There's a "diamond of death" that exists in South LA County which craft beer goes to die. The points of the diamond touch downtown LA, Redondo Beach, Long Beach, and Whittier. Inside that diamond is a craft beer wasteland. But inside the diamond is also a sparkle of hope; it's called Shipmates.
I was taken here by my friend last night to meet some of his friends who live closeby to here. Shipmates is kind of hidden from streetview, so keep that in mind if you're looking for it. Our ID's were checked at the door as we arrived at 7pm....didn't see any kids or older folks there, lots of younger people. A few people were there when we arrived, but by 9pm the place was pretty full as the Laker game was going on. The interior is very clean, lots of beer and sports signs on the walls, leather trimmed seating at the booths, and a few movie theater-style seats which face projected images on a wall. A sports bar feel, but I like the way this place was set up.
The beer is what distinguishes this bar from other sports bars. 33 beers on-tap, plus a dozen bottles. True, there are a number of macros on-tap, but also are beers from Karl Strauss, DFH, Rogue, Stone, Oskar Blues, Angel City, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas, Anderson Valley, and New Belgium. Fair enough. But to my surprise, they also had beers like 90 Minute IPA, Brown Shugga' , and Double Dead Guy Ale! Cold pint glasses hold your beer, fresh tasting beer for good measure. Pitchers are available for some of the tap beers. But most unique were some of the "sampler" runs they offer. Here's one beer geeks would care most about: for $14, you can choose ANY ten beers and have each beer served in 6 ounce samples.
The prices are great by SoCal standards. There are monthly specials on some of the beers (yes, even craft beer!), beers don't exceed $5 a pint, and most sandwich entrees w/fries are between $6-7! The food prices look like something out of 1997.
There's a BJ's nearby, but apart from that, you'll need to drive 15 minutes from here to find a quality craft beer stop. I wouldn't mind having a place like this near my hometown. I'm sure my friend will want to take me back in the future, and I won't have any qualms joining him.

Nice little bar located in cerritos, just across the street from the cerritos mall. This bar has an awesome beer selection (considering the area). I was there the other night and they were carrying: bear republics racer 5, stone ruination, stone AB, anderson valley IPA, Port brewings wipe-out IPA, karl stauss oatmeal stout, big sky's moose drool and prob a few others I am forgetting. I hear they are getting ready to carry Bootleggers brewery, a local brewery out of Fullerton, ca, so I'm pretty excited about that.
Young crowd, dj spins good music (I think every other sat or something).
Oh yeah, and they also serve lumpia (filipino egg rolls) that are really good.
