First review of this beer with its new name: Hop Sutra. Stats are all still the same. Poured from a 12-oz bottle into a snifter.

A - Pours an extremely dark copper--almost reddish. Crystal clear. Has rose-colored highlights when held to the light. Yields a finger of light khaki head that dissipates quickly. Small amounts of lacing, but some definite residual sugars in this beer as indicated by the thick transparent sheets clinging to the sides of the glass.

S - Piney and resinous as a good DIPA should be. Hints of lemongrass and some mild floral hoppy notes as well. It's hard to get a sense for anything beyond the hops in this beer as I am drinking it quite fresh (within 3 weeks of its bottling date). Possibly the slightest hint of sweet honey mixed with fruity alcohol.

T - Intensely sweet up front, surprisingly. From the aroma I would expect something much more immediately bitter or at least with some hop flavor. The bitterness doesn't really come into play until the middle where it melds nicely with the booziness and lasts through the finish. Additionally, the initial sugary sweetness turns into a tangy honey-like flavor through the finish. As I take more and more sips I do notice one off-putting flavor--a metallic taste that is detectable only for a moment in the middle of each sip. Has a mildly malty and grassy aftertaste.

M - Medium body. Quite smooth for a DIPA. Finishes syrupy and a little cloying. Carbonation is adequate.

Overall - This is an above-average beer, but in my opinion it doesn't quite hit the mark as an exceptional DIPA. It is a little heavy on the sugars and it doesn't have the IBU's to make it a big-hitter.

Poured into a chilled chalice glass.

A: Fairly standard orangey-type color when poured into the chalice. Light lacing around the glass that dissipates and sinks fairly rapidly. 1.5 finger white head when poured.

S: Again, standard hoppy Double IPA smell with a little bit more alcohol than I prefer.

T: Smooth, with just hints of hops and bitterness at the end. Nothing particularly memorable. Quite sessionable, actually.

M: Very smooth. Some coating of the tongue after drinking, but overall a fairly standard IPA feel.

O: Not a bad iteration of the Double IPA style, but nothing particularly stands out. 3.75.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Orange-brown, cloudy, chunks of yeast, good head.

Smell: Citrus, mild fruity yeast, pepper.

Taste: Sweet, orange citrus. Some fruitiness, a little bit of black pepper, moves to a solidly bitter finish.

Overall: I finally found some bottles of this one in Iowa so I picked up a 4 pack. A good Belgian IPA that the brewery calls a double IPA on the label. The Belgian elements mingle well with the hops so each takes equal footing. Sometimes Belgo yeasts give me some weird flavors but this one seems to work well.

Dark saturated orange, soft haze, lasting collar of lace and skim across the surface.

Hugely resinous aroma of dried mango, citrus peel, dank green hops, and a slight cattiness.

Slick and viscous feel, loaded with oily hop resin, traces of alcohol combine and render the taste nearly medicinal. Bitter citrus peel and green botanical flavors are big, also sweet tangerine and lasting piney resin in the aftertaste, light honeyed malt traces linger too after the bitterness subsides. Full bodied and very bitter, the 9% is apparent, and blends a little better as it warms. Overall a big brash DIPA from Iowa, only a small handful of those in existence.

Thanks for this one Eric!
