Notes:
This is a Flanders Sour Brown Ale which has the characteristics of sherry with a sweet fruity aroma. It is dark reddish brown in color and is high in acidity, sweetness and sourness. This is a complex beer that should be imbibed with notice to it’s high alcohol content.

On draught at HopCat for the Wood and Wild Ale Festival 2012, into a tulip.
Deep brown, with burgundy highlights. No head, no lace. Nose of black cherries, currants, subtler chocolate covered berries and a light almost cranberry light tart note. Taste has more black cherry, light medicinal notes, chocolate covered cranberries, light tartness but a sweet Flanders Red-esque like malting. Sweet and sour, with a fuller thicker feel that appears less than 12.0%. A very drinkable Flanders Red/Oud Bruin.

Bottle pour courtesy of rivesb at Woodshop 7 held at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.
2011 vintage.
Pours a slightly murky dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with some nice cherry and malt aromas. Taste is much the same with an acidic quality on the finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is quite tasty and easy to drink with the nice cherry aromas and flavors.

12oz bottle poured into tulip - 2010 vintage
Pours a a browned deep cherry color with some golden and auburn hues. Thin head dissipates, leaving a collar of beige film.
Tart, sour cherry in the nose with a soft jammy tone. A bit of cherry pie and soft sweetness. Hints of acidity and vinegar with apples and red grape skin. Soft alcohol warmth.
Sour and fruity up front with plenty of cherry flavor. Oaky and lactic with some vinegar hints. Acidic and softly funky, with a continuing sour cherry pie flavor. Touches of red grape skin. Finishes dry, a little bitter, sour and warm.
Fuller medium body, lighter carbonation, sticky and full on the tongue. This is a little strong, but I really enjoyed the powerful sour cherry flavor.

I was able to try this one at the brew pub a couple of summers ago (oh yeah, it was freaking awesome) and was fortunate to receive a bottle of it in a trade. Bottled in 2010, review is from notes taken on 6/9/2012.
Appearance: Pour is a dark and murky brown color and pours essentially with no head whatsoever; with the darker body, it's kind of opaque, but not like a deep dark stout or anything; tiny strands of carbonation bubble up near the sides of the glass, which leads me to believe that the body won't be entirely dead which may be presumed based upon the zero-head factor on the pour; nothing is left behind on the sides of the glass - pretty much clean of any residue or lacing.
Smell: Oh yeah -- the two years in the bottle have allowed the malts to come out much more than I remember, and there is a strong caramel/butterscotch scent to it; pretty impressive sour and dark cherry scents as well -- reminiscent of a chocolate covered cherry complete with the sweet vanilla-esque syrup included; just smells like dessert.
Taste: Just about what I expected after the nose -- tons of malt, and it's very sweet (caramel, hints of some chocolate, vanilla); the cherries come in next, and there is a ton of them -- very tart and a bit funky; a little bit of alcohol... OK, actually there's a quite a bit of warm booziness but it just works so well as it blends in with the other big and bold flavors that one should expect from this brewery. Super solid, but definitely a sipper and 12 oz. will be plenty.
Mouthfeel: Thicker than I remember, it comes across fairly syrupy, but the carbonation is essentially non-existent leaving the palate a little bored; the only liveliness retained comes from the big booziness and it leaves the mouth tingly, and the belly is very warm from the acidity and alcohol. Not as good as I would have hoped for in this category, but still, not too shabby.
Overall: What this beer lacks in body, it certainly makes up for it in the smell and taste. As mentioned above, it's definitely a sipper with an ABV of 12%, and the flavors are so bold anyway, you don't need anymore than the single bottle, and that is something that could be shared with a pal, but I'm kind of greedy like that so I'll be killing it myself.

2010 Vintage
A: Deep, hazy, viscous brown pour with only faint head. A slim ring remains where the top of the beer meets the glass. Bubbles lazily wander their way up through the beer. 4
S: Vinegar, tart cherries, booze, and caramel malt create a sweet, yet sour aroma. It switches between boozy, malty, and sour nicely. 4.5
T: This has really mellowed out phenomenally well. The balance is that of a boozy offering that has really come together nicely. Fruity, almost bordering on cider-like. Tart cherries, vinegar dark fruits, and caramel malts again. Not really on the barnyard funk side of things, it's more sweet. I honestly am dumbfounded here. I really don't know what to say to describe this better. It's very interesting. 4
MF: Medium to heavy body, but sweetness takes away from the drinkability. 3.5
O: Took me by surprise. Love it, absolutely glad I tried it, just really confused by it. New experience where I wasn't expecting it. 4.5

A - Dark brown, almost black, with a reddish hue. Near white head, good retention, some spotty sudsy lace.
S - Bread, booze, cherries. Sweet malt permeates.
T - A hot shot of sour and cooked cherries riding on a wagon of booze and malt. Nice.
M - Light side of carb, but ok, the cooked an sour cherries really finish out the taste. Medium to full body.
D - I like it but one is more than enough!

Big props to Adam for scoring me this bottle from the 2011 winter solstice. Poured into a Kuhnhenn tulip he was so kind to gift me as well!
A: Pours a thick looking cherry colored amber color. Nice brown thin head that doesn't provide much lift, but settles into a very persistent ring around the edges.
N: A good dose of alcohol is what I notice immediately, followed by Ludens cough drop, cherry of course, aroma. Yet, a bit more robust and full. Great notes of vanilla and oak.
T: Big time cherry (even some Ludens)...A very nice sour cherry character with a good amount of tartness that really grabs at every corner of my mouth. Figs and prunes give it a nicely rounded character. My tongue is salivating for more. A bit of an alcohol feel, but nothing overwhelming.
M: Good dryness...a bit of an astringent after taste, but very enjoyable. The tartness stays around for a long time, as well as the really nice cherry.
D and O: Drinks like a Flanders Brown, with a bit more of an alcohol bite, and body. A pretty big beer, but a nice one to have tried.

2011 edition courtesy of Madvike. Thank you, Matt! The bottle shows the abv at 10.5%, not the 12% listed here.
Poured hard after an initial soft pour in order to produce some head. Puffed a full finger of almond fluff atop dark ruby base. Head is short lived and dissipates to still surface. Lacing isn't much to speak of.
Massive black fleshy cherry on the nose. I am an absolute sucker for hard black cherries and this fits the bill. Thankfully there's fresh vibrant fruit here and not disgusting medicinal flim flam.
Cherry hard up front, but more of the slightly tart lighter red cherry variety. Lactic with only a light tartness. Acidity is surprisingly low and I was hoping for more. The finish does display some artificial flavoring not unlike a cherry Jolly Rancher.
Carbonation is tame, body is medium and syrupy.
Overall, cherry is a bitch in a beer. I am fussy when it comes to the flavor and this beer, like Mr. Cash himself, walks the line. Not the best and not the worst.

Bottle from Masterski, thanks! From the 2011 Winter Solstice release. Snifter.
A: Dark reddish brown with some transparency and a finger of beige foam.
S: Pronounced cherry skin and flesh aroma that's quite sweet. There's a little vanilla as well. The cherry is really strong. Malt is bready and lingers in the background. There's an evident lactic sourness and a touch of wood and vinegar. Smells nice but the fruit seems a little artificial. Some alcohol is apparent.
T: Big cherry and vinegar notes with accompanying vanilla and a very light acidity. This is lactic in character with a mild tartness. Very sweet with some pie crust and bread notes. Alcohol is pretty well hidden for the ABV. There's an insistent cherry cough syrup cordial note that is somewhat detracting.
M: Medium body with lower medium carbonation.
Overall: Pretty good but the cherry flavor is straddles the medicinal line. Way out of style, obviously, and very sweet, but worth a try.

From 01/14/12 notes. Thanks to Thorpe429 for sharing this one.
a - Pours a dark reddish brown color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.
s - Smells of sour cherries, tart dark fruits, spices, fruity malts, vinegar, light oak.
t - Tastes of sour cherries and dark fruits, vinegar, oak, earthy notes, fruity malts, and roasted malts.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Definitely did not feel like 12% ABV.
o - Overall a very nice flanders. Not super sour but very tasty, and definitely did not feel like 12% ABV. Would like to have it again.

A: Dark ruby red, zero head, with some fine carbination activity.
S: Sweet cherries.
T: Cherries! Starting off malty sweet that shifts to a mildly tart red wine vinegar finish.
M: Juicy, fine carbination, finshing with a gentle sour pucker.
O: Not overly complex, but it does cherry very well with a nice balance between sweet & sour. Very drinkable, would never guess that is has 12% ABV. Also had this fresh on tap and thought it was a bit sweeter.

Pours a brownish ruby with slight head and lacing.
The aroma has a very sharp cherry to it, and smells considerably sugary sweet
The taste is first and foremost cherry. This is where it really shines. Soon after the cherry really fades into the base beer which is earthy and subtle. It's a bit tart in the finish, but the introduction is very nice and sour. The tap version reminded me a bit of cherry coke, but the bottled version tasted a lot more natural. Perhaps it was the extra carbonation.
The body is medium full and medium heavy in weight. The finish is mildly dry and sticky.
Overall, this was a very nice offering from Kunhenns. The drinkability is insane for the alcohol. I feel like I'm drinking a 6% beer. I'd love to have a couple of these, but it's a little pricey. For what it is, it's a pretty good value though.

12oz bottle into Portsmouth snifter. Thanks for this one, biga7346. 2010.
A: A rough pour yielded no head. The liquid is murky and very dark cherry in color.
S: Huge dominating notes of cherries. Black cherries, cherry juice, Maraschino cherries, sherry, you name it. If it’s got cherry, it smells like it’s in this beer. I get a hint of almond as well.
T: Black cherries dominate but there is a good amount of sweet fruit juice and sugar as well. The finish is full of lightly tart cherry skins, woody cherry pits and oak, and a hint of vanilla. This basically tastes like pure dark cherry juice concentrate with a splash of water. The alcohol is hidden very well. I was expecting some tartness, but there is hardly any.
M: Almost as flat as cherry juice. The body is very thick and the mouthfeel isn’t overly syrupy.
O: Too bad there weren’t some more bubbles in this one. Flavors were rich but nothing too special. The cherry flavors were authentic tasting though, and not syrupy. I was expecting more oak, more tartness, more bubbles. Not a bad beer, and it was fun to sip on, but I don’t need to have this again.

2011 bottle from the Winter Solstice.
A: Reddish-brown. Small amount of off-white foamy head.
S: Tart cherries with a hint of vinegar.
T: Immediate tart cherry followed by malty, vinegar finish.
M: Medium carbonation and medium bodied.
O: Very good beer. The bottled versio is much more sour than the tap version. The tap version tastes a lot more like cherry cough syrup.

On tap at the brewpub, second night of the Winter Solstice. A nice drinkable beer, in the style but a little on the sweeter side than the best examples of the style. Reddish, lacy. Good cherry, very malted ameliorating the potential sourness I would expect and like. Worth a try.

A- Pours a beautiful clear deep red with two fingers of creamy head which is surprising for the style. Head has good retention and leaves quite a bit of lacing.
S -- Huge cherry aroma, has a bit of a cherry candy character, but overall is pretty nice. Slightly tart, but no hints of oak.
T -- Mix of sweet and tart with massive cherry taste. The cherry component has elements of fresh tart cherries, cherry candy and only a slight medicinal aspect. Sweeter than I was expecting, though there is a nice tartness throughout, just not the dryness I prefer.
M - Medium mouthfeel that is slightly sticky but finishes a bit dry and bitter.
O - Knocking the sweetness down would elevate this for me, but still quite enjoyable.

a - opened the bottle and filled my unibroue tulip. poured an ominious red brown that settled in the glass almost purple. there was a small head that built upon pour but was gone by the time i checked again leaving only some sparse bubbling around the rim of the surface. some lacing could be seen sliding to the surface after some small swirling.
s - cherry tartness. nutmeg. grape. some vanilla-ish woody notes. smells really nice and has my mouth watering in anticipation.
t - wow. heavy. at first a fruit medley which then falls into an almost sangria-like explosion and then a quick flash of bitterness finishing with an in and out fruit medley explosion and booziness. somewhat brandy like. i really enjoy the flavor of this one. great cherriness.
m - pretty thick and rich. very sangria-like and boozy.
o - overall, a rather interesting beer. the booze is strong in this one, but the flavoring is nice.

Chilled bottle into a glass. From semibaked. Thanks!
A: Pours a clear reddish amber with very short-lived beige off-white agitation bubbles. I'd peg this as closer to 'still' than 'low-carb.'
S: Sour cherries, vanilla, brown sugar, mild acetic acid (vinegar).
T: Same flavors: sour cherries and vinegar give the beer a light acidity that is more than offset by vanilla, brown sugar, and chocolate. There's a lingering burn in the finish.
M: Medium-bodied with some pronounced burn in the finish.
O: It's pretty good, but not great.

Served on tap at Kuhnhenn in a tulip.
Appearance: My tulip arrives with a deep crimson brown colored liquid with a frothy pink head. A little bit of lace is left, but the head mostly dissipates before the glass is through.
Smell: This is definitely full in the nose. Sweet brown malt, tart cherries, cranberries, lactic vinegar, some oak, and a general spiciness all contribute. The aroma is much sweeter than sour.
Taste: The flavor follows the sweetness of the nose. There is a very strong malt presence. There is a nice spiciness here from the yeast, but its subdued nature lets me know it was not able to completely handle the full malt bill. Tart cherry flavors provides more of a foil to the sweetness rather than a true complement or dominance. Some cranberry and red grape flavors work with a lactic and vinegar flavor that are, again, in the background. A nice amount of oak and vanilla finish the flavor off. Either some age or a more aggressive yeast would do this beer wonders, I think.
Mouthfeel: This is definitely full bodied for this style, or at least it sits heavier on the tongue than others I have sampled. Kuhnhenn is definitely known for taking a style and imperializing (that is a word now) the hell out of it. The alcohol is slightly noticeable going down my throat, an accomplishment considering how high of an ABV it is. Somewhat lactic and vinegary, but this mouthfeel gets pushed behind the full-bodied sweetness.
Overall: This definitely falls on the sweet side of the spectrum when it comes to Oud Bruins, and it is higher than the normal alcohol range as well. The complexity was there, but I think I would have preferred it to have been toned down just a bit in the alcohol and sweetness department to let some of the other flavors shine through a little bit.

On tap at Kuhnhenn...
A- Dark mahogany with orange hues. Nice film of an off white, steady, stable head. Not much lacing.
S- Cherry is definitely the main component here. It has a dark warm chery cobbler aroma, as well as an ever so slightly tart nose. Some wood adds an earthy complexion to this.
T/M- Almost a very slightly tart, acidic, watered down cherry cough syrup. Bitter back end. Not horrible, but little goes a long way. Full bodied with a hidden carbonation that keeps this calm, but not dead on the palate.
O- Again, a little of this goes a very long way. One glass was sufficient for my party of 5 to all try some and be good. I liked it, but would have liked a bit more sour and a bit less syrup. Seriously though, huuuge Kudos on masking the alcohol- this drank like 5%... Crazy

Shared by someone at DLD. Don't remember your name, but thanks dude!
A: deep red, creamy tan head, decent retention, good clarity
S: huge waves of acid up front followed by thick oak which is almost musty, ripe cherries come through along with notes of leather and wood on the finish
T:Starts of with a dash of lactic acid, tart cherries and malt some through on the middle, finish is somewhat sweet, very bold complex
Mf: thick and syrupy, heat on the finish
O: huge flavors, a little on the sweet side for the style, some sourness but not enough, intense

2010 12oz bottle.
Thanks to GhettoFabulous for this great extra in our not so recent trade. Popped the cap very little hiss seems like low carbonation. Poured into Allagash tulip at about 45 degrees.
A: Aggressive pour down the center of the glass creates a half finger head that is gone within a few seconds. Just a very thing ring remains. This one is dark really deep dark cherry color. Only a hint of light shines through when held to the light. 3.0
S: Smells of pretty strong alcohol, cherries....cough syrup. Smell is strong but fairly one dimensional. 3.0
T: Super sour....puckering...vinegar..ehh..trying really hard to enjoy this one but I'm just not feeling it. I love sours / wild ales but this one is just not that good. 2.5
M: Mouthfeel is prickly with light carbonation. Not too slick or oily. 3.0
O: Overall really not enjoying this one too much. Its tough to put back. But glad I got to try it non the less. The Marrón Acidifié I also got in this trade was a hell of lot better than this one. 3.0

Another Kuhnhenn beer thanks to iceicebaby.
Bottle says 2010 on the label with "2/10" marked on the cap.
Once more I am greeted with a Kuhnhenn label that tells me little. At least this time I get an approximate date and a style. But abv would be very welcome (and I know they include this on some of their beers). What I do get is a nifty little picture of (I presume) George Washington chopping down a cherry tree with an axe the size of the Buster Sword (or the axe/hammer weapon that the executioner uses in the newest Resident Evil movie). Nevertheless, my policy of not reading reviews prior to reviewing myself meant that I just cracked an 11.5% beer at 5am (after a long shift at work) when I otherwise might have saved the beer for later. Guess I just need to be more careful of researching my Kuhnhenns.
Boy is this an ugly beer. Poured at height and still no head. It looked very hazy and yeasty as it left the bottle, and it collects in my snifter as a murky concoction that seems like a mixture of cola and Bordeaux.
The smell is something to ponder. It certainly has complexity. What it lacks, however, is subtlety and elegance. There's an initial wave of bourbon-y heat and caramel malt. Heavy, dense malt in fact. Vanilla and oak then work their way in. But underneath all of that is a raging sweetness just itching to spring forth. Licorice can be found, but not as much funk as I'd expect.
The taste is where the funk decides to make its stand. Very sour, puckering in fact. There's some significant must and damp dead earth. Additionally I am reminded of beers that use pedio or other bacteria. Cherry is certainly part of the flavor as well. However, Olde Brune expresses the cola flavors that I am continually exposed to by the style. Cherry cough syrup and strong boozy alcohol finish off the plethora of flavors here.
Boy is this beer boozy. Wait, am I in hell? With the caves and ragged clothing?? And the heat, my god, the heat! This beer burns and stings all the way down. The mouthfeel is thin and without significant body - the lack of carbonation is the likely culprit. Very dry and coating, the beer is showing the tell-tale signs of a sour. I am not acquainted with the style well enough to say if the sourness has gone overboard, but this is certainly the most sour (and most boozy) Old Bruin I have had to date.
Overall this is a big-time sipper because of the high alcohol and heavy sourness. But the flavor doesn't do enough for me to handle sipping on this for the hour plus that it necessitates. Sadly I don't think I will be finishing the bottle.

(A)- Pours a fairly dark brown burgundy color. Produced some tan colored froth that is sticking around for a bit. Plenty of lace here and there.
(S)- A nice earthy fruity profile. Some mild funk with a great sour/acid background. A really nice dry oaky middle too.
(T)- Very similar to the smell. A great dry oaky cherry sourness with some tart acidity and vinous vinegar-like characters behind it.
(M)- A nice mellow carbonation level. A brilliant balance of oak, fruit, and sour. The high ABV is also expertly hidden.
(D)- A great Oud Bruin to say the least. Oaky, fruity, and sour with a great balance and drinkability. A great example for the style even though it carries a hefty ABV level for the style.
