Breckenridge 471 Small Batch Double IPA has a medium, creamy, off-white head and a brilliant, bright orange appearance, with heavy lacing and lots of streaming bubbles. The aroma is very fruity- like tangerine, to me, and sweet. Taste is the same with medium-roasted malt, white bread, sugar, pleasant, citrusy, hop bitterness, and no off flavors. One would never guess that it was 9.2% alcohol or that it was a 70 IBU ale. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and slick, and 471 Small Batch finishes mostly dry, sweet, easy drinking, and delicious. Overall, this is a most excellent beer, and I highly recommend it!

12 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a mildly hazy copper color. The head is a 2 finger offwhite shade. There's some respectable texturing and retention to be found in the latter.

S: The hops here are very earthy and floral in their tone, and also features a minty touch reminiscent of 90 Minute. All in all, though, the hop profile here doesn't particularly strike my fancy, nor does the malt backbone.

T: It's a bit maltier than I expected. I'm not sure if it's the age or whatnot - I just know the hop profile here isn't that powerful. At first, a touch of floral hops open things up, and before the boozy, sweet finish hits, I notice an enjoyable - but sadly vague and mild - midtaste of tropical fruits. Some floral hop qualities also return on the back end, which rubs me the wrong way combined with the mild booziness and strange umami tones.

M: I think this one is too heavy and sweet in texture. It's not *sweet* per se (in terms of flavor), just lacking the necessary dryness to cleanse and refresh the palate. That, and it brings out the crap aftertaste more strongly.

O: Not a great DIPA, and I don't think this one has the excuse of being an old bottle, either. Certainly nothing to drainpour, but there are too many great DIPAs out there to seek this one out again.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a cloudy pumpkin with a ruby hue. A two finger dense white head leaves some real nice lacing as it dissipates. Too hazy to see any carbonation.

S: A resinous blend of malts and hops. Not an overwhelming hop bomb with all the malt backing. Dark fermented fruits almost overpower the hop. A bit metallic.

T: Has the bitterness of an IPA which is almost unsuspecting from that aroma. Hits you with a floral bitter then lingers with more of a citrus and pine. Malts provide a bit of sweetness but arent too strong. Bit of alcohol on the backend but nothing too offensive.

M: Medium body that has a full feeling to it. Slightly low on the carbonation. Really not much burn from the 9.2 ABV. Not overly sticky for a strong IPA.

Overall it passes the test of a decent Double IPA. Lacking on the aroma is makes it up with a good hoppiness. Give it a shot if your into the style.

Pours a hazy amber with a moderate white head that dissipates quickly. Lots of floral and piney hops in aroma. Flavor is similarly strong, with the addition of some sweet citrus, caramel malt and soy sauce. A nice, aggressive IPA. Hoppiness isn’t as strong as in some IIPAs, but a solid entry.

Appearance- Pours a tiny head that immediately disappears, above a pale burnt orange color body. Moderate to little lacing remains as the beer is drank.

Smell- Of a standard ipa that one would expect. Mostly a hoppy smell with some mild citrus undertones.

Taste- More than what was expected from the smell. A full hop flavor takes over the mouth and slowly dissipates into a lingering mild hop aftertaste, a slight sweet bite is notable on the aftertaste. Not overly aggressive but a definite full flavor hop taste. I like the flavor a lot personally, due to the simpleness of it, it does not try to overpower or be more then it needs to be. It is simply an ipa.

Mouthfeel- Slight sting on the palette. Medium to light body. Overall nothing overly exciting, but equally not offensive.

Overall- Simple ipa. Too many I come across seem to be more than they need to. This is an example of enjoyable basic ipa. I would suggest for a first time ipa sampler.

This brew pours a cloudy orange/brown color with a 1.5 finger head, good carbonation and good lacing which stays on the glass until the end.

The smell is strong floral and citrus hops with pine, orange, mellon and grapefruit dominating.

The taste is too dominated by hops, none of the flavors in the smell come out; the taste is all hops. Oily hops are left on the tongue after swallowing.

The mouthfeel is thick and oily.

Overall this beer's taste does not live up to its appearance and smell; which is a shame because it looks and smells nice. If you are looking for a strait up hop bomb then give this a try.

Hazy, rouged amber with white film that leaves wispy trails.
Swampy overripe orange nose with some caramel underneath.
Seville marmalade and more caramel with deep citrus, resin and catty Simcoe hops.
Lemon pith finish and baby aspirin linger.
Medium to full, lots of chew, hot and sticky.

Big and harsh - both hot and rough hop notes without either mouthwatering IBUs or alluring aroma. Why do people keep using Fuggles. Smooths out as it warms, but doesn't get any more complex.

I think I'm done with Breckenridge for a while.

Deep amber with reddish tints. Solidly capped with an inch of whipped ecru foam. Hazy, too.

Floral hops, black pepper, and grapefruit pith aromas. Slight pine. Dry malts with a toast. Not that much maltiness evident yet.

Holy hop bitterness. Mouth-tingling and bleach bright. This time, all about the pine. A woody character is here, along with more astringent floral notes. Peppery again, but more gum-peeling in the spiciness caused by the booze. A straight mouth-zapper.

Drinks thicker, yet curdling with exuberant carb. Too much of it. Hard to swish and not easy to swallow. Booziness is up there, too.

Somewhat one-note. Far from elegant. Still a hop dream, if you need to brush your teeth with the stuff. Don't knock it 'til you try it.

471 IPA pours a clear golden color with a nice large creamy head. There is a strong floral, hoppy aroma, almost burns the nostrils. The taste is bold and hoppy taste. Good full flavor, but not a very dry aftertaste, but still finishes with a nice bitterness. Overall a nice bold IPA, enjoyable.

This was a 12oz bottle from a mixed sixer I made at Ye Old Spirit Shop in Frederick, MD.

Look: Orangeish copper color with a beige film and minimal carbonation. Lacing was also minimal with some patches here and there.

Smell: Aroma was of sour peaches and pineapple juice. Also some sweet malts detected.

Tate: The fruity sourness seemed to dominate at first, then the malts kicked in with notes of brown sugar and then a bitterness taht cleansed the palate for a fairly clean finish. The 9.2% ABV was virtually nonexistent on the palate – very impressive.

An ok beer, but not one of my favorites.

I try this beer from time to time, finally got a chance to have it on draft last night. The bottles high price always put me off from it since I never liked it much. The draft was malty sweet and there was an imbalance with the hops - I just don't feel they matched flavors well. Carbonation was Ok, did not taste the 9.2%ABV, it was hiding under the metalliac tang and the musty smell I got from it. The hops chosen did not please me either, the aroma was just bitter and "basement dusty mold".

Well, won't try it again for at least a year.

A: Pours a copper/amber color with 2 fingers worth of sticky head that retains well

S: Lots of piney hops jump out along with some earthiness and floral notes. Solid malt backbone with a touch of sweetness and alcohol

T: Follows the nose with piney floral hops and some sweetness. Nicely balanced yet still fairly hop forward with a lingering bitterness. Alcohol is barely noticeable

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Fairly sticky and oily

O: A solid DIPA with plenty of hoppy goodness while remaining balanced and highly drinkable for 9.2%. Decent value for a 4-pack as well

my buddy brought this up this weekend as its his favorite iipa, personally I think the other brews we drank over the weekend only highlighted the issues of this beer. we had much better ipas in his time up here (PtE, sucks, lagunitas ipa, devils backbone ipa). for me not enough of the hops comes through and it is entirely too malty. as others have indicated balance and flavors are off and i wouldn't buy it myself. I will likely only drink this again when I visit him. it is very smooth for such a high ABV beer, I just don't think it is a great iipa.

A: Pours a great orange amber color, with a nice creamy tan head about one finger, some slight laceing on glass.

S: Aroma is of sweet malts and citrus hops.slight caramel notes.

T: Taste is Highly hopped citus and piney mix with a subtle malty backbone holding it all together.

M: Mouthfeel isa bit on the thinner sidebut very nice.

O: Overall a very hoppy and enjoyable beer, I know the hop craze is getting out of popularity with some folks but I still love the big hoppy beers. Very well balanced with a very enjoyable taste.

On tap in Denver.

A: Clear copper, a little haze to it. Nice foamy head that lasts a while.

S: Malt stands out over the hops. Usually I prefer my IIPAs the other way around.

T: Malt forward beer. But still a decent imperial. Alcohol isn't noticeable at all.

M: Creamy. Nice carbonation.

O: Pretty good stuff. At $3 a snifter during happy hour, I'll be back to get this again.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bright copper hue with a thin but sticky white head. Subdued aroma but it opens up more on the palate. Usual American hop suspects - Simcoe, Chinook, and Centennial listed. Pine with some orange zest and fresh thyme. Hops aren't aggressive but are vibrant and juicy. Malt lends a biscuit and light caramel flavor. A lingering sweetness softens however many IBUs are present. A solid DIPA with a nice hop oil texture. Not close to the best in the style but certainly enjoyable.

9.2% ABV confirmed. 22 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into an Odell 90 shilling pilsner glass in me friend's gaff in high altitude Fort Collins, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average.

Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a two finger beige colour head of nice cream and thickness, and very good retention for the high ABV. Body colour is a clear copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Typical appearance for the style.

Sm: Floral hops - in too high a density to be appealing. Lacks subtlety, to say the least. Candied caramel notes are heavy. A fairly strong aroma.

T: Candied caramel, a metallic note, and terrible wretched floral hopping - as badly executed as I've ever encountered. No alcohol comes through. Too sweet. This is quite bad; one of the poorest executed IPAs I've had in a long time. Absurdly imbalanced. Not at all tasty. Few redeeming characteristics; maybe the hint of pale malt in the foundation. Too bitter on the climax.

Mf: Smooth and wet; definitely too smooth. Artificial with a metallic twang. Doesn't suit the style well at all. Overcarbonated. A bit too thick.

Dr: Hard to drink; the taste is just so off-putting. One of the worst brews I've had from Breckenridge ever. This is a strong Avoid. Vote with your dollar and leave this on the shelf. The off flavours alone are enough to ruin it. ABV is well hidden. I don't think I'll finish this; this is going to my friend - if he'll have it.

1 pt 6 fl oz brown glass bottle served in a snifter, reviewed live:

A - Pours a semi-transparent copper color with two fingers of just off white, creamy head. Retention is solid given the high abv. Generic.

S - Sweet caramel, light citrus and pine hops notes, and a strange metallic note. Simple but seemingly balanced.

T - Heavy pale malts open to a strange metallic and orange/lemon note. Muted, dull hops on the finish. Bitterness comes through on the climax. No regard for balance whatsoever. Boozy throughout. Very poorly built. I'm missing the fresh hops notes.

M - Smooth, oily and wet.

D - The heavy alcohol, imbalance of flavors and off flavor make this one hard to drink. I'm not having it. Poor example of the style.

Pours a hazy copper to orange body with golden hues beneath the velvety white head, which dissolves quickly but maintains a consistent, sticky lacing around the glass.

Generous pine and citrus hops float from the glass including grapefruit or pineapple followed by a nice balance of sweet malt.

The flavor is similar with a more lasting malt profile and a tasty, tongue coating hop resin that includes the citrus and pine notes previously mentioned.

Medium to fuller in body with medium carbonation and a lingering resiny finish.

This is a nice balanced beer and the 9.2% abv is buried in here. The hop bite is nice and offset by the sweet malt towards the back of the tongue. Well done.

My wife picked this one up as a surprise, and what a treat this is. Looks and pours like a Two Hearted, if you know what I mean; all coppery, and dark and cloudy and yummy. Smells of sweet, somewhat roasted malt with floral and fruit hops, and not much pine on the nose. Taste is very good and balance, rising sweet malt at first, and then hops and bitterness that runs and runs...great sustain here. Mouthfeel is right there, and alcohol is contained with the profile, and carbonation is fuzzy and fussy and lovely and everything. I really like this brew.

Pours a burnt orange with a thin head that dissipates quickly.

Smells of orange, hop resin, bread, and booze.

Taste is similar to smell. The hop resin and bitterness linger on the back of the tongue which help balance the sweetness of the malt. Also, some citrus, grass, and a good amount of alcohol.

Medium body and carbonation.

Overall a delicious IPA. Definitely a great way to end the night.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Firestone Walker Double Jack.

A: Cloudy amber with giant particles and a two-finger, creamy, off-white head that lasted a long time and left a nice film. Great lacing.

S: Citrus, caramel malt. Nice.

T: Light to moderate sweetness and strong hop bitterness. Sweet caramel malt and citrus hops.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Very smooth.

O: This beer looks incredible with huge particles and great lacing. It's really smooth too. I liked the look and feel of this beer better than the Firestone Walker Double Jack, but this beer didn't smell or taste quite as good at that one. Overall, I'd say it's a tie between the two.

Pours a hazy, golden-orange body wtih a very small white head that reduces to a white ring. I would have preferred a bigger, puffier head for this IPA.

S- Citrus, resinous, sweet and hoppy. Inviting.

T- Starts with some tart grapefruit notes, ends with a fruity, winey, hoppy aftertaste. Leaves some bitterness on the tongue which is faint and enjoyable.

M- Medium-high carbonation, little to no sign of booze, which is impressive considering the high ABV.

Overall, I enjoyed this brew. I nicely crafted IPA with some good complexity.

A - Pretty nice amber-orange color, some cloudiness, not a tremendous amount of head.
S - Strong hoppy aroma, full of dry, citrus smells.
T - Surprisingly not as hop-overpowering as I expected. Nice balanced flavors. For 9.2 ABV, you can barely taste the alcohol.
M - Fairly light mouthfeel, pretty smooth, dry.
O- Since I'm no hop-head, I drank this primarily because it was a small batch DIPA. I had expected to be bombarded with hops and spices, but to my surprise the beer was smooth, almost light for its ABV, and not nearly as dry and hoppy as I feared. A pleasant surprise that I'd consider drinking again.
