Notes:
Our latest barrel-aged experiment is the Faustenstein. This beer is a blend of our Fausten Weizenbock and Eugene Porter that has been aged in Jack Daniels and Woodford Reserve Barrels for 9 months. Faustenstein is one creation the good doctor would be proud of.

A - Dark brown pour with a reddish hue. Looks almost rusty in color. Opaque, and with no carbonation. Syrupy thick liquid sticking to the glass.
S - Scents of vanilla, dark cherries, and raisin. But in short order a boozy smell of bourbon is dominant. In a way, I'd prefer it to be less prominent and let the other subtle scents come through. over time the smell became more bourbon\whiskey.
T - Just don't like this experiment. The complex flavors are essentially killed by the overpowering dry sherry taste. It has a burning quality. I'm all for the BBA thing, but this seemed to undermine what could have been a cleverly constructed ale.
M - Syrupy thick, but the whiskey burn made this even tough as a sipper. Just couldn't enjoy it.
O - If the aging was toned down this could have been a winner. Instead we got an experiment gone wrong. Fuastenstein is a monster, and one I sadly didn't bother to finish.

On-tap at Revolution. Served in 5oz taster glass.
A - Light mocha foam settles to a thick collar and partial cap, with good retention. Dark brown body with some transparent ruby highlights.
S - Definitely a fruity Jack Daniel's note here, with oaky vanilla as well. The base blend contributes estery notes from the weizenbock and roast from the porter. Odd combination, but strangely compelling.
T - The taste is heavier with porter flavors - dark chocolate, roast, and caramel mingle with nice vanilla and light whiskey notes, as well as a hint of estery banana.
M - Smooth, medium body, with lower carbonation. Chewy, with a lightly tannic finish, and no obvious alcohol.
D - It's not Revolution's finest barrel-aged offering, but it's still quite enjoyable and well worth ordering a snifter. Hopefully Revolution releases straight-up Barrel-aged Eugene at some point in the future as well.

poured from tap at rev. poured into a snifter and pours a dark amber color.
There are noticeable bourbon aromas right off the bat along with aromas of malts, grains and some dark chocolate.
Full bodied with a smooth feel. Lacking some depth though along with flavors of malts and dark chocolate with the bourbon being a bit overpowering.
I didn't have the fausten, so I don't know how to fully compare this. An enjoyable barrel aged brew from rev, but didn't come off as truly special.

Reviewing the Faustenstein from Revolution Brewing Company out of Chicago, Illinois. Per the description, this beer is a blend of Revolution's Fausten Weizenbock and their Eugene Porter, aged in Jack Daniels and Woodford Reserve Barrels for 9 months.
Score: 91
10 oz tap pour served in a snifter glass and enjoyed on 07/24/12. Review is from iPhone notes.
Appearance: Pitch black body. Served with thin bubbly ring of tan head. Good lacing, average retention. 4/5
Smell: Vanilla, whiskey/bourbon, dark fruit, sweet plum and raisin, brown sugar. Caramel backbone. Hint of alcohol heat in the nose. A friendly aroma to those who like bourbon. 4/5
Taste: Vanilla, caramel and ample smooth bourbon flavor with a little spice kick. Brown sugar, dark grain and fig flavor on midpalate that lingers thru the finish. Hint of banana. Nice caramel-y vanilla flavor in finish too. Very smooth, barrel forward beer that gets bolder as it warms. Faint caramel whiskey with a dash of dark chocolate flavor in the "aftertaste." The weizen character is very subdued, though it becomes a bit more prominent as the beer warms. Almond and a little Belgian yeast towards finish once the beer hits room temperature. 4.25/5
Mouthfeel: Medium-full bodied, light carbonation. Slick, syrupy mouthfeel. Slightly sweet, sticky finish. 4.5/5
Overall: While not one of revolutions best BA brews, this is still a pretty damn good brew. I like this barrel aged mixture but when the red scare is on tap for $2 less...
Recommendation: Fans of weizenbocks are encouraged to give this one a whirl. I enjoyed it as much as the Local Option/Central Waters collaboration Barrel Aged La Petite Mort.
Pairings: Hickory BBQ smoked chicken.
Cost: $8 for a 10 oz snifter at the Brewpub.
