Poured this beast of a black beer into my tall Spaten 0.5 liter glass, it's looking great thus far billowing tan burnt caramel head with another pitch black body...Aromatics bring it out in the front line with green hops really screaming through the black patent malts, dark chocolate not much perceived sweetness in the nose. The first, 2nd, and 3rd sips are screaming with hops, there comes a point in every American Stout's life when they should just fess up to being a Black IPA. That's definitely the case here without being a style Nazi let me tell you what I'm tasting: Dark espresso bean burnt quality, dark cacao style chocolate nibs, rolling hops fields of citrus and earthy hops collide with one another to create a rather harsh sipping American Stout...it's rough finish is hardcore flavor as is the hardcore carbonation is a bit rough, but overall I can see the light it's a brewer bringing the revolution by calling this hoppy ass black DIPA an aggressively hopped American Stout. Only 7.5% abv surprisingly delivers the alcohol warming effect pretty well or maybe I'm high on American hops and Nicaraguan tobacco.

(Note: my scoring system is whole number only)

22oz bomber dated 12/12/12, consumed today in a Bell's goblet 3/5/13

Aroma: Very hoppy. A good amount of pine, a bit of sea salt with hints of roasted malt sweetness. Nice strong nose for a stout. (4)

Colour: Pours a nice dark cola brown, 2cm brown head with strong retention. Lacing is fantastic on this beer; after I take a drink it forms honeycomb-like patterns on the side of the glass that sticks for a good while. Not much it could do to improve on the looks front. (5)

Flavour: Full of piney bitterness put together with the underlying roasted malt sweetness hinting of chocolate and caramel. Put altogether its got a faint teriyaki flavour with predominant pine flavour. Very interesting beer. (4)

Mouthfeel: On the thicker side of medium body, which is thick for the American stout style. It's definitely not watery. Carbonation is solid. The brew runs a bit dry and the aftertaste is predominantly that teriyaki flavour sticking around for a good while. (4)

Overall: This beer is pretty good; one of the hoppier stouts I've had. It reminds me of Goose Island's Nightstalker but not quite as syrupy and a bit less hoppy. I think hoppy stouts are a bit of an oxymoron, its like a syrupy black IPA or something like that. However I know that hopheads will like this beer a lot. Looks good and smells good; but It could use some more work to bring the flavour together better and I wouldn't get it again the next time I come to Chicago, but I think it's a good beer to try a couple times. (4)

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Appearance: Pours a fudge brown color with ruby highlights; not that much of a head but what is there does a good job lacing

Smell: Really hoppy on the nose - piney and pithy

Taste: Hard to taste the stout for the hops, up front, with pine, pith and an aspirin-like bitterness that assaults the palate; underneath, there is a black bread quality that peaks through, though the hops continue to dominate through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: As others have noted, this is as much an American Black as it is a stout; with a blindfold on, I would have called it an American Black; I don't feel that the flavors really come together that well, but a hophead will find this enjoyable
