A: Head starts out fizzy, but surprisingly enough forms a decent head of sand colored bubbles. Body is crisp and clean copper color leaning towards the golden side.

S: Skunky hops, redwood resin, grapefruit rind and some honey tangerine.

T: First thing that hits is bitterness across the front of the palate. This is interesting because bitterness usually comes after the swallow. Bitterness is dry, woody and mineralistic. Frankly, the whole beers takes on minerally qualities after this point. Hop profile is very piney and woody, with out many tells from the tangerine in the aroma. Finishes with a really earthy bitterness…sort of dirty.

M: Medium body, hard across the palate.

D: Not a bad beer. I like my IPA’s to be on the sweeter side opposed to dry, so this one isn’t totally up my alley.

Pours a clear golden orange color with a white head. Still surprisingly hoppy. Good citrus notes, mostly citrus peel, as well as some pine and floral hop aromas. A bit of sweet and bready malt. The flavor is moderately sweet, but some of that is sweet citrus hop flavor. A bit of orange peel and some pine bitterness. Light floral and grass flavors as well.

Had this at a friend's house. It was 3 years old, so that might not be a great thing for an IPA. It wasn't gross. It was actually very mellow and easy drinking. Nothing off-putting.

Poured an amber with good clarity, a nice two finger white head that faded slow and left nice lacing.

The aroma was of biscuit, caramel and apricots. Some floral notes and hints of citrus. Grapefruit and pine notes.

The flavor is simple, clean and mellow. Nice balance of a nutty/caramel, toasty, bready backbone with floral, herbal, and citrus hops. Fruity notes of apricot and vanilla.

Very smooth, medium body

Easy drinking, smooth, nicely balanced drink

Poured into a Lost Abbey tulip on 3/18/11
Split with MbpBugeye

Though it looks murky while poured, it manages to look something of a pleasant, dirty amber tinged color. Hazy pineapple juice. The two finger head might be smaller in a less tapered glass, but no matter. The head is slow thin and lacing is pretty good.

Smells like dead hops. At best Kill Ugly Radio has shimmied its way into that oh-so-awkward category of DIPA walking the line of barleywine. That's a generous assessment, though. Caramel, butter toffee, candied fruits. Toasty sugar, but not terribly sweet. Thin ghosts of earthy hops and some papery notes. I picked out a timid Orange Crush citric remnant.

This certainly tastes like a dead IPA. Dry and papery. Spritzes of orange zest and residual bitterness. A little earthy, but mostly bitter; kind of astringent at this time. Toasted malts with an underlying candied notion. Faded orange pith and peel as it warms. At least it doesn't taste like a barleywine.

The medium weighted beer is riddled with a weird feel comprised of carbonation, paper, dried resin and, well, paper. Bitter finish is surprisingly devoid of dirtiness.

Drinkable but not really enjoyable. Smeat'll do that to you, I suppose. Tastes better than it smells if only because it was far from sweet.

Shared by Ryan011235 on a night of libation, trepidation and oxidation.

Visual oxidation
This beer didn't look too bad. Its a clouded, bright orange with a pure white head. Retention was fair and lace was sporadic and spotty. The first pours were much clearer but our glasses quickly became clouded. All's well with that though.

Oxidized aromas
Yeah, this is a case study in faded hops and oxidation more than a review or evening drink. There is lots of cereal grains, but some candied malts and hops are still there. I'm pleasantly surprised to find the sweet smells of orange pith. Salty water and lots of dry cardboard dust. Aromas of hot attic, stacks of paper and Boulevard Carry-out.

The flavors of beers past
It really does start out ok. Light hints of orange zest can be found. There is lots of oxidation though, and the hops are well faded. Dry flavors that are really a melange of stationery stores and dusty warehouses. Plenty of grains, some caramel malt here and there and some toasty malts interspersed. The strange thing I've noticed before is that even though hops fade and lose most of their flavor, their bitterness still remains, especially on the finish. This is a more of a "dead" worthless bitterness with out the nice hop flavors to make it worth while.

Can I get a glass of water?
Dry, but not good dry. I suspect that the bottle conditioning thats presumably been going in this DIPA for some odd 3 years how has REALLY dried this beer out. Its a dusty, papery dryness that really takes its toll on the palate, tongue and throat.

Its MY tick and MY opinion
This stuff has suffered the hardship of years. In all though, I think it held up fairly well. At times it was even barleywine-ish, almost, kinda. Oxidation has stormed the beaches of Kill Ugly Radio and striped its shores bare with shock and awe. Its left a shattered, skeleton of a beer.

I don't even listen to Frank Zappa.

22oz. bottle: Been saving this, hope not too long.

Pour: Orange-gold with a rich off-white cap, great retention and lacing.

Aroma: Peaches and biscuit malt some floral-citrus notes.

Good body, rich caramel malts in the front balanced with peachy esters and citrus-pine hop bite which goes bitter in the finish.

A great IPA and a tribute to a great man.

Poured a slightly cloudy orange, with minimal head. Pine and citrus in the nose. Tastes crisp; citrusy hops throughout. Doesn't really taste like a Double/Imperial in my opinion; not to say that it isn't tasty. Pleasant hop aftertaste. Well-hidden alcohol.

Bonus for having a Zappa label. I'd probably give high marks to Hamm's if it had Frank on it.

Pours a clear medium to darkish gold, nice head fades to a thin coat, good lacing. Aroma is hops all the way, with grapefruit, pineapple, a bit of pine, and faint earth and floral. Complex and inviting. Flavor is also highly hop oriented, with more of an emphasis on pine, a bit of earth and grapefruit, and a touch of floral on the finish. Dry biscuit malts, enough to keep it held together. Very nice.
