This is our last beer from Unibroue. That makes me sad. They are such a successful North American Belgian brewing company. That doesn't make sense… but it does to me! They use Belgian yeast in their beers, and make some of the best beers, best Belgian beers outside of Belgium. Like Terrible. Terrible is NOT terrible, and is one of my favorite beers of all time. This is on the other end of the spectrum, and is one of the lightest beer styles on the market. This is also not my favorite style, but there is a lot of history behind this beer. I need to do more research on this Celis guy. He seems legit.

Until we started researching this beer, I was curious where they got the name. I guess it makes sense considering where they brew it and the beer style. It's all coming together now! I will give this bottle my full attention, and hope that it is better than some previous white beers I have tried. It IS an old recipe and the brewery has a lot of history. Bottoms up!

In the Glass: Hold on… give me about 10 minutes for this head to settle. I poured an inch in the glass and the entire glass filled with bubbles. Not champagne bubbles… bubble bath bubbles. When the head finally did settle, the beer reminds me of Blue Moon. The head is white and fluffy, and I am seeing nothing but tiny bubbles rushing to the top. Fingers crossed this is not a mess of carbonation.

Nose: Now that does NOT smell like a typical white beer. It almost smells "off", but I am getting a lot of the spice from the coriander. Not much citrus here… hopefully that comes off in the flavor. It actually smells good. There is a hint of dryness toward the end of the aroma. Let's taste!

Flavor: Considering what this smells like, I am not that impressed with the flavor. It is not as carbonated as I expected it to be, which is fine. All the flavor really comes at the end. Not much spice and the finish is there and gone again just as fast. Not that I am comparing this to beers like Blue Moon, but I would order a Blue Moon over this any day of the week. Quite frankly, this beer is boring considering all of the other beers I have had from this brewery.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is nice offering a hint of velvet to the experience. But just like the flavor is here and gone, the mouthfeel is just as boring. I swished around the beer that last sip, and the bubbles just overwhelmed my palate. Some additional citrus flavors came out when doing that, but you can't due to the carbonation. Again, the mouthfeel is just boring. How many times can I use the word boring in this post?

Aftertaste: What aftertaste? This beer doesn't have an aftertaste. What is lingering isn't much to write home about. There is some subtle spice flavors coming through, but that's about it. The beer isn't getting better as it heats up, either. The mouthfeel is improving, but the flavor stays the same. Again, this is just not my favorite style. Too bad there is an entire section of white beers on our list!

If you are going to buy a bottle from Unibroue, get a bottle of Terrible. You won't be sorry. I will say, if you are new to craft beer, then you need to start with a beer like this. Not this particular bottle, but a beer that is light and has subtle flavors like the coriander and the orange zest. I will stick with my Belgian darks!

Poured from a bottle into a New Belgian tulip. The pour is a hazy light orange color with about a finger of fine white head that dissipates down to a thin lacy surface covering. On the nose I get faint aromas of sweet oranges, bread, and lemon tea.

The beer is light-bodied and has a slightly thin feel that seems appropriate to the style. The flavor is fruity and sweet up front with notes of honey and oranges. It develops to a nice mild grainy tartness at mid-palate with wheat cracker and lemon tones and finishes somewhat dry and herbal, leaving tea-like flavors lingering in the mouth. No diacetyl or other objectionable flavors. Very refreshing and easy to drink. The tart lemon-like notes and herbal finish become a bit more pronounced as the beer warms.

Overall, a nice example of the style, but downgraded somewhat due to the price. Witbiers of comparable quality can be found at lower prices than the $10.99 I paid for a 4-pack.

Poured from a 341ml bottle to a pilsener glass.

A: Pours a straw color with a rocky looking head ,about two fingers thick, comprised of fairly large bubbles. Color is fairly opaque once yeast sediment is added from the bottle.

S: Coriander is most present with slight bits of citrus poking through as well.

T:. Coriander is available in diminished amounts and complemented nicely by a citrus lemon zest. Typical witbier flavors are in play. Perhaps cloves and banana are a tad less prevalent then I would generally like but overall all it was balanced quiet nicely and was refreshing tasting.

M: Very crisp and bubbly with a quick dry finish. The beer is almost alive with carbonation and extremely champagne like.

O: A rather refreshing beer and its quiet good but nothing astounding. Its pleasing and decent but nothing that stood out to me. I have 2 left and a 750ml as well so I'm a happy camper. I might buy it again but I would take other beers over it.

750 ML bottle withe a 2014 freshness date. Started off with a problem I have had with other Unibroue products; getting the cork out. It wouldn't budge without using channel locks.

A- Not as cloudy as a lot of witbiers. I would describe more as hazy. The pour produced a fluffy head that dissipated quickly.

S- Belgian yeast, malt, coriander and citrus.

T- I prefer more of a grain and spice presence which was so subtle as to be lacking here. Very clean and crisp as it should be.

M- Light and clean, well carbonated and refreshing.

O- A good example of a domestic Belgian Wit. Not overdone on the spices but could use a little more flavor.

A:
Pours a nice bright whitish yellow, the color of homemade lemonade; with a light, airy head that dissipates a bit with excellent retention and lacing.

S:
Smells soft and a tiny bit sweet, apples and lemon a spring morning.

T:
Smooth and crisp with a touch of cucumber and flowers. Non-obtrusive and nicely carbonated.

M:
Flat refreshing 'beery' taste up front that mellows from sweet to a tad tart at the finish.

O:
Really good example of its style. The flavor didn't seem terribly pronounced to me, but it was pleasant (if subdued) tasting. Ridiculously drinkable. I remember seeing a travel show at one point where they said that the proper way to drink a white beer was in three gulps. Who knows if it was a crock or not but it always seemed beyond my beer drinking abilities (I'm not a chugger); however, I could totally see drinking this beer that way.

750 ml bottle poured into a Dogfish shaped pint.

A: Pours a completely opaque gold with a large frothy white head. My wife nailed the appearance by describing it as a "Frothy Lemonade."

S: Very perfumed. First I get a big spice smell, the coriander really coming though, also a substantial citrus peel smell. Very pleasant, if simple aroma.

T: Very nice, subtle wheat tatse. Big orange and coriander back. Has the slight "Fruity Pebble" taste beers with coriander tend to have, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It also has the signature Unibroue yeast tatse, which is a plus.

M: Smooth, extremely smooth. Very carbonated and refreshing, this is a perfect beer to have outside with lunch during a 105 degree summer day.

O: I love this beer. I love (almost) everything Unibroue makes. But what really makes this shine for me is that it's really the only sessionable beer they make. Yes, Trois Pistoles or La Fin du Monde are better beers, but you can't drink them all night at 9%. Also, I'm seriously not a fan of the Witbier style and the fact that I enjoy this so much is a credit to them.

An excellent example of this style, and a pleasant surprise for someone who doesn't typically choose "blondes"...

Bottle pours a hazy light yellow with a cream coloured head that has impressive retention. Nicely silky mouthfeel has enough carbonation not to be cloying. Aroma is fruit-forward, pear/banana with coriander undertones. The yeast is present in both aroma and flavour, but pleasantly in the background. The well balanced but typical Belgian white flavours have a decent grain backbone and end with a crisp, dry finish.

Loads of pear... a Canadian benchmark that should appeal to many!

appearance:
rich yellow goldness. cloudy lemon yellow center.amazing rising foam head forms a peak almost an inch from the lip of the flute i poured it after being advised to do so on the back of the bottle...very impressed.

smell:
sharp grains were my first thought, then lemon peels, something else is underneath,
havent even tasted this yet and i can already tell it's style, has a very nice nose, perky, fresh, something floral under the expected wiess tones.

taste:
the silkiest foam ive ever had. breaks down into the first sip, smooth, not as sharp tasting as the nose wouldve lead me to expect, very grainy but still so smooth and refined, heavy on the citral side of things. i see why this is so sought after , as the guy stocking it explained as i held one up to the light to see how cloudy it was, being a wiess id have expected a sharper maybe more sour finish, maybe a bit more dry, but that is just my other wiess experiences speaking.

mouthfeel:
once that initial crest of foam clears off , well..to be more accurate it doesnt clear at all, it just steps aside and lets the amazing wiess roll thru, but once thru the crest of that, if poured properly, it kind of explodes at the tip of my toungue, leaving grains and a slight maltiness in the finish. the citrus notes of the taste really combine with the mouthfeel to create a very nice back and forth.

overall:
as my tastes get a bit more refined from trying all of these lagers and ales, and reviewing them, I find that this brewer in particular has some very creative offerings, ranging from very heavy almost heartburn causing tripel ,to this session worth wiess. i would reccommend this to any fans of wiess. and this brewer. they have a certain something that carries over through different styles, but is always complex, and obviously held to a very high standard of quality. not something i would drink every day, but definatly not one to miss, aside from hoegaarden, which is about on par in quality in my opinion, one of the best wheat beers available.

While this isn't my favorite Unibroue offerring, it's still enjoyable. Very easy drinking, sessionable beer. More complexity than a lot of witbiers, which isn't surprising considering the brewery. I could easily drink this often, although it might be a bit more satisfying in the summer months. This went down fast, so it's clear i enjoyed the taste. Good job.

The last Unibroue bottle I will be able to pick up and review on my trip to Canada. I will definitely be grabbing more when I go back home but sadly not at the unbelievable deal of $5 for a pint and a half. This is the least dark, complex, and alcohol content of the 3 I've reviewed, but its nice to try something different.

A- Crisp golden with tons of cloud. Absolutely no light coming through, about as dark as a stout but with gold instead of black. A two finger foam hat appears after the aggressive pour to wake up the sediment. However, it says adios shortly thereafter. Substantial lacing as I take her down.

S- Not the most complex nose I've seen but with the style it stays fairly traditional. The lemon and orange citrus dominate the brew. with some yeast and possibly banana, not sure though.

T- The taste satisfies the nose with the fruity elements bursting in each sip. Still not sure on the banana...maybe...however the lemon is very loud, though not tart but very refreshing. No alcohol bite, which is no surprise only 5%.

MF- Pretty high carbonation and lemon combination feels like a cannonball in my pool on a hot summer day. Top 6 ultimate summer beers and also a top 6 cold winter night could go either way. The cloudiness adds to the fullness of the mouth feel which is very satisfying.

Overall, kick ass. I am partial to darker brew, but to review in accordance with the style I think it was spot on. That being said, I still really enjoy it and will pick one up next time the temp rises. And honestly when compared to blue moon i think it blows it away...but thats just me.

12oz bottle served in Newcastle "Geordie schooner"

A: Initial pour is crystal clear straw. After a swirl of the bottle and addition of the lees the color becomes a cloudy bright golden yellow. Sizable fluffy white head hangs around for a while and eventually fades to a frothy ring that lasts for the life of the beer. Nice looking beer.

S: Sweet ripe fruity aroma. Banana is the dominant scent. Hints of citrus and spice. Somewhat perfumey.

T: No surprises here. Not much to separate it from others within the style. Banana, maybe a hint of bubblegum. Slight coriander zing.

M: Zippy carbonation. Light body. Accurate for style.

O: Solid. Not something I'd seek out, but good especially when looking for something refreshing. Not one of Unibroue's best, but that is hardly a knock on this beer considering the brewery's lineup.

Picked up this beer in Western Mass with the "best before" date left blank.

The poor at first appeared to be an unfiltered golden yellow, but then after an aggressive poor, I started to get some sediment from the bottom.

I REALLY enjoyed the smell from the beer right off the bat from the cork and the pour. Its a nice fragrancey floral, maybe some clove and correander. They say orange peel, but I dont get that.

I was not impressed by the taste of this beer. Its very watery, and not very complex. Its easy to drink, and a nice mouthfeel, but nothing I would want to get again in particular.

Review taken from notes: June 2012.

750ml brown abbey style bomber. Corked Belgian style. Classy label with superb quality. Poured into a footed Flute like glass.

A - Lemon like golden with orange highlights in the shadows of the lighting. Lots of cloudy haze with a bubble effect. Snow white head sits atop and quickly resides to a fine ring of lace. Lots of sediment at the bottom of this. Hey, I freaking love The funk.

S - Fruity with fresh lemon, orange, and light grapefruit. Whiffs of sweetness and wheat along with a Belgian style yeast(Canadian Belgo in this case)

T - Very good yeast flavor with this taste. Soft banana, lemon and sweet orange fruitiness with a Unibroue marked wheat character. No real bitterness detected with a smooth, refreshing finish.

M - champagne like and refreshing on a hot day. Somewhat light while still remaining smooth and flavorful. Very drinkable especially on a hot humid evening.

O - I've had Blanche de Chambly often over the past 5 or so years and it deserved a review long ago. This was one of the first Unibroue beers I picked up and one I would recommend to anyone. It's a good representation of the Belgian witbier style and probably the best coming from North America. Canadian craft breweries are often overlooked, but without question Unibroue is one that are excellent at what they do. Blanche De Chambly is a very good beer in an often under done style considering its Belgian. This is a worthy ale in the warm months and fairly easy to require anywhere. It's worth the purchase for anyone who appreciates class beer.

A - Cloudy golden color with a white foam that settles thin. Some yeast sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Visible carbonation settles fast.

S - Complex scent that has floral and peppery spice notes. There is a slight amount of funk from the yeast used.

T - Light grains and a sweet fruit flavor hit the palate first. The yeast adds the typical Unibroue tangy flavor. The finish is only slightly bitter from a mild amount of hops.

M - Carbonated like weak seltzer, and a raspy feel. Light bodied beer.

O - This is a traditional beer that has traits of a belgian ale. Again, the yeast used adds a unique quality. I like coming back to Unibroue for their European vibe on craft brewing in North America.

The best Belgian wit I've ever had. Even blows the ones directly from Belgium, right out of the water. Poured into a glass mug, slowly and surely, shook the remaining 3/4 and added all yeast and sediment into the glass. Frothy, milky head that stayed all the way throughout the drinking of this dynamite beer. Smells of fresh oranges, coriander and I get a hint of the sweet Belgian yeast as well. Lacing is super intense, almost looks like I bathed this one in a bubble bath. I would say that this is one of those beers that you should point someone to who is looking for accurate depictions on the Belgian wit style. The BJCP folks out there should study this one and disregard lesser versions like Hoegaarden that, while good, just don't stand out like this great Quebec brew. Unibroue is a force to be reckoned with and it makes an Alberta guy like me happy that this one came without the whining and crying that usually comes along with most things Quebecois!

750 ml caged and corked bottle, best before 10-20-13. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a cloudy straw gold color with about an inch white head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like wheat, lemon peel, coriander, and some cloves. It tastes like wheat, lemon and orange peel, coriander, apricots, and a bit of peppery spice. The finish is sweet and fruity. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's crisp and refreshing and is also well carbonated. It would be even better on a hot day instead of on a kinda cold January day! I think this is a good brew, it's definitely worth trying. $6.49 a bottle.

The only Unibroue that is in mass circulation I have yet to indulge in! Best by 4-4-13. Served in a traditional pint.

A - A cloudy deep straw hue topped by a finger of a fluffy pale head. Receded in average amount of time leaving no lace to speak of.

S - Soft notes of banana, citrus, wheat and some candied sugar. Wish it were more robust.

T - Dry pale malts form the foundation, with lemon juice, apple juice and a touch of coriander. A light pucker due to sourness on the finish.

M - Fairly thin medium body with high carbonation. Pairs well with the lemon that seems to be the primary flavor to my palette.

O - Unique, well balanced and a solid representation of the style. I have grown fond of Wits due to their easy drinkability paired with that refreshing finish. Not the best out of this crew, but something that contends with some of the top notch in the style.

Poured from 750 ml corked bottle into a pint glass

Appearance- The beer pours a hazy straw-yellow color with a huge white head. The head fades relatively quickly giving a very light level of lacing.

Smell- The aroma has a strong wheat and sweet orange citrus aroma. Mixed with these are aromas of pepper, yeast, banana, and some coriander. Mixing with these more classic wit aromas are some peach aroma as well, giving it overall a rather sweet smell.

Taste- The taste begins with a nice wheat bread and orange citrus flavor. As the taste advances some peach fruit flavors come to the tongue and sweeten the taste slightly. The yeast, and flavors associated with them of banana and pepper, come to the tongue more toward the middle of the taste. Along with these flavors also comes a light clove spice taste. This mix of flavors takes the taste to its end where a somewhat sweet fruit and wheat flavor to be left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is quite light and crisp with a carbonation level that is slightly on the higher side. The carbonation and light body are fantastic for the citrus and wheat flavors of the brew as well as for making for one very easy drinking beer.

Overall- A nice example of a wit. It is smooth with good flavor and a quite nice feel.

Had this in a snifter.

A: Pours a slightly cloudy, light honey golden color, with barely existent white head that dissipates very quickly, almost no lacing.

S: Smells crisp, airy, citrus peels, fruits, white grapes in particular, wheat and grains

T: Very sweet, reminds me of champagne for some reason, I feel it's got white grape dominance to the fruity taste I'm getting, also yeast, wheat and grains.

M: Over carbonated in my opinion, but it not in a way that it's unbearable, it's balanced by the sweet mellow flavors, just really crisp and dry.

O: Overall, this is a pretty good beer, I guess I was expecting more. I don't know, but it's probably the wrong reason for this beer, its so crisp, airy, light and refreshing, It's probably better to have this guy during the warmer months, not colder. It's also pretty expensive for what it is, four double the price on a standard 355ml bottle, I' really expect something for that price tag to knock my socks off, and well.. my socks are still on. It's still pretty good, just over priced. Still recommend it.

Pours a slightly hazy lemon yellow color with a huge bubbly white head that quickly dissipates to a cap on top. Smells of lemon and citrus with a earthy herbal and yeasty aroma. The flavor is light and a bit tart with a lemony earthy herbal flavor with a touch of yeasty funk. Medium to light body with a spirited level of carbonation and a lightly tart and bubbly mouthfeel. I'm typically not a big fan of witbier, hence the reason I've passed over this beer for years. This is actually a pretty decent beer, I could see this as a future summer beer for me.

A: The color and appearance of unfiltered honey, with 1-finger of off white froth topping it. The head lingered decently, but left no lacing to speak of.

S: Pleasant, but not potent aromas. Candied citrus fruit, faint pepper, and the faintest bready notes.

T: Tart fruit, first apricot then orange, are present. Wheat and yeasty flavors are fleeting. Hops bitterness is mild, present throughout but fading quickly at the end.

M: Nice balance of crisp carbonation, refreshing moistness, and dry (but not astringent) finish. The sort of mouthfeel that keeps drawing you back and requires restraint to last more than a couple of minutes.

O: When I saw the "Unibroue" label, I knew from my past experience that this would probably be good -- and it was. Unibroue is coming close to joining Samuel Smith's as my favorite brand. There's no doubt I'll go back for more of this excellent Witbier (better than some Belgian versions I've had), and seek out others from their product line.

One of the most enjoyable beers for a summer on the patio. Light, citrus-y flavor and a smooth finish. The head is not overly foamy, can be well poured into a tall beer glass. Very opaque and cloudy appearance, not overly desirable to look at but the taste more than makes up for it.

Best before 4/4/14.

Pours a murky yellow with a fizzy off-white head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, citrus fruit, and some yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with a nice spice finish after each sip. This beer has a high level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

750 ml bottle poured into a wine glass.

Usually not my style of beer, so trying to keep that in mind when reviewing.

Poured a half finger, maybe full finger head.

Hazy appearance, getting a sweet aroma. Not able to pick out anything in particular.

Taste, as stated above not my normal style, decided to stray a bit. Particularly because today is fairly warm. Taste is solid, sweet with a dry finish.

Overall it's decent, wouldn't be chomping at the bit to try it again.
