I was served this brew at a recent family get-together in Columbia. Not the kind of crew I would think would be walking around with an oatmeal stout (in-laws), so I was pleasantly surprised when I spotted this and stole one from a cooler. Side poured with standard vigor into a pint glass.

Appearance - Pours a deep brown color with a decent one finger head, minimal head retention and minimal lacing. No real surprises on the packaging either. Remarkably mediocre, basically just pours exactly how you would think an oatmeal stout would. Which is a good thing, I guess, since they didn't screw it up, just nothing stands out.

Smell - Roasted malts, some chocolate notes, coffee, and a hint of dark fruits. All very subdued though, again nothing really exciting.

Taste - Much the same as the aforementioned. While it was good, it wasn't great. The chocolate washed the palate first, followed by the fruits and hints of coffee and the malts.

Mouthfeel - Certainly could have been thicker for an oatmeal stout. There's more beef in three sips of Founders than in this whole beer. Just seemed pretty watery and thin. It was smooth and relatively creamy though.

Overall - I can sum this beer up in just a few words: good, not great. Nothing stands out about it at all. Would I drink it again for free? Sure. Would I buy it? Probably not.

Nice and black, creamy but so-so head that varied a bit between several bottles, thin sheets of lace.

Nose is coffee, lots of chocolate, burnt malts, roasted malts.

Taste follows but roasty and burnt malts are a little more forward. However, the flavors are pretty well blended, and none particularly takes over the beer. It's a little more coffee stout like than oatmeal stout like IMO, but it's a very tasty beer either way.

The body is pretty full and carbonation is creamy and smooth.

I will certainly buy another sixer of this one. There aren't many oatmeal, dry Irish, or coffee stouts to be found around here (at least not real close) and I like to keep a moderate ABV stout on hand when I can.

A: Pours a very dark brown, nearly black. Has a small amount of light brown head, the color of a coffee with cream. Head looks nice but doesn't last long.

S: Strong chocolate smell with some hints of coffee. Smells quite nice, hopefully foreshadowing something good in the taste...

T: ... But sadly, not so much. The taste isn't bad by any means, but not memorable either. Has more of a coffee stout than outmeal stout taste, with quite a bit of bitterness. The taste is not particularly strong either way. There is also a slightly metalic undertone. The taste is decent for a stout, but didn't get that rich chocolatey, coffee flavor that is in the smell, and not much on the oatmeal side of things.

M: Thought the mouthfeel was okay. Reasonably creamly, medium bodied.

O: Overall, this is decent, but nothing memorable. I'd certainly drink another one if it was nearby, but this isn't a stout that I would purchase regularly. It's a tough market with so many flavorful dark beers out there, and this one doesn't stand out from the crowd.

A - beautiful dark chocolate opaque body with the faintest of perceptible cloudiness. And a pretty dark dark head that looks like equal parts mud shaving cream with a squirt of blood. Some light lacing.

S - strong chewing tobacco and sweet figs. Warning, after a few sips the powerful bitterness hides the aromas. Wet Mesquite and cherries.

T - aftertaste is quite bitter and hangs around until the moment just before it's no longer wanted. Strong herbal flavors.

M - Buttery but again a bit too bitter

D - overall good but only at the right price not worth driving too far.
