What with my work place still closed due to the ongoing power outage, I've had some unexpected free time of late. So thought I'd take a drive up to Vito's for lunch.
Located in a pretty unassuming building in a small strip mall, my initial impressoin was that the place was closed when I drove up. Other than the sign over the top of the building, there's nothing to tip you off to the restaurant here, with no neon signs or "open" sign in the window. As you walk in, the first thing you notice is that there's a dining area to the left and a lounge to the right. I entered the lounge area, where I encountered a sizeable wrap around bar taking center stage (seating at least 30 or 35 folks), but with also a few small tables as well. There's not a whole lot to the lounge area otherwise; there are 6 flat screen TV's, some horse racing pictures on the walls, a couple of Godfather I and II posters, and then a couple of beer signs. For good or for bad, this place just screams "bar." However, the AC worked fine and the place was clean, which is all I required.
In terms of beer, Vito's has 10 beers on tap, half of which is devoted to BMC stuff (coors lite, bud, etc.). They also had samuel adams and yuengling, but also had a Victory pale ale, Port brewing wipe out IPA, the flying mouflan and then Young's Double Chocolate on nitro. So the draft selection is nothing to get very excited about, but then there's also a cold box with a consirerable selection of craft bottles and cans, along with a sizeable selection of BMC stuff. The selection seemed to run about half and half; half macro and half craft/imports. The selection is solid, but don't expect to find any rareties (based on what I saw). More interesting selections included the rochfort 8, alesmith IPA and SN Hoptimum.
Service was OK. The woman working here was pleasant and fairly quick. It was apparent she didn't know a whole lot about craft beer, but I don't get the impression that's much of a prerequisite with most of the crowd here. On this day (around 1:00), there was a smattering of regulars (older crowd), all of whom seemed to be on a first name basis with the bartender (it's that kind of place).
As for food, I got a couple of slices of pizza. Again, while nothing extraordinary, I was happy with the quality of what I ordered. Prices were fairly reasonable (it appears they offer the full restaurant menu in the lounge). My two slices and a pint of wipeout IPA came to just over $18, so I guess craft pices are in the $4.50 range (I didn't see any price for beer on the menu). I was also told that one can grab anything from the cold box to take home or enjoy in the bar (none of the 6 packs were broken, so I'm assuming not a lot of this goes on).
Shrug. There's nothing at all wrong with this place, but by the same token, it obviously doesn't compare to some of the better beer bars in the area (Al's, TJ's, the Drafting Room, etc.). However, given what seems to be available in York (other than the cobblestone, not much), this is a place to keep in mind if one wants to find a decent beer selection in town. That being said... it's not really a destination spot for out of town BA's. I doubt I'll come by again any time soon.

I grew up in York, so I've been coming here since I was young. The pizza and appetizers are great, I can't think of anything I've tried that wasn't good.
When they remodeled the bar they also really improved the craft beer selection. I believe they have ~10 beers on draft. The beer manager is a hop head, so it's not uncommon to see two hoppy selections when visiting. Typically 5 of the taps are craft and 5 are BMC. Some examples of beers I've seen on tap on recent visits include: Founder's Double Trouble, Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale, Stone IPA, Bell's Two Hearted, 21st Amendment Hop Crisis, Sam Adams Noble Pils, Cigar City Jai Alai IPA, and Brew Works Hopsolutely.
If something on tap doesn't spark your interest you can also buy singles from the cooler or for take out. The selection is above average for the York area. It's common to see year round and sesonal beers for Troegs, Founders, Bell's, Cigar City, Stone, Rogue, Ballast Point, Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada, Heavy Seas, Sixpoint, and Lagunitas. Most of the beers are 12oz 4 or 6 packs, but they also have about 10 -15 bombers/750s. You can occasionally find some other unexpected treats like Alesmith on visits.
During my most recent visit I picked up 2 4-packs of fresh Founder's Breakfast Stout. The beers are reasonably priced. The service is mostly good, sometimes though it can take a bit to buy beer to go at the bar if it is busy. The bar is long and rectangular with plenty of open space and about 6-8 tables to sit. There is also restaurant seating on the other side(although you can still order food from the bar).
I highly recommend checking this place out if you are ever in York, since York is not known for it's good beer bars/stores.

I have been going to Vitos for as long as I can remember. I liked it even when it had the old floor plan, dark restaraunt on the left when you walked in, dark bar on the right side when you walk in.
They recently renovated and they did a really nice job. The new bar area has a nice open floor plan with a large bar in the middle. They have a few nice selections on tap - I had a Youngs Double Chocolate Stout on tap there - but not many. They also have a better than average bottle selection.
The restaraunt side also features a nice open bright floor plan. The food has always been great at Vitos. Good pizza, and good subs and fries.
Order at the counter, grab a beer and a table and your food will quickly arrive at your table.
They also have NHL Center Ice which is rare in York.

My 100th beerfly review
I have been to Vito's twice before - once for a company gathering when I worked for a metal shop that made concrete finishing tools and about 9 months ago when we wanted some brews to share after brewing up a batch of cream ale.
I stopped in after work today to have a pint and was greeted by the newly remodeled Vito's with is brighter, cleaner and classier without losing any of its neighborhood charm, the bar is long and the area around the bar is spacious with the sixpack and bottle cooler on the righ side of the bar. The restaurant side is to the left when you walk in the front door with plenty of tables and it is well lit without coming off as too bright.
The quality of Vito's is generally high, they show attention to detail and are interested in customer satisfaction. The service I have received has always been friendly and efficient - they know how to have a good time and keep the mood light and enjoyable. I haven't had the food, but want to try it, the pizza looks great and I overheard others commenting on how much the enjoyed the subs. The menu is decent with plenty of choices including bolis, subs, pizza ans salads and other italian entrees such as lasagna.
The selection is good -they have about 10 taps with many craft choices such as Stone IPA, Samuel Adams Noble Pils, Smuttynose Finest Kind to name a few. The cooler is well stocked with craft choices like Two hearted, Boont Esb Troegs Pale and Philadelphia Brewing Company Joe Porter. They have seasonals like Nugget Nectar and Hopslam currently. They also carry imports such as Duvel, Hoegarden, Samuel Smiths and Leffe. While there is room for improvement as they carry lots of Bud Miller and Coors, it is balanced with craft overall.
I consider Vito's pretty reasonable overall and the prices for takeout beer are in line with other places in the area I am sure I will return and have a draft and eat in the future.
