Hmmm, connotations? Lusty and full of sugar? Not too far off. Bold and interesting? More of less, I would say. Been on a Lagunitas kick as of late...I think I will make metaphors for all of their beers that I have had, starting with this one.
Censored is a swaggering Irish boxer who hasn't showered in a day, not two, so pungent, but not too pungent--you can still smell the sweetness behind the odious facade.
Still, it doesn't stop him from looking good, I mean, red hair is slicked back, he's lookin' sharp for an Irish guy.
Then he comes at you, boxer that he is, and when he hits you (in the mouth, hey I didn't make the sexual joke, but if you want to, that's your call) it's like your grandma punched you with a caramel brick, it's sweet and a little bitter, and like your grandma's punch, it's kind of soft.
If only our Irish boxer had a little more meat on his bones, he might pack more of a punch, still, he does well in his division. Nobody's complainin' here.

I served the poured at a lower than recommended temp- at about 41F.
The beer has better tasting and aroma notes at the lower temp.
Color: a beautiful copper color with a 2 finger head which resolves to about 1 finger.
Aroma: Light cloves and spice. I was surprised at the aroma- most American amber ales are not spicy, and the aroma enhances the overall character of the beer.
Good carbonation indicative of the style- tangy and puckering on the tongue.
Lightly and pleasantly bitter at 35 IBUs.
The taste, like the aroma, is different for this style: tangy orange, citrus, grapefruit.
Overall- a solid red ale. This beer is far more enjoyable than the typical American Amber- it has good flavor: fruit and spice.
The spice and fruit fades with warming. A colder temperature will bring out a good aroma and taste, and also a special tang. Stemware is recommended.

this beer ours a nice copper brown. a little head with a lot of lacing. smell is sweetish and malty. the flavor is bold and malty with a nice sweetness and the right amount of hops. they took this ale and made it really drinkable with out watering down the flavor. also, there is a smooth finish....they guys at lagunitas did this one right.

Pours a rich copper, cloudy and somewhat viscous. Moderate carbonation creates a three finger offwhite creamy head. Just Fantastic.
Smells of some subtle piny hops with a dulce de leche note. The caramel sweet malts are fairly prominent.
Taste is actually quite light. The citric hops blend nice with the pine notes. Light cherry and sweet caramel notes. Overall it's balanced, reminds me of a maltier pale ale more than a red. It is good just not as flavorful in malty or hop notes as other red ales.
Mouthfeel is crisp and clean. Actually fairly creamy for the moderate carbonation.
Overall, I was really excited going in. The look, and smell set this beer off to be great. The taste lacked some body and felt a slightly watered down. I am being hard on this beer since I wanted and expected it to be great initially. It's still really good, I will definitely have this again.

From a 355 ml bottle into a tulip.
A-The brew pours mostly clear with a few visible streams of carbonation...fine bubbles. The head maxes out at just over a finger of dense, light-khaki foam. The foam drops slowly into a thin cap. The beer is deep amber/copper color.
S-I smell some spicy citrus and a touch of earthy pine from the hops. The dominant flavor, however is a doughy, sugary, blast of pale and roasted malts. The doughy malt character is almost like piecrust or gingerbread. Its a bit uninspiring, but not awful, either.
T-The taste follows the smell with just a little punch of piney hop bitterness that is mostly drowned out the by rich, toffee-caramel, doughy malts. Alcohol is well-concealed, but you get a little fruity warmth as the beer gets close to room temp.
M-The feel is medium bodied with some mild carbonation and a slightly syrupy, heavy finish. Feel fits the flavor profile.
O-This might be my least favorite Lagunitas brew, but that doesn't mean its a bad beer. I just found it a little pedestrian, especially for 6.75% ABV. Also, when I see copper in the label, I guess I expect a little more citrus hops or intriguing rye spiciness or something...whatever it is that I was expecting, it wasn't here.
