Nice atmosphere, great selection of quality beers - with a good twist of eccentricity and pretty good location.
The only problem is, that if you aren't one of their preferred regulars, they pretty much ignore you. I only make in there every couple of months, and I'm not there to but it's invariably been like this for a couple of years. So I'm not sure why everybody keeps talking about how great the service is. Even in the middle of the day, when there's hardly anybody else at the bar, the bartenders are more concerned with chatting with their buds then they are about getting you a beer (or taking your money for the one you finished 10 minutes beforehand).

Probably the best brewpub in Metro Detroit.
Service is always solid and everyone has a great knowledge of all of the beer.
Always have a great selection of beer on tap along with a delicious root beer. Really something for everyone with my personal favorites right now being the White Devill, DRIPA and the Creme Brule Java Stout. The taps rotate pretty frequently with something new popping up almost every week it seems.
As far as the food goes, I rated it a 5 because they will let you bring in whatever you want or have it delivered right there. They also have started doing wood fired pizza on the weekends which is fantastic.
They will fill a growler of most anything on tap and also have bottles to go. If you are looking for something specific be sure to ask, it might not always be on the menu as available to go or in the cooler out front.
All in all a fantastic brewpub that I would definitely recommend if you are in town.

Stopped in to pick up some brews for a trade and sample a few for myself. Big, airy, open bar with lots of seating that looks into the brewhouse. Not very busy for midday, but they don't offer much in the way of food, so not really a lunchtime crowd kind of place.
Selection was huge (all house beers) with about 15 different beers on tap, providing a large spectrum of beer styles to choose from, from lighter fare (english pale ale and Alt) to fruit beers (Apple Jacks and Blueberry Pancake Ale) to huge, dark, heavies like Dark Heathen, and Barrel Aged 4th Dementia. A few bottle selections available (again, all house brews) of about 8 to 10.
Service was attentive, not hovering, and the bartender poured my selections and boxed up my beer, glass, and shirt order without a fuss, even when I kept adding to my order. There is a very limited food menu available, meats, cheeses, and personal sized pizzas, but I did not try any food.
The draft selection, most of which is available in growlers to take home, are reasonably priced. Most beers in the 4 to 6 dollar range per serving, with growlers going for 12 to 18 bucks. Bottled beer is a bit pricey though, with each going for 6 to 10 bucks a piece (a $60 six pack?!?).
Overall, though, this is a destination brewery. You must make the trek here, try their brews fresh from the tap, and take some swag and beer home.

(Visited 08/2011): Kuhnhenn is located on the north side of Warren on Chicago Rd. There is a private parking lot.
The interior is open with the U-shaped bar in the center. Wood high back tables in the rest of the space. Brick, red and yellow motif. There is a chalkboard on the wall listing the beers on tap. In addition there is a cooler stocked with bottles of wine, mead and beer.
Kuhnhenn had around 15 taps on my visit, and my understanding is they are constantly changing and rotating. Some of the options on my visit were White Devil, Penetration Porter, Loonie Kuhnie Pale, Conundrum and Play In The Hay. Many bottles of mead on the menu too, including Black Jelly Bean, Raspberry Braggot and Elderberry Melomel. I also happened to be sitting next to ownership and got to try the Tripel Bock which was not officially on yet. Kuhnhenn also has various sample options like "Pick A Winner" and the "Kuhnhenn Paddle". All of the beers, meads, braggots and melomels are top notch.
Service at Kuhnhenn on a weekday afternoon was good for the entirety of my visit. Thorough knowledge of the beer list and friendly.
I did not have any food on my visit, and it looks like they have a pretty limited menu.
Overall this is a great brewpub and is recommended highly.

I've heard reviews all across the board, but mostly negative remarks regarding how poor the service is, that certain selections were not available or that they have little food. The 4 of us arrived around 7:30pm on a Friday night. Place was 3/4 full with some low & high tables available along with seats at the bar. We were greeted quickly by our waitress and she was overall friendly & helpful. Selection of beers was very good. I was amazed at the huge selection of meads & wines. Had sips of the the meads & wines & they were all superb. The beers varied gretly by style and I was impressed with every one. Friendly atmosphere. Nicely lit with hardwood floors, some tv's and a wrap around bar. Fun place. Another worker there was extremely helpful, chatty & brought free samples of wines & meads after talking with us. He was also very informative. Pizza, cheese & crackers & the like are available but they also allow you to bring in food. They concentrate of their strengths which is making excellent beer, wine & meads & the quality is tip top. Highly recommend.

Having grown up in MI and coming back several times a year from MN, I have never been to Kuhnhenn before! Off the beaten path a little but easy to find. As I walk in, there is a cooler right to your right filled with mead and wine. I was hoping to find some beers but no such luck, oh well. The bar forms a U around the taps and is fairly large. We had 4 people and a baby so we grabbed a hightop table. Waitress (Holly?) was fairly lukewarm towards us and I am not so sure I ever saw here smile but she grabbed our beers and kept checking up on us. Just drank and tried their DRIPA, Coffee Stout, and Mild. Didn’t try any food but looked like a fairly straight forward bar menu. Overall, great beer with an ok atmosphere.

Went to Kuhnhenn's the day after thanksgiving, had an overall good experience.
The beers tasted in the group include:
-Loco Yokel, Tang. Wit, Sicome Silly, DRIPA, White Devil, and American IPA.
Samples of: Strawberry Panty dropper and Cream Brule JAVA
Service was kinda slow but she was really nice.
Atmosphere was kinda lame, and the area that they were brewing in was not blocked off and a bit dirty.
Selection was between the medium to large side.
Quality: we all agreed that our first round picks were pretty average (the first 3 beers listed), but our second round (the next three beers) were close to if not world class.
My beers were the American IPA and the Sicome Silly, and the American IPA was one of best beers ive tried.

I moved to the Detroit area just over two months ago, and in that time, Kuhnhenn has definitely become my go-to spot. Great beer, and as previous reviewers have mentioned, they always have an extensive tap list to hit every beer drinker's tastes. Kuhnhenn also makes their own wines and meads, and have a huge selection of both on the menu. The atmosphere there is great as well, definitely a sharing environment, where you sometimes see people bringing in their own bottles to share. Have also seen people bring in their own board games and food, which is pretty cool considering the brewery's only food is crackers and cheese, and some frozen pizza offerings. The service has always been very good at Kuhnhenn as well, the staff is very knowledgeable and informative about their products.
I'm definitely looking forward to attending the Winter Solstice party, as I hear it is a great time!

I have been here several times, although I wish I had known this place existed when I actually lived in the Detroit area. It is a great bar to grab a craft beer. They have a long enough draught list to hit every taste, plus extensive mead and wine lists for any non-beer friends you might bring along. Just don't expect to find much worth eating in the food department, unless you really like free popcorn. They have a few items for purchase, but I prefer to fill up on beer or mead there and then hop over to one of many fine dining establishments in Royal Oak, where there are several great bottle shops.
You can also pick up bottles to go from Kunhenn of whatever they happen to have on hand.
Sometimes it gets a little loud in there on busy nights, but overall it is a favorite spot to visit in the area, and has a surprisingly nice ladies room for a beer bar.

This is the place to go after a day and a haf of a mind numbing "ltechnical" meeting of some doomed from the start government integrated product team meeting. You folks at TARDEC U know what I mean. For the rest of you, itt means great high octane American craft brews that will make u wish U lived in MI. The best of the best in tth Detroit area. Make it a point to stop in and learn something about what craft beer can. Be. Highly recommended from a guy who's been around many beer bars and brewpubs.
