We pour a brew of pale golden straw. It holds a brief, but easily reproducible, one finger head of white sudsy bubbles, leaving big aggregates across the top, and spotty, patterned lacing down the glass. There is no haze or sediment, and carbonation appears light. The aroma is fresh with pale malts, herbal hops, sweet pear fruitiness, baker’s yeast, sea saltiness, brassy metallics, and light mint leafiness. With warmth comes more sweetness of passion fruit, and a drier, more chalky pale malt. Our first impression is that it is milder in flavor than expected, but still refreshing and tasty for the style. As we sip, soured pale malts, coin, wet wheatiness, lime rind, and mineral start things off. The middle peaks with big herbal hops, cherry sweetness, dill leaf, more mineral, and more pale malt wash. Washing through the finish was more of the same pale maltiness, light wheatiness, more of a grassy bite to the hops, leafy herbal mix, musky yeast, and lemon juice. The aftertaste breathes of citric rind, mineral, stone, metallics, dried pale malts, and salty sunflower seeds. The body is lighter, and the carbonation is medium, but with a hearty prickle. There is nice slurp and smack, despite the lighter feel, and there is nice froth on the back of the lip. The palate is cooled, but eventually dried with astringent grassiness. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks way easy.
Overall, what we thought to be the best thing about this beer was the nose, and the drinkability. The nose gave great freshness, sweetness, and hoppiness. These acted to push, really, all other flavors to the side, giving way for a curious mix of tartness and hoppy goodness. The flavor followed nicely, but lightly. While this may have dropped the robustness of flavoring a bit, it made for a very drinkable beer, and something certainly worthy of being for the “day time”.

DayTime packs an absurd amount of flavor and taste for a sub-5.0% ABV beer and gives Stone’s Levitation a run for its money as the most delicious sessionable craft beer in existence. I’ve searched in vain for the hop profile, but I am fairly certain that DayTime is brewed with copious amounts of Citra. In fact, following my second or third time having this delightful brew, I realized what it reminded me of most — Zombie Dust Light, if such a thing existed. DayTime is pure beer-drinking delight, and the only misstep Lagunitas has taken here is the fact that it was issued as a seasonal/limited release. Still waiting for DayTime to get the call to the year-round big leagues; in the meantime will just have to wait for the 2013 iteration this fall.
