What a surprise! Had this on a whim because the menu said it had a hoppy finish. Youza just another great big beer from these guys. Keep it coming!
There is something unique about the carbonation profile of their beers. Lots of floral character with that oily hop flavor that these guys are so good at. Time for a trip to Cali!

On tap at Eli's during the Dating Game. My editor was being set up with Hoagie's wife's friend Laura. A little too sweet for me. A very solid double ipa but I prefer hop bombs. While there is a lot of nice grapefruit bitterness there is an overwhelming syrupy sweetness to it. The individual components could have been a bit tighter. I'm knit picking here but at this stage in the game I expect a lot from a double ipa to bring it to that A,A+ level. Just like Laura for The Larse... this one really didn't do it for me. It didn't move once throughout the whole pint.

A-Presented a beautiful golden-amber hue with a one finger, bone-white head with good retention and ample lacing. Very nice appearance.
S- The hops are fragrant, piney, and citrus, especially grapefruit. Also, a sweet malt aroma present. The aroma is pronounced and pleasant, but not overbearing.
T-A nicely balanced DIPA with an ever-present malt backbone. Hop bitterness followed by a faint malt sweetness that is reminiscent of honey.
M-Mouthfeel is tad light for style, but is very easy drinking.
D-A good DIPA with more malt presence than Hop Stoopid. Would readily enjoy this again.

A: Golden color with a bit of cloudiness. A small bit of head lingered on the surface.
S: Lots of hops and floral aromas, smells like a fresh floral arrangement with notes of marigolds
T: Excellent blend of sweet citrus flavors matched with the bitterness of hops
M/D: Wouldn't drink more than one of these in a single session.

On-tap at Lazy Dog Cafe, on to the beer:
It is a slightly darker orange in color, like orange colored cough syrup. Great head retention on top, and it leaves some good lacing. Hops and floral hops make up the aroma. A little citrusy too. As I tasted it, I thought of good things. It's hoppy, but not overdone, and it's not on the "sweet hoppy" side (aka Hop Stoopid). Lots of hop flavor to be shared. A sprinke of resin, loads of bittersweet citrus, hops run through a radler, tropical fruit juice. Don't forget about the smooth, albeit lightish mouthfeel. The drinkability? I find it hard to believe it's approaching 9%. Nowhere to be found in the beer.
Forget Hop Stoopid, this is the DIPA you want from Lagunitas.

Poured voluminous head which reduced to nothing but a respectable lace around my tulip glass.
Taste is slightly astringent with strong notes of Guava and Pineapple.
Warming taste, alcohol is present, but very well balanced. Adequately carbonated, clingy dry finish...bitter beer

On tap at Stone World Bistro & Gardens. Served in a very classy goblet. WAY TO GO STONE. It only took them more than a year to transition their 8oz pour glasses from that hideous miniature pint glass into a nice classy goblet.
Comes as a clear golden orange. Looks lively. Nice white foam cap sitting on top. There was probably more to the flavor than what I will describe but this was a grapefruit hop bomb. It's fairly dry for its strength, but there is a noticeable DIPA type sweetness lingering in the background. Overall a general feeling of crispness to go along with that assertive grapefruit punch. Really enjoyed this beer.

On tap at the Rogue Ales Public House in San Fran. Had in Sept 2009.
Tastes stays in mouth throughout.
This is a Hop monster, crisp, citrus notes, great taste and drinkability. Great sticky lace that doesn't fade and leaves residual on the sidewall of the glass. Highly recommend this beer.

Golden with hints towards orange. Nice looking white head - par for the DIPA course. Great look, great lacing. Heavily hoppy nose leaning towards citrics over herbals. Some biscuity sweetness buried in there, but that's not the star, clearly.
Damn. Seriously, damn. Huge citric flavor. The bready, biscuity malts are destroyed early in the show, leaving the powerfully grapefruit- and orange-zesty notes from what I assume are a bevy of C-hops. Tropical and even medicinal overtones (if you have glaucoma, that is). Two tons of flavor.
Great mouthfeel, everything is spot-on. Great seasonal, and one of the most unexpectedly outstanding beers I've had in a hot minute. If you see a tap bearing the Extra! tag, hit it up fast.

Sumpin Sumpin Extra, on tap at Beer Run, Charlottesville, VA. Served in a traditional shaker pint.
Appearance: Arrives - or, is handed to me, as I see it being poured across the bar - a clear golden orange with one finger of dense, compact, tan head. The color is great, the head retention pretty excellent, and, as it recedes, it leaves great rings of delicate white lace, multiple times, doin' that great "every time you take a sip you see where the beer was before you took that sip" thing. Almost no carbonation to be seen, though. A great start nonetheless.
Aroma: Tons of light and sweet citrus notes - very orangey, lemon, and not in a pithy or pulpy way - with flourishes of caramel and lots of sweeter bready notes.
Taste: A huge bouquet of delicate floral and citrus notes, with flourishes and flashes of light grapefruit, heavy orange, middling lemon, and faint pine accompanied by moderate hop bitterness. All this over a sea of residual pale sweetness, hinting at sweet honey but with a kiss of roast.
Mouthfeel: This is a smooth, mildly carbonated brew, soft and a little oily, absolutely slick with hop juices. The slickness - when combined with the undercarbonation - makes for a very smooth but also incredibly dense, slightly offputting mouth.
Drinkability: Truly amazing lacing (I feel the need to mention this again) on a pungent if Simple Simple DIPA. Let's be clear - this is not a complex beer by any stretch of the imagination. But it's pungent and strikes a good combination among its various constituent components, much like Hop Stoopid manages to do. A solid west coast DIPA.

Four ounce sample, consumed 2009/11/14 at the Hollywood Brewfest.
Clear, honey/copper colored beer with very fine, one finger off-white head.
Aroma is slightly soapy but mainly floral.
Flavor is interesting - massively hoppy as expected, but with subtle touches of honeysuckle and a spicy edge (cinnamon?). I couldn't discern enough malt flavor to comment on it.
Dry finish with bitterness that lingers forver and a day.
This is not a beer I am enamored of; DIPAs are often quite drinkable due to their balance between strong malt and huge hop presence. This one is almost all hops and so not terribly drinkable to me.

A: Now here comes a fantastic-looking beer! Poured with a large, off-white head... eventually diminished to 1-finger size. GREAT lacing left all over the sides of the glass. Body is a beautiful dark golden color, and quite clear.
S: It smells almost as good as it looks! Hops and pine are present, with a strong scent of orange mingled in as well.
T: The orange and citrus tones come through at first, and then the beer finishes quite bitter. Pine needles are very noticeable.
M: Medium-bodied and creamy, with average carbonation.
D: I couldn't (and shouldn't) drink these all night, but this beer looks and smells fantastic, and has a great flavor to boot. Another job well done by Lagunitas!

Had on tap at Fireworks Pizza in Leesburg, VA
A - Slightly hazy copper hue with a fluffy and sticky white head that subsides to a nice white cap. The lacing is tremendous. My whole glass was coated in it after I was finished.
S - Citrus hops and peppery alcohol right up front. A bit of orange and lemon in there with grapefruit in the end. Very sharp smell.
T&M - Very much like the smell but with less alcohol presence than I anticipated. The taste is great with nice citrus hop flavors and a bit of sweetness from the alcohol. Grapefruit is the dominant flavor with a bit of lemon bite on the back of the tongue. Smooth mouthfeel with a low-medium carbonation that feel nice.
D - Definitely a sipper but this really tastes great, smells great, and looks great. Not overpowering in the hops department but yet are very pronounced.

A dull golden color with a sheet of white foam and a fair amount of lace hanging around. The aroma is very strong with a powerful grapefruit aroma. The flavor features loads of juicy grapefruit and some dry orange peel with a little bit of a resinous, piny quality. There's also a decent amount of malt sweetness balancing out the hops and keeping them in check. The mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing with a nice, snappy drying finish. A very drinkable DIPA that has plenty of hops that are managed well and aren't overbearing. Highly recommended. I've tried the bottle, tap, and cask and they were all phenomenal. Drink it.

A: Pours a clear reddish/amber color. At first a one finger white head forms, but recedes in a second. A touch of lace is left behind.
S: Really well balanced between the sweet caramel malt and hop bitterness. The hops run the show, but it is never cloying, and held in check by not only the caramel, but a sweet fruity aroma. Floral and grassy aromas as well.
T: Not as balanced as I would have expected considering the nose. At first a good malty sweetness is present, but quickly fades to a grapefruit hop bitterness. Not nearly as much depth as the nose.
M/D: A full body with medium carbonation. A nice and crisp finish. The alcohol shows a little. Considering the substantial bitterness, this is a good beer to sip on.
This is a decent to an above average DIPA. Pretty enjoyable all things considered. Worth a try.

On-tap at Capone's in Norristown. Poured into a standard pint glass.
Appaearance: Pours a nice amber/gold color with a great two finger head. Leaves great lacing down the whole glass as well.
Smell: Citrusy and tropical fruits. Some floral notes with a hint of a semi-sweet malt backbone. Not an overpowering aroma, you have to get your nose in there a little bit.
Taste: Lots of lemon citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruits and floral flavors. Tastes a lot like the aroma indicated. Decent malt background that is a semi-sweet caramel flavor. Light to medium hop bitterness that starts stretching its legs half way through and then makes its appearance in the finish. Just a little lingering bitterness and a slight hop oil coat on the tongue.
Mouthfeel: Average carbonation for the style that adds a little spritz to it, but it doesn't really linger. Medium bodied.
Drinkability: Pretty good. I drank one, could have had another but I was driving. Other IPA's are more inviting as far as being sessionable.
Pretty good, like Little Sumpin' Sumpin' more though.

On tap at the Blind Tiger 10-13-09
A- pours a bright golden light orange, with a think high foamy white head. Head leaves a great swiss lacing down the tulip glass
S- Not as upfront in your face as some other DIPA's, it still has that distinctive sweet grapefruit nose with some pine notes
T- I like my DIPA's more on the hoppy/citrus/piney side than the malty side and this one delievers. There could be a little stronger hop presence but still a pretty tasty treat for the taste buds.
M- Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel and very easy drinking for a DIPA. Would def. have again

On tap at Stub & Herbs, poured into a pint glass.
Nice amber color, solid white head with good retention.
Aroma is quite floral, garden like, with fruity, piney and grassy notes, alcohol touches and lots of caramel.
Medium bodied, this is one deliciously hoppy, but not bitter beer. Alcohol touches, lots of caramel, and a nice hoppy fruitiness that is never abrasive, quite well done.

Hadn't heard of this beer before finding it on tap at Rustico in Alexandria, VA. Since everything else from Lagunitas has been above par I thought I'd try it out. Was I glad I did! This starts out a nice, orange hue with a thin head. The lacing is quite intricate and consistent throughout the pint.
The grapefruit knocks you upside the head as you bring the glass up to your nose. A hint of lemon followed by a little spice really whets your appetite for this one. Bam! - the taste is exactly like it smells...hallelujah! I love beer that is this fresh, flavorful, and has enough alcohol to convince you that you're enjoying a real beer. With a medium mouthfeel, I was expecting something slicker, this ale has a high drinkability quotient. Careful though, that 8%+ abv can sneak up on ya'.
Excellent!

Tastes kind of like Hop Stoopid. So it's very good!
Pours a glowing golden with a bit white foam head. Big resiny sticky lacing all over glass.
Smells like tangerine, pungent grapefruit, and a bunch of indefinable citrus notes. Big citrus profile.
Taste is very nice, and quite addicting. Big grapefruit/citrus, some tropical pineapple in there, and a balancing, sticky sweet malt backbone. Surprisingly flavorful and balanced.
Lagunitas gives great value, and this is no exception. Sticky mouthfeel. Very good.

Well just by looking at the numbers, you can tell I think that this an average Imperial IPA. Color was a slightly hazy, golden straw. Not much head or retention. A typical hop aroma and flavor. Body?, yup, just about what you expect. Drinkability is what Imperial IPAs are expected be at, given the strength and tongue numbing aspects of the style. Not a bad beer, I'll have it again, but it seems to represent what Lagunitas has become. I used to look forward to trying new brews from them, but lately they just seem to be going through the motions.

wow. on tap at blind tiger in the west village. pours like similar west coast dipas - hazy orange, slightly viscous, fluffy 1.5 inch head in a tulip glass. the smell is hop heaven - bright, floral, fruity - my date actually suggested she wear it a drop or two as perfume to keep me interested. the taste was similarly spectacular - almost all hops, mellowed only slightly by a necessary malt backbone. mouthfeel was properly clingy without being cloying, and i would love to drink a few of these the next time i go out.
a wonderful beer - if you see it, drink it.

Enjoyed on-tap at Stub and Herbs in Minneapolis, MN. Poured a cloudy, light orange body with an off-white head of foam. Aroma was dominated by piney aromatic hops. Mouthfeel was medium bodied and the flavors again were dominated by spicy, piney hops that had a long lasting finish. Definitely not balanced, but good drinking if you are a hophead.
