This pub gets packed to the brim on Friday and Saturday nights, so I waited to come on a Sunday afternoon. Then I came the next day for a light meal before I left Rio. It's across the street from the famed Copacabana Palace, and is just one block from the beach.
The interior is large and inviting with plenty of space. Wood column supports, an awesome looking bathroom, and the dark lit atmosphere gives Mud Bug that pub look.
There's some beer on the menu that should hold some interest. Guinness and Erdinger are the highlights among draft beer. In the bottle, one can find Paulaner, Franziskaner, Hoegaarden, Spaten, Hacker Pschorr, Colorado, Strong Suffolk, Therezópolis, and Leffe. Therezópolis glass with that beer, good. Paulaner Weizen glass for draught Guinness, strange.
The chicken used on my chicken kabob was very tender, and the green peppers and onions were crunchy. The red peppers were too mushy. Still a good kabob without the latter.
Service was both terrible and confusing. First visit, the service itself was okay: the problem was figuring out where to pay the bill. They make you walk all the way to the very back corner to pay, then you walk back to the front and give your paid tab to the staff at the door. Why not just pay at the door and go? Second visit, the staff was as slow as dirt, despite only me and four other patrons in the whole place. Without explanation from the staff, it took 6-7 minutes of sitting at the bar to get a drink, then it took a very long time to get my food. There was one guy at the tab paying desk whom both visits looked like he gave a shit about giving good service, so I'll give him some credit.
BTW, the staff speaks English, and I presume given the location is a hit with tourist types. Most of the patrons inside during both visits were speaking English.
It's not a memorable place, though it may be your best option as far as beer selection goes in Copacabana. There's also another Mud Bug in operation a few blocks west of this location.
