A - Golden, slight head that dissipates quickly with a little lacing

S - American hops. Grapefruit and citrus.

T - Not much malt to back up the hops. I love hops, but that's all this is.

M - This is where this beer fails. Way too watery for the style. This may be good if it had any malt backbone to support the hops.

D - Light body would make putting down several of these easy, but why bother when it's at the low end of taste for an IPA.

12oz bottle from zrab11 (thanks man!). No identifiable bottle date. Served in a Southern Tier snifter.

Pours murky russet orange with one and a half finger near white head. A good bit of lace.

Smells like a hop biscuit. Plenty of piney and earthy hops backed by a noticeable malt sweetness.

No suprises in the taste, given how it smells. Very malt forward for an IPA with sweet bread, biscuit, pine, flower petals, a tad of garlic, a little pepper and bitter citrus peel. Quite bitter overall despite the malts.

Medium slick feel with quite a bit of carbonation. Long, dry, bitter finish.

In my opinion, Mound Builder is a mislabled red ale. From appearance to aroma to flavor, this is not what is expected for an IPA. Don't get me wrong- it's not bad at all but rated "to style" it can't hang. I would have given it much better ratings as a red.

12 oz bottle. No bottling dates.

Dark amber, with a thick, light tan head. Leaves a sticky cover, with good lacing.

Lots of malt aromas of biscuits and caramel. Light citrus and pine hops. Tangerine peel. Aromas of freshly baked bread with nuts.

Base of caramel and bready malts. Some nuttiness to the body. Bitter pine hops, with bright citrus tones of burned tangerine peel. Finish is dry and bitter, with a minty freshness.

Good flavors, but really isn't anything but an average IPA. I'd be happy with this as my local beer, but wouldn't seek it out.

Looks more like an amber than anything, clear orange and little head. Rather underwhelming, really.

Sweetly malted to the nose, some woodsiness in the hops - pine and cedar, mostly.

Deep hops - could nearly pass for a double IPA. Far more maltiness than I'd have guessed for an IPA. Candied sugar, alcohol and a hoppy burn from the beginning, lingering throughout.

The malts are too big for an IPA and there's too much burn from an overly-hopped and out of balance beer to be enjoyable. A dose of subtlety would do this beer good.

Going by the "Moundbuilder" name, this richly malted IPA clocks in at 6.5% abv. Although the balance more resembles an Imperial IPA, the strength is lighter- standard American IPA or Pale Ale in alcohol content and flavor intensity.

Pouring a dark copper color, the beer looks nearly bronze and with impecable clarity; much clearer than is expected from ales that require dry-hopping. A light and skim head forms on the surface and struggles to retain, but somehow allows for intermitten lace.

The balance of malt and hops begin in the nose where aromas of true barley malt and caramel (almost toffee) that contrast with pine or pine sap, fresh-cut grasses, and mild grapefruit. Fairly simplified scents are moderate in character and intesity, yet inviting nevertheless.

Retianing a healthy amount of malt sweetness and flavor, there's a richer-than-normal taste of caramel, toffee, and sun-kissed barley that retains despite a strong presence of hops. That's when the resiny pine taste, red grapefruit, and herbal grass flavors rise to match that of the malt for a balanced and satisfying taste. Though quite tasty, the balance of this IPA sides far toward the malts for the style although the hop bitterness is elevated. Slightly fruity otherwise with notes of appricots, apples, and peach makes me think that more English-like yeast leaves these fruity compounds and moderate attenuation to dictate.

Medium bodied, but perhaps a bit fuller because of the lasting residual sweetnes in taste and feel, but the beer's semi-malty upstard develops toward a seme-dry finish of alcohol warmth, hop dryness, and dry-malty character.

I understand why Moundbuilder is listed as an IPA, but the beer's strength, proportions, and balance is more commonplaced with the recent trend of American Pale Ales. It's a very tasty and enjoyable beer but when I reach for an IPA, I expect a surpressed malt character, heightened hop flavor and bitterness and far stronger ale.

Served in a Gale Sayers shaker pint glass.

I know from experience the Lafayette area is known for its concentrations of old Indian burial mounds... Anyway, this stuff pours a partly cloudy sunrise amber topped by a bit less than a finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises stark grapefruit rind, thick and airy biscuits (think Grands, baby), and a soft pinch of pine sap. The taste focuses on the biscuits, which are now dipped in astringent pine resin, producing an off-putting vinyl-like bitterness throughout. The body is a rather light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, an okay IPA at best, one I don't see myself revisiting any time soon.
