This is our 4th Dementia Olde Ale that has been bourbon barrel aged. This ale has an intense sweet caramel malt flavor and aroma that develops into a toffee/toasted marsh mellow like character.

Served at 54º cellar temperature into a Duvel tulip.
Tawny brown with glints of ruby when held to the light. About a fingers width of foam rises initially and settles quickly into a ring around the edge. The glassy surface reflects the light, like a still pool of oil. Random flecks of spotty lace adorn the glass.
Rich aroma of fried plantains, toasted almonds, rich toffee, vanilla bean, with a dose of mellow bourbon barrel underlying the sweeter notes. Impressive and nuanced.
Complex rich flavors of oak, vanilla, brown sugar, toasted coconut, almonds, and sweet homemade toffee. Chewy, syrupy, and rich, though balanced and not overly sweet. Long finish of oak barrel and toffee. Bourbon is sweet, lending vanilla and coconut, and a minimal amount of heat, though it's certainly present. Creamy and full bodied. Confectionary. Slightest numbing from the alcohol, but it's remarkably hidden in the taste. Well crafted in that respect, no single aspect dominates, yet they blend together so well. The barleywine retains it's rich toffee character, and marries seamlessly with the barrel.
Really nice, glad I had the chance to try it. Thanks Alex! Most generous, that guy.

A - Dark brown and murky. No lace. No head.
S - Fantastic. Ripe cooked dark fruits, so MUCH smell! Get drunk and happy just smelling it.
T - Big booze, cooked fruits, a meal in itself. I want more. The BA doesn't make it much woodier for me, just more complex.
M - Pretty. Thick , balanced. Yummy.
D - I only have the one. I wish I had a case.
