A: Pours a golden color with an appeasing pure white head. Pleasant retention that matches the style.

S: A rush of floral and earthy aromas engulf the nose. This smells more like that of an English IPA rather than an American IPA.

T: This is much more subtle in the hop aspect. The malts are present, but they do more to help the flavor than impair it. Do to the lack of hop bitterness associated with most American IPAs, the malts contribute a pleasant and complex character.

M: The malts create a chewy feel, and the carbonation is quite pleasant. Not much of a the hoppy dry, bitter texture that is expected.

O: This would be a perfect English IPA, but it lacks the resemblance of a true American style. However, it is still a unique brew and is worthy of a try.

Served from tap into a sampler tumbler. Poured golden yellow with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, skunk, skunk hop, and fruit hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, skunk, skunk hop, earth, and earth hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was an okay brew. The skunkiness on this one was overwhelming to me if I am completely honest. This fact made it about average for the style in my honest opinion. I really wish that the fruit hop character I picked up on in the aroma would have showed up in the flavor and the skunkiness has been toned back a little bit. This definitely would have helped its case. Glad I got to try this one, but doubt I will be doing so again.

Draft - Midwood Smokehouse (Charlotte, NC) - Forgot to ask for a room temperature glass so it arrived in a block of ice. Once it warmed...

A: Light hazy orange with gentle lacing and little to no head (did not see how the bartender poured it).

S: Grapefruit, orange zest, rose petals - floral.

T: Malt, citrus hop notes, floral - followed the nose, with a tinge of spice (cinnamon?) in the finish.

M: Creamy, chewy, dry & hop bitter finish.

O: The Four Friends brews all have a similar characteristic I can't quite put my finger on. They remind me of beers I've brewed, so I have to attribute that characteristic to freshness & quality ingredients. This is a really nice IPA & Jon (the brewer) is a super good guy who is only interested in churning out good stuff. Check it out.

Served at the brewery on tap.

Excellent looking IPA. Golden amber and slightly hazy. The head drops from 2 inches to a thin covering rather quickly. lots of lacing left in the glass. The carbonation is a bit higher than what I prefer however that is a personal thing

Good moderate mouthfeel and body. Perfect for the style. Slightly sticky.

Piney more than citrus in the nose and taste. Not at all a hop bomb. Some Malts come though to balance it out. The alcohol is dangerously absent in the taste as it is in most four friends beers.

Overall a very nice beer from this brewery. One that I hope sticks around for a while.

On tap in the tasting room at the brewery, served in a pint glass.

The beer pours a slightly cloudy amber/copper color with about two fingers worth of off white head that recedes quickly leaving behind lots of sticky lacing.

The piney hops dominate the nose. You have to really be looking to get the hint of sweet caramely malts.

The hops are just as present in the flavor as they are in the nose. Big piney, and to a lesser degree, citrusy hop character with a sweet, grainy malt backbone that is not quite big enough to balance it out. Moderately bitter, with lots of hop flavor. Medium bodied and moderately carbonated.

Overall, this is a decent beer, maybe not quite a great beer, but good. Rather enjoyable
