On Nitro at the Flying Saucer in Houston, TX. Labeled as Thunder Stout, but is the oatmeal stout for sure.
A: Pours a dark brown color, nearly black with some ruby highlights around the edges. A two finger tan head forms, and recedes in a second. Lace is left behind.
S: Lightly toasted malt. Plenty of sweetness. Buttery diacetyl is present in the nose.
T: Buttery diacetyl just takes over. A light sweetness lingers, though nothing else.
M/D: Thin and watery. Pretty typical for a beer on Nitro. That pseudo type of creaminess which is associated with this type of beer, though is severely lacking in body. Not hard to drink. Though nothing I care to come back to.
Very generic on Nitro, and the diacety really detracts. Pretty much ho hum with some flaws. Not something I would recommend.

Had this at the Breckenridge Alehouse in Grand Junction. I don't think this beer is bottled and locally I've only seen it at the Breckenridge owned restaurants.
This one was on nitro and extra cool, however it was also a 100 degree afternoon and I honestly couldn't have been happier.
Arrived a deep brown with a typical nitro creamy white head.
Unlike most other nitro beers, there was quite a nose. Roasted malts, bready sweetness, chocolate, and molasses.
The flavor starts with a pretty healthy dose of molasses and follows with cocoa, a hint of a latte, and closes with a mild toastiness and bittering hops.
Mouthfeel was pretty standard for a nitro-tap although a hair thicker than most.
This was gone in a flash, and not just because it was cool and refreshing. It was genuinely really good and something I'll go back to for sure.
The flavor notes give me an impression that this is either an export stout and not just a typical oatmeal stout. Big molasses sweetness and clearly defined hops are definitely there.
One of Breck's best beers and worthy of the 471 label if they ever bottle it.
EDIT: This review was for the "Thunder Stout" which is what the beer handles say at their pubs. Not sure if it was always their Oatmeal Stout or not, but I could swear it tasted different last year. Now? Not as much.

Had the beer at Flying Saucer in Houston, Texas.
Very good beer and definitely one of my more favorable stouts.
Dark beer with a nice creamy dark head. Very full bodied beer thats easy to drink.
I was very pleased with this beer. I do enjoy Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout and Young's but I would have to say this beer easily contends with those beers.

On nitro tap at Breckenridge Brew Pub downtown Denver.
By the way, this is not an RIS, it is simply their Oatmeal Stout on Nitro Tap.
A: Deep black, with a frothy caramel head. Big globs of soapy lace.
S: Smells of oats and sweet malts, hint of roastiness. Nothing over the top, but nice. No real hop profile or bitterness. A little sweetness seeps in at the finish.
T: Tastes of oat and slight roasted malts. Not a heck of a lot going on here, but a decent oatmeal stout nontheless.
M: The nitrogen adds great creamy smoothness, but unfortunately it is not backed up by a large body. The mouthfeel is somewhat watery.
D: Just average here. I made my way through it fairly quick, but without great enthusiasm.
Not a bad stout, but middle of the road for me.

Had a pint at the Grand Junction Alehouse today.
Beer poured black with a near perfect tan head. Nose was roasted malts with sweet chocolate lingering in the background. Taste was roasted malts, hints of coffee, sweet chocolate, with a light bittering hop finish. Mouthfeel was light to medium bodied and very smooth. Drinkability was good. This is a smooth drinking stout with plenty of character that would keep me coming back!

Very nice cascade effect, dark brownish with a very thick, creamy, light tan head that was very well retained.
Aroma was all roasted malt with a hint of something sweet, chocolate perhaps. Also you catch a very light hint of the oatmeal. Simple yet very well done.
The taste is really good, very nice roasted malt with a hint of hops. Reminds me of a good Irish Dry stout.
The beer has a medium body, rich, smooth, good carbonation level and extremely easy to drink. Perhaps one of the best Oatmeal Stouts that I have had to date.

Had on nitro-tap at the brewery.
On a recent visit I made the time to visit the brewery and I'm glad I did. I sampled several beers but the stout stood out. I had a pint from the nitro tap and wow was it good!
Very good beer, smooth on taste, very easy to drink and went well with my ribs. The nitro tap also made for a great show inside my glass. The staff at the bar (Stewart) was amazing, very friendly and I had a ball.

This was on nitro at the Breckenridge Brewery/BBQ and had the telltale cascading head. It was black with a light cream colored head, looked like a Guinness. Smells were slight roasted malts. The taste was roasted oats and malts. Nice beer, easy to drink, and went well with the rack of ribs. It smells

Amazing dark black color with great head and retnetion.
Smell is strong of licorice and roasted malts.
Taste is of strong black licorice with chocolate malts. Bitterness is low and well balanced for an RIS? My notes say RIS, how would one not have much bitterness? Oh well. I don't remember, just what I had on my notes.
Taste is typical nitro mouthfeel, but it leaves the beer a little watery.
This could make for a decent session as it's smooth and well balanced.

This was on the menu as being part of the Small Batch series.
A - 1/2" thick, dense, beige perfect collar from the nitro pour. Excellent retention. Great lace. Dark brown, black stout.
S - Mellow, low aroma. Mild roasted malt with a tangy presence in the nose.
T - Roasted malt. Coffee. More character than a Guiness or Murphy's on nitro. Roasted bitterness in the end and some apparent hops.
M - Medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Low carbonation. All relative to style.
D - Good drinkability. I expected more from a "Small Batch" series.
I think the nitro kind of takes away some from the characteer of this stout.

Poured into a standard pint glass, color is black, pretty solid, head is light tan, presenting 1/2" thick, then dissipating to a ring with some light lacing on the glass.
Smell is pretty creamy, light roast with a very solid coffee undertone.
Taste is relatively smooth, good solid flavor upfront, nice creaminess mixed with some solid roast and hint of coffee, chocolate also comes through well.
Mouthfeel is well blended, very present feel upfront with great lingering flavor.
Overall, a well done oatmeal stout, solid creaminess with a touch of stout roast and chocolate.

Nice and black, creamy but so-so head that varied a bit between several bottles, thin sheets of lace.
Nose is coffee, lots of chocolate, burnt malts, roasted malts.
Taste follows but roasty and burnt malts are a little more forward. However, the flavors are pretty well blended, and none particularly takes over the beer. It's a little more coffee stout like than oatmeal stout like IMO, but it's a very tasty beer either way.
The body is pretty full and carbonation is creamy and smooth.
I will certainly buy another sixer of this one. There aren't many oatmeal, dry Irish, or coffee stouts to be found around here (at least not real close) and I like to keep a moderate ABV stout on hand when I can.

A: Pours a very dark brown, nearly black. Has a small amount of light brown head, the color of a coffee with cream. Head looks nice but doesn't last long.
S: Strong chocolate smell with some hints of coffee. Smells quite nice, hopefully foreshadowing something good in the taste...
T: ... But sadly, not so much. The taste isn't bad by any means, but not memorable either. Has more of a coffee stout than outmeal stout taste, with quite a bit of bitterness. The taste is not particularly strong either way. There is also a slightly metalic undertone. The taste is decent for a stout, but didn't get that rich chocolatey, coffee flavor that is in the smell, and not much on the oatmeal side of things.
M: Thought the mouthfeel was okay. Reasonably creamly, medium bodied.
O: Overall, this is decent, but nothing memorable. I'd certainly drink another one if it was nearby, but this isn't a stout that I would purchase regularly. It's a tough market with so many flavorful dark beers out there, and this one doesn't stand out from the crowd.

A - beautiful dark chocolate opaque body with the faintest of perceptible cloudiness. And a pretty dark dark head that looks like equal parts mud shaving cream with a squirt of blood. Some light lacing.
S - strong chewing tobacco and sweet figs. Warning, after a few sips the powerful bitterness hides the aromas. Wet Mesquite and cherries.
T - aftertaste is quite bitter and hangs around until the moment just before it's no longer wanted. Strong herbal flavors.
M - Buttery but again a bit too bitter
D - overall good but only at the right price not worth driving too far.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle.
Pours a dark brown with small head in a Chimay chalice.
Aroma of dark chocolate, dark malts, caramel.
Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel for the style.
Flavors of dark roasted malts, dark coffee, espresso beans, bitter grassy hops, minerals. Bigger dark roasted than sweet malt flavor and not that big in body overall, but tasty for its style.

I poured this from a 12oz bottle into a clean pint glass.
Appearance: Pours nice and thick. Small head with tiny bubbles, less than one finger width. Very dark in appearance. The head dissipated quickly.
Smell: Sweet dark roasted caramel smell. Slight hint of floral hops.
Taste: Nutty coffee taste, deep roasted flavor however a slight herbal hop coupled with moderate carbonation gives it a good bite.
Mouth feel: clear coffee taste with a good balance of hop bitterness.
Overall: I think this beer is a good representation of what a stout should taste like. A nice nutty deep roast coffee and slight caramel are balanced nicely with a slight spicy hop characteristic. I am not sure what the oatmeal brings to this. Perhaps a more mealy type of malt taste? I am not sure. However I will definitely buy this again.

Bottle > Standard Pint
A - Pours a super dark brown, very minimal head, lacing isnt there.
S - Oats, malt, roasted chocolate, vanilla, some smokiness.
T - Roasted oats with some dark bitter chocolate malt, vanilla, a little hidden hop bite as well.
M - Dry finish, a little clingy biterness and roasted oat. A little thin for a stout, not bad though.
O - I wasnt expecting much headed into this, but its a decently smooth stout, has some nice flavors. If you're looking for a reasonably priced stout to go to, its not a bad choice.

A - nice beer w/ an average apperance. didn;t have a very dark head for a stout and lost it's head early
Smell - OK
Taste - not the strong taste you would expect from a stout. If they had brewed it to have a higher alcohol level this probably would have come out but that's the danger in brewing low alcohol level beer
M - not a full bodied feel
O - I've been pleased w/ beckenridges full offering except the terrible Vinalla porter )yuk)

A beer that ebbed & flowed for me. Starts high with good aroma, slides on taste, but finish and "walk away" feel is good...
A: Pours dark. Caramel head, dissipates quickly. Nice galaxy-looking lacing remains. Can see fingers through glass; still, quite dark.
S: Warm chocolate oatmeal cookies. Smooth, invitng. Hints of roasted malt, and an almost "Pepsi" scent. Regardless, an aroma I give high marks.
T: First reaction: "Hmm, this is unusual. Baffling, even." Immediately thin & watery. Choco-coffee flavor, buttery feel. Easy quaffing, but mainly because so thin.
M: Not bad, just very thin. Smooth & creamy enough. But, though perhaps crossing the line into unnecessarly gross, honestly felt like I was swishing around my own spit -- it's that thin.
O: Aroma excites; then falls (and tastes) a little flat. Not bad, just like a tall glass of Guinness isn't bad. But doesn't proclaim "Buy me again!"
Walk Away: The foregoing notwithstanding, it has a very pleasant, satisfying "walk away" (meaning that, while it was a little boring to drink, I left glad for the experience; very nice finish and aftertaste).
Repeat? I would certainly drink another if it was in my 'fridge; and I might buy another (single) if only because up the "highs" of the aroma on the front-end and the nice walk-away on the back (knowing that in between I would need to sit through a pleasant-enough, easy-drinking, quaffable beer that just is a bit thin to be tops).
Two Words: Either "Easy Drinkin'" or "Goes Flat"

A: Very dark, absolutely no head or lacing. Quite disappointing.
S: Lots of chocolate with some coffee aroma tossed in. Little to no detention of oats.
T: Personally, I detect quite a bit of coffee and dark chocolate. Not as sweet as the Oatmeal Stouts that I usually enjoy. Very stingy on the hops. For me this resembles a coffee stout, not an oatmeal.
M: Semi-heavy, with almost a bit of a smoky feel.
O: Very standard for a craft beer. Somewhat disappointing. I've found better quality at a similar price point.

Single bottle from Premier Gourmet in Buffalo - never had anything from Breckenridge before, so I thought I'd give them a try.
Poured into a small nonic. Chestnut-black in colour, pours somewhat thin. I have to say the head on this was quite impressive - thick and bubbly, lots of sticky lace. Survives as a thick ring.
Nose is coffee, cola, nuts, sweet malt and maybe a bit of roasted character.
Tastes fine. Incredibly easy to drink, very smooth. Initially quite sweet and malty, before the smokey, bitter finish takes over. Not what I expected - tastes a great deal like a porter.
The feel is what really sets this brew back - it doesn't feel like an oatmeal stout, or any kind of stout. It is quite thin and watery, giving it a feel much more akin to a porter.
A decent tasting oatmeal stout, something I certainly can see myself drinking again, and several at a time at that. However, it just doesn't taste or feel like an oatmeal stout, and so the scores reflect that.

A: Pours midnight black with a thin, tan, creme cap. The head quickly collapses, and there's no lacing. Maybe I served it too cold, as it might have been better at 50 than low-mid 40's. It's not the most visually interesting beer, but it's still a favorite.
S: DMS. Disappointing. Deep roasted caramel, but everything hides behind the cabbage smell. As it warms, though, notes of cocoa, licorice, and bourbon come through.
T: Roasty, smooth, and dark, but thin enough to be easy with just a slightly spicy, dry-dopped finish. It's a perfect balance of spice, carbonation, lightly bitter black malts, and cream. The oatmeal adds a full, smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Some sweet, juicy flavors linger into the finish.
I wasn't too impressed at first, and wondered why I remembered liking this so much in years past, but the flavor came through as a tasty reminder. It's a perfect oatmeal stout, straddling the thin line between an easy session beer and a more flavorful sipper.
At under 5% alcohol, it wouldn't make much of a winter warmer, but it's a perfect apres-ski beer in Breck, and a nice roasty stout for any other occasion.

12 oz pour into tulip. Bottle dated 7/22/12.
Very black pour with a very short brown foamy head that dissipated quickly leaving a tiny ring that held and laced well.
Aroma was a slightly roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. No hoppy notes.
Taste was chocolate forward which was somewhat surprising, a bit of coffee and caramel underneath that, some mild sweetness, and a very slight acidity to finish.
Mouthfeel was pretty light, well carbonated, and smooth. A little drying on the finish, no particular aftertaste.
Overall, while not a big flavor it was pleasant to drink and strangely refreshing. Halfway decent chocolate/coffee flavor with some mild malt roastiness, liked the sweetness. Good beer, very drinkable, but nothing exceptional.
