I have been here a few times now. I too wanted to like the Dublin Underground.
The place looks like a dive. It really does. There are not really places to sit down and have a drink and talk other than at the bar. It just totally lacks atmosphere.
There is a ton of really good taps on at any given time. I really cannot knock the quality of the taps at all. What I can knock is that the lines need a serious cleaning. I have had beers that are great then the next time you order a hoppy beer and get hints of chocolate in it. To create a nice compliment sandwitch. The beers were served in the proper glassware. Nice big snifters, Dogfish super glasses. That being said I was under poured on one of my beers and when you are talking about a 12oz pour....
The service was ok. The bartender really did not know anything about beer. She was wearing a tutu and heels working at a place that is trying to become a beer bar....Food came quickly and the order was correct. Friendly people at least.
The selection is out of this world. Tons of taps. I had a double bastard, Stone RIS, and something else that eludes me right now. Excellent selection.
The food was okay. Nothing special but decent for bar faire. No real complaints about the food. It was actually much better than I thought it would be.
People always complain about the prices at Mahar's. I laughed to myself while I was at this place. $8 for a 12 oz pour of a big beer is insanely expensive. In fact I would have only had one if I would have known. A bomber of double bastard costs less than the 12oz pour I had. Do you know why people are willing to pay more at good beer bars? Clean lines. Good people. Good atmosphere. I really wanted to like this place but they are going to have to decide what kind of establishment they want to be.

The review below is my original post. Since then (march 2010), my opinion has worsened. Though they receive special releases from distributors, its a waste as they can't go through kegs quick enough. I've been back a few times, trying to give the place the benefit of doubt, but its terrible. Expensive, and dirty beer lines. I was told by "the beer guy" that they don't regularly clean or even flush their lines, they just put something else on that's similar. Yeah, you can taste it, and it ain't good. While the draft list may seem semi-impressive, its not & this place just isn't worth your money.
I'm going to preface this review by saying that I really, really want to like The Dublin Underground, but just can't. My review will encompass the reasoning that are the result of a few visits and discussions about the place. We begin...
Atmosphere: "Chipped linoleum dive bar." And not, "Cool hipster dive", but sleazy 1980's-Times-Square-sleaze-but-without-the-crack-and-the-coked-up-strippers kind of dive. The place just looks and feels grimy. Perhaps a coat of paint to cover the dingy turtle-crap yellow walls would help. Besides that, the place is confused- Is it a beer bar? Is it a club? I don't think it knows. It can't seem to let go of it's Savannah roots. In fact, the receipt still says 'Savannah's" on it.
Quality: "Well hey!" you may exclaim at the selection of craft tap handles (more in the selection part of the review), however, thems needs to clean their lines something fierce. My Dales Pale tasted off, Arrogant Bastard had the same off-flavor, at least the Palo Santo was able to drown it out (I should hope so!) The point is, if you're going to pimp that many craft beer taps- CLEAN YOUR LINES. The people who are ordering that beer can tell.
Service: This seems to be a result of the establishment still not knowing what it is: Savannah's or The Dublin Underground. Sure the menu says that, but ummm... well.... uhhhh...
Selection: Stellar. No complaints on this part. Great selection of I'd say about 40 taps of primarily craft beers- Goose Island, Dogfish, Ommegang, Brown's, Stone... There's something for everyone including Youngs Double Chocolate Stout on nitro, bottles of 120, boxes of wine, bottles of liquor, a Grand Marnier shot machine (I s**t you not), and plenty of BMC for those in need. The place really covers the gamut.
Food: While the menu requests that you have patience as everything is made to order, that's not the impression I got from my food. The chicken on my salad was tough as if it had been cooked, frozen, and only recently reheated. The "homemade" dressing consisted of a cup of vegetable oil and little else.
$$$: The $64 bill for 2 meals (a salad & a sandwich) & 5 beers seems a bit exorbitant for the quality of the food. Perhaps if you just stick to the offerings on the $3 pint menu (tonight was Smithwicks) and not eat, you can get out without the wallet-rape.
