Notes:
Deep amber in color, this English session bier is roasty and malty on the nose. It has a light mouthfeel with a toasty nutty flavor. Don’t be afraid of it’s dark appearance it is a very drinkable malty beverage.

On tap at Kuhnhenn. At the time of drinking this (3/30/2013), I believe the ABV was bumped up to about 4.5%, but nevertheless, still fairly low. Pours a color similar to polished wood - a nice, deep brown with copper showing where the light beams through. Decent clarity, capped with a dark beige head made of fine bubbles, leaving decent lacing behind.
The aroma is malty all day with a very solid caramel base. Good initial whiff, pretty robust considering the low alcohol content. After some of the initial caramel malt subsides, I get blasted with a nice little hint of cocoa powder. Opening up, some nuttiness comes out, and the beer even begins to take on a slight woody aroma. Very rustic, sweet, and malty without much to say in terms of hop character.
The taste is a little more bland than the aroma and slightly watered down, almost slightly acceptable and even permissible due to the low ABV. The base is mostly comprised of caramel malt as shown in the nose. I get a touch of cardboard on the back of the tongue, but it's quickly taken over by a bit of cocoa powder and a slight wood-and-nut combo, albeit still a bit muzzled in flavor. Mild grass notes pop out and finally reveal some hoppage in this brew. Finish is lightly bitter and nutty. Body on the thin side with medium carbonation and a dry finish.
Very well balanced and certainly easy to drink. The flavor leaves a little something to be desired, however this is still a nice choice to throw back when you're looking to drink for longer periods of time.

This growler is courtesy of my boss, who picked this up earlier this week.
This beer pours a light bodied cola brown in color with a one finger off white head that quickly turned to a lacing. The nose is almost pure toffee and definitely malty with no hop aromas or bitterness to speak of. It's very soft and candy esque. The flavors are nice and somewhat roasty. It's very malty with a touch of toffee and is an "off dry" with almost a brown ale type roast with just a hint of coffee. It has more flavor than you'd expect from the style. It is very, very light in body and overly sessionable. This is basically as easy drinking as it comes and has nice flavor as well. This is definitely one of the better representations of the style.

I had this on-tap at the Brewpub. Poured into a sample glass.
Appearance: Pours a deep, dark amber color with a mild creamy white head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass and leaves some lacing.
Smell: Quite mild. Bitter sweet with some dark fruit and a mild nuttiness.
Taste: Nutty with some roast and caramel. The finish is more of the same but a bit watery.
Mouthfeel: The body is on the thin side with tingly carbonation and a slick finish.
Overall: A solid session beer. A lot of flavor given the low abv. Quite easy to drink.
