I'm not sure this was that different from their other ESB and as such I like it very similarly. Nice caramel, smooth malt, little biscuit and floral hop.

12oz bottle, I had this one a few years ago, but I figured it was time for a retry.
A - brown body with some haze, very thin khaki colored head
S - boozy nose with brown sugar, wet grain, earthy hops, pine
T - nice and malty with toasted grain, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and bread crust along with some bitterness in the way of earth and pine
M - fuller body, a bit resinous, alcohol warming but hot at times, piny bitterness lingering on the semi-dry finish
O - I like that they took the ESB to another level with this one. It was nice to come back to again, but I doubt I'd get it again in the future.

L: Pours a cloudy dark amber with a thin light tan head

S: Caramel and brown bread crust. Toffee and some mild dark fruit. Little earthy hop.

T: Nice balance of malt and bitter hops. Semi sweet malt but finished dry, maybe a slight bit astringent. Nice malt profile but a little bit one dimensional in flavor, although that dimension is tasty.

F: medium body, low carbonation.

O: Not bad at all. I have to say I do prefer Fullers, but for a domestic ESB, it's good. I might order this when dining out. Just OK.

Bottle > Shaker Pint

A - Cloudy brown with some chunky goodness floating around in it, half a finger of off white soapy head.
S - Love the aroma, sweet caramel malt, toasted nuttiness, pine, earthy hops
T - Bleh, sweetness is a bit too much here, up front you get caramel sweetness some bready malt as well, then its dry soapy bitterness
M - Chewy yet overly bitter and soapy slickness.
O - Scottish ESB? Pass

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a snifter.

A - Pours a clear, slightly red copper. Thin, off-white head.

S - Berries, stone fruit, earthy, spicy hops.

T - A berrylike, almost citrus-y hop flavor comes up front, equally balanced by a sweet, buttery malt backbone. The tropical notes fade into more herbal, floral flavors, which give the malt an interesting new perspective. Nice, crispy residual bitterness.

M - Medium body, easy carbonation. Slightly dry from the bitterness.

O - Very interesting plethora of hop flavors while having a nice sweetness to it.

so glad this came back around, this is one of those beers that forces you to respect breck as a brewery, despite the mostly lame seasonal program and a real focus on growth rather than innovation of late. this is just so good, a classic enlgish type, i love the grain, the yeast and the hops, all the elements in perfect harmony in an example of the style that is both darker in color and stronger in alcohol than its european forefathers. almost red in color, rust to brick sort of look, beige creamy head almost a full inch high in my globe. it smells awesome to, dry for the style, not stale malty but rich without being sugary. there is what i would call a near perfect balance in the hop/grain intersection, and the beer feels better than authentic in some ways. when you can take an old world style, and improve upon it without doing much different to the ingredients, you have become revolutionary, or at least evolutionary, and i think this is a pretty cool illustration of that process that is all too uncommon in the industry these days. well done tip of the cap to tradition, but this is better than almost any european extra special bitter i can think of.
