I always like when local, in-person trader, tone 77 stops by with a big box o' beer. I never know what I am going to find inside but I am never disappointed. I think of drinking beer like reading in that there is no such thing as bad reading nor is there truly bad beer drinking. Just like the late-'60's/early-'70's hippies, I will try anything once.
Quite a busy label: "America's Best-kept secret"; "Barrelled and numbered by Barrel Trolley"; "A seamless network of tracks, the covert trolley system of the 1920s was the ticket to an American revolution, the revolt of Prohibition. Connecting underground speakeasies, mobsters teamed to distribute barrels of their precious brew. Let your palate travel the underground flavor network of this Belgian-style wheat ale. Bright flavors of orange balanced by subtly spicy coriander make this unfiltered ale a reason to celebrate. Raise your glass for 'This is a plea for beer!'"
I made sure to agitate this nicely in the bottle so as to have nothing residual remaining following the pour. I was successful and I had two fingers of dense French vanilla-colored head by the time that I was done. Color was a cloudy orangish-yellow. Nose had a definite spiciness, borne of the coriander but the yeast also played a part as it had a musty aspect as well. Mouthfeel was thin and watery and the taste was really lacking for the style. It was about as bland a wit as I have encountered for a while. Finish was equally bland and unobtrusive. You can do much better for yourself if you want to try a wit.

It seemed the smell of alcohol overwhelmed the spices.

Barrel Trolley Belgian White
12 oz. brown bottle, coded "2263 18:00 2E"
Appearance: Cloudy deep yellow-gold body. Creamy off-white head. Better than average head retention and lacing.
Smell: Soft coriander, sweetish wheat malt intertwined with notes of orange. Pleasant. Welcoming.
Taste: Malty sweet upfront with a distinct wheat character. Coriander and orange follow, and then linger into the finish. What's lacking is any distinct yeast character, and a touch of tartness, but it still gets by on its own. Moderate bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Moderate bitterness. Neither really meet the style guidelines, and it loses character without a crisper carbonic bite.
Overall: Not a bad beer at all, but not a very good example of a Belgian-style witbier. The flavor profile hits most of the right notes but it's full bodied, and full flavored... much more American in character. Still, there are no defects, and it's easy to drink.
