement was well warranted.
Pours a deep black. Opaque, with a surprising (almond coloured) head for such a large beer. Enticing.
The first thing I picked up as I was pouring was an almost tamari-esque quality. This got me somewhat worried. I've noticed such notes in brews before, and it's not a flavour I want in my beer. As I let it settle, however, coming back to smell it I did not pick up the same odour. Now it was all blackened malts and a cloying sweetness. Boozy dark fruits.
I... I'm not sure what just happened in my mouth, but I like it. The rich folds of complexity that are present... sweet, but not overly so, bourbon, but not overwhelming, alcohol, but folded into the flavour, not overpowering. I don't pick up quite as much of the oak as I anticipated, but there's some underlying things in there. Very rich. complex and tasty. This has been the highlight of the day

2011 version. Consumed on 10/13/12.
A: Poured from the bomber into a Duvel tulip. Body is black with a small - and quick-to-disappear - light chocolate-brown head. No lace.
S: A big nose - dark fruit (raisins & figs), bourbon, vanilla & molasses. Also some oak.
T: Follows the nose - and then some. Roasted malt, coffee, bourbon, liquid chocolate, vanilla, plummy raisins and some tannic oak providing a bit of bitter balance at the tail end, with some lingering roasted coffee beans as well. Finishes with a bit of alcohol heat, but that's not surprising for a 12.5% ABV beer. It's not overwhelmingly bourbony or boozy, though you wouldn't mistake this beer for a 7.5 percenter.
M: Heavyweight in heft. Full-bodied is an understatement. Carbonation is muted - it's smooth but never really becoming oily or slick - though it comes close.
O: Really good stuff. A tad bit too boozy for me to garner a higher score anywhere, but if you like the -bal aged, bourbony RISes, you might rate this one higher than I did, and I wouldn't quibble with that.
Note: As I hit enter on this review, a bootleg version of "Loving Cup" by the Stones popped up on my iTunes. Perfect.

2012 boxed bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, OR. Shared with @LaitueGonflable and @tobeerornottobe during a brewday in Sydney, Australia.
Pours a fine deep brown-black, with a slightly frothy, large-bubbled head of mocha brown that leaves speckled lace. Body is solid but fluid, leaving fine carbonation, but swirling quickly. Looks good.
Nose is an excellent deep sweet oak-aged stout melange. Hints of vanilla mixed with a depth of roast, with a sharp ashy tinge like the cold remains of an overnight campfire. There's a little touch of sulphur to it as well, which lends some organics in a slightly weird, but not necessarily unpleasant way.
Palate is exceptional. Incredibly smooth and rich, and wonderfully balanced. Deep darkness is obviously the order of the day, but it's blended and folded over itself again and again until it has no harshness in it: it's smooth, rich, and certainly dark, but in the most mellow and approachable way. Light oak gives some vanilla, but as ever, that darkness sits around and draws the flavour back to its midnight depths. Wow. Incredible stuff.
Feel is smooth but with a lightness that again antagonises the true darkness that is at its heart.
This is a wonderful beer. It straddles the dichotomy of dark and light, of good and evil of sweet and bitter. Of everything. This beer is a little of it all. Really great stuff.

2011 vintage, served into a Duvel glass
Pours a nice dark roasty black color. You know what this beer looks like. It looks dark. Lots of head, especially for a beer with age on it. It looks great. Not much to say.
What sets Parabola apart from its competition is balance. The aroma is so complex but so balanced: roast, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, coffee bean, vanilla, dark caramel, bourbon, dark fruits, cherries. All of that is there in the aroma, but it all works together. It's got fantastic cohesion.
Same with the flavor. Things don't unfold in waves, really. Its more of an "all these flavors are happening all at once, singing as if in a chorus, making a joyful noise together" thing. Fantastically blended, these flavors. It's a very sweet beer, so keep that in mind. It's not Dark Lord sweet, but its close. What Parabola has over Dark Lord is that balance though. Phenomenal.
The mouthfeel is full but not super-sticky, not ultra-thick. It's pleasant. I have to say this, this is important: there is NO alcohol burn on this year-old bottle. None. This is so smooth, so drinkable, that it should be illegal in most states.
While I can conceive of a better-tasting imperial stout, It's hard to think of one that could be better-brewed than Parabola. Everything works together. Perfect harmony.

Wow, I can smell the booze as soon as I open the bottle.
Pitch black. A little half-finger head sticks around for a little while before fading.
Underneath its boozey aroma I get significant oak, vanilla, and chocolate.
It's flavor is a seedless meld of dark chocolate and French vanilla coffee. Bourbon soaked cherries come to mind. Alcohol is NOT hidden. Milk chocolate and hot booze sticks around on the finish.
Full bodied, a little syrupy, with a prickly finish.
Enjoyable, but not a breeze to drink. To be honest, i think the bourbon hurts this beer. It's a bit too hot for my personal tastes. There are other RISs that I enjoy more. So I was let down a Little. If I think of it as a beer, I'm not a huge fan. If I think of it as an after dinner cordial, I'm a fan. It has its place but you have to be in the mood. I just feel that the bourbon barrel aging added an unnecessary element to a beer that was probably perfect in the first place...and took some of its greatness away.
