This beer is such a disappointment. Its not that I've been blown away by Breckenridge's offerings, but its even below the average stuff they churn out.
First of all, this hardly gets your mouth watering when you can see easily all the way through it without even holding it to light. Its far from black and there is no head to speak of.
Vanilla is oily, and clouds most everything else. It doesn't seem like it was brewed with vanilla beans, but rather like they took a weak porter and poured some extract in it.
Its fine as a session if watery and clear porters are your thing.

Appearance: Dark copper/chestnut; big frothy beige head after aggressive pour; good lacing

Smell: Faint roasted grains is about all I can pick up; maybe some vanilla, but that might be because I know it's in there.

Taste: Vanilla notes hit you right up front; followed quickly by some roasted grain and chocolate; picking up some light hops, but not a lot; no real lingering aftertaste; smooth, but nothing overly impressive

Mouthfeel: a little thin

Pours with a full head and a deep black coloring with the characteristic red undertones of a porter, the head recedes fairly quickly with minimal lacing. There is not much to the aroma, sort of an earthy horse blanket. Thankfully the flavor is not too overpowering vanilla sweet, in fact it's a rustic porter flavor with just a hint of vanilla as well as currant and brandy, despite the 4.7 abv. The mouthfeel is pretty standard for a dark ale, lingering but not too thick/cloying. Overall it's a decent porter but def not in the top tier of the style.
