Tried this one at the Bloomington Micro-brew fest.

A - Deep orange/red with a good head.

S - Piney/citrusy hops; maybe some grapefruit as well.

T - Very much a hop bomb although the balance of hops seemed a bit off. The piney flavor overpowered the initial citrus smell. Finishes very bitter and dry.

M - Under carbonated which made the mouthfeel off.

D - I appreciate the need for ultra-hopped beers, but this one was below my expectations. Its finish is so bitter, even hop heads like myself can only handle so much. If it had a bit more carbonation, the grade may bump up a bit.

Special Note: This beer is from a growler did some travel time and so I can't say that I am getting the fresh carbonation and head, but that being said it didn't loose much.

A- Wonderful slightly red-ish golden in color with a surprising head for a growler that has traveled 3 hours and not "fresh".

S- Very solid piney smell. Hops are there too.

T- Starts a smooth malty flavor, but then about 15 seconds into the sip it blossoms into an awesome hoppy bitter flavor. It only improves the longer you drink the beer.

M- As I mentioned early this is from a growler that has traveled from Lafayette, IN to South Bend, IN and then waited several hours longer. So, on that note it isn't the best carbonation, but surprisingly very good for the travel and time. Smooth with mouth feel too.

O- I noticed that it is described as a double/imperial IPA I'm not sure if it is the travel time or what but I think it is a little week to be described as such. Although, this is still an awesome IPA and would drink this any night of the week.

Half pint at Black Swan Brew Pub, Plainfield, IN. Poured a very nice deep, deep copper color with nice head and nice lacing. Nice scent, fairly deep malts and a bit of sweetness, with a huge pine-floral hop kick; slightly unbalanced. Nice flavor, decent two-row; mostly it's a hop bomb, though; quite unbalanced... but it's not hop water, it's still a good, decently thick beer; wonderful pine and floral hits all the way through that last. Very little heat from the alcohol, too, which was nice.

The growler was filled today and I was told that this batch was tapped today.

A: This is a nice orange/red/amber color, a little hazy, little head on pour that reduces quickly to spotty coverage.

S: Piney and citrusy, a bit of grapefruit

T: A bit of the same as the nose, lovely bitter hoppiness; lingers in the back of the mouth forever, several minutes. Little to no alcohol too.

M: Meh, it's okay, but it did feel a little watery as it was going down.

D: I could drink this whole growler; the hoppiness doesn't overpower and the alcohol is well hidden.

On-draft at the Tomlinson Tap room in the Indianapolis City Market. Appearance was a mixed bag. It was a really neat orange color with good head, but was also rather cloudy for the style. The aroma was nice and hoppy with more of a pine, Chinook-type of smell. The flavor was also strongly hoppy. Not much of a crystal malt character. Too much harshness in the bitterness with a rough finish that really brought this down for me. Mouthfeel was good and though I finished and enjoyed the beer, the drinkability suffered from the too harsh finish. It seemed like perhaps too much/too long of a dry hop.

Had on tap...

A- Pours a semi-hazed copper color. One finger large off white that shows great retention. Streaky sticky lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Tons of piney and citrus hops in the front of the beer. Some bready malts can be detected in the aroma but most everything gets covered up by a strange citrus scent like citrus floor cleaner.

T- Big grapefruit and citrus hops in the front of the beer dominate most everything else there is. Malts come through for a short period in the middle where a bready caramel malt shines through. The ending on this beer is bitter hops to the max. Interesting to say the least.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is on the lower end I would say. Hops kill the palate in a citrus overload. Aftertaste is more hops but with a strong hot alcohol in there. This beer is very hop forward and there is no real balance on it. Alcohol did a drying number on the palate with each sip.

D- The drinkability on this beer is not very great. The balance should be a little better even for a hop head like me. I could only do one of these pints before having to switch to something else.

Had this on tap at Scotty's Lakehouse.

A: CLoudy and copper colored. Off white head that stayed around a while.

S: Smells of pine and grapefruit!!

T: Alcohol(which I like) and piney grapefruit are very present. Not much malt to back it up. The finish is very bitter. I would love to know the ABV??

M: No complaints here. Very nice with good amount of carbonation.

Overall this was a very good beer. I could have finsihed a few more pints, but I was with the family. I will seek this one out again when I go back, but if they have a Version 2.0 coming I would think they could improve by hiding the alcohol a little better and balance it out a tad more.

Had this beer at the New Albanian Brewing Co. on Grateline Rd. Served in an oversized pint glass. Nice off white head which left wispy lace. The body was clear and cooper colored.

The smell was piney and cat-piss-like (in a good way!).

The taste reflected the aromas. Grapefruit and alcohol were there too. A bit grassy and a little harsh.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied but it seemed a bit undercarbonated. Slick.

The on-tap version of Hopkilla is a step down from the fresh-hopped oak aged tapped Firkin. See my Firkin review for more.

There was little head but some resinous lacing. Smell is powerfully of pine with little else to back it up. It is almost green in its new brownness, lighter than expected yet packing a wallop.

The taste is big, bold of piney hops and powerfully resiny. Ultimately, it is unrefined and a bit sloppy in its presentation, wonderfully assertive and bold but still rough. There are many home-brew qualities lingering at the edges here, not yet ready for company.

There are so many things that I love about local folks being creative and assertive, and I hate to be critical, yet criticism helps refinement, and it is needed here. I can't wait for version 2.0.
