(copied from blog - written January 16th, 2013)
Appearance – Dark copper color with a medium sized white head that dissipates to a thin lay of white foam that lasts throughout the beer.
Smell – Sweet and malty. Almost like there’s some dark fruits in it, chocolaty.
Taste – Hop bitterness in the back of the mouth but overall sweet, brown sugar, some sort of roasted nutty flavor, malty and rich.
It’s interesting having this beer because last summer I consumed SO much Lagunitas IMPERIAL Red, which is just an overly hopped amber ale (super delicious)… so having this considerably subtle, sweet amber ale done by a west coast brewery that loves making hoppy beers is quite delightful. I think my favorite part about this beer besides the balance where you don’t even taste the almost-seven percent alcohol is the foam that floats atop the beer the entire time that you drink it. If you like Lagunitas Brewery for their intensely hoppy beers, God bless you, but give this a shot for a change because it’s an awesome beer to hang out with.

I served the poured at a lower than recommended temp- at about 41F.
The beer has better tasting and aroma notes at the lower temp.
Color: a beautiful copper color with a 2 finger head which resolves to about 1 finger.
Aroma: Light cloves and spice. I was surprised at the aroma- most American amber ales are not spicy, and the aroma enhances the overall character of the beer.
Good carbonation indicative of the style- tangy and puckering on the tongue.
Lightly and pleasantly bitter at 35 IBUs.
The taste, like the aroma, is different for this style: tangy orange, citrus, grapefruit.
Overall- a solid red ale. This beer is far more enjoyable than the typical American Amber- it has good flavor: fruit and spice.
The spice and fruit fades with warming. A colder temperature will bring out a good aroma and taste, and also a special tang. Stemware is recommended.
