22 oz. bomber in a DFH snifter...
I decided to drink this beer before it got too old. Saw a few reviews online stating that their sample was starting to age a bit too much. I was happy to find that my bottle was still in good condition!
This beer poured out a nice rich mahogany brown color with some reddish highlights when held up to a light source. The head was tan in color with very good retention in the glass. A blast of caramel malt and grain in the nose. Perhaps some wood and peppery spice subdued in the mix. Slight smell of alcohol along with some pine aromas. The taste fairly typical of a brown ale... toasted malts with a hint of coffee... the finish is the special side of this beer. Unlike a brown, this beer finishes with a nice bitter hop sting (which is fine with me... I love IPAs). Lumpy Gravy is full of slow rising bubbles which takes a little of the body away, but still it retains a nice moderately full mouthfeel. This beer goes down smoothly, however I don't think I would indulge in more than one per evening. Good beer... glad I got to try one!

This bottle has been hibernating at my house for quite a while, years I believe, but here goes; Pours a pretty murky, slightly golden dark brown color with a goodly oatmeal colored head and respectable lacing. The nose hit gives up a prune-tinged caramel and brown bread and Raisinettes and sweet fruit nougat. There's a hint of fermentation but overall this smells chewy and delectable, and I suspect there is some result from the aging I've allowed. The taste is a bit more grain heavy with maple walnut and more dark fruit ideas. I get some fermenting pineapple and more brown bread with a touch of milk chocolate here and there. It's medium-plus bodied with a fairly low testosterone carbonation and a bit of an aqueous feel, but I pick up some meatiness that's hard to place. Again, I feel the somewhat careless aging process has transformed this from the initial result, but I definitely enjoy it. Leaves a little alcohol burn which I imagine wasn't the case when this bottle was fresh off the retail shelf. I liked it, as I have the other Zappa series brews so far. In its present state I would say this comes a lot closer to some sort of barleywine than any typical American brown ale.

A dark amber beer with a bit of off-white head on top. There is a nice caramel and toffee sweetness with a touch of cocoa and dark fruit. Definitely a bit of oxidation, but not really the cardboard variety. Just a touch of citrus peel on the flavor to go with some other sweeter fruits like raisins. A bit of chocolate/cocoa, toffee, and caramel. Some subtle oxidation, but like the nose, nothing that really detracts from the beer.
