This is our 4th Dementia Olde Ale that has been bourbon barrel aged. This ale has an intense sweet caramel malt flavor and aroma that develops into a toffee/toasted marsh mellow like character.

This beer was served on draft at the Kuhnhenn Brewing Company taproom in Warren, Michigan. It arrived in a generic tulip, showing the deepest hues of nut brown. It held a one and a half finger head of yellowish cream, showing nice retention, and leaving geographic rings of lacing around the glass as it dissipated. A thick haze cut clarity, with no sediment noted. Carbonation appeared to be active, but the bubbles rose slowly in the thickness. The aroma was bright with massive caramel malt roast, sugary dextrins, and sweeter brown malts to match for the base. Mixing in were notes of sticky honey bourbon, floral pollen dryness, fresh vanilla, mossy oaky musk, and strawberry and plum freshness. With warmth came much more warmth and butter of the bourbon itself, along with raw cereal grain, roasted barley, and hazelnut skin. Our first impression was that, as in the nose, there was fantastically sweet malt base to match the big booziness, which showed some of the most wonderful bourbon smoothness we’ve encountered to date. As we sipped, the taste opened with fusel booze and black pepper spiciness, with massively thick woody bourbon, deep cherry and fig fruitiness, nutmeg spice, and syrupy roasted caramel malts. Moving to the peak was more of a mild chocolatey malt, with more of the sweetness of bourbon, woody dryness, melted brown sugars, rosehip, chalked toffees, raw butter, and the lightest nectary hop syrup. The end came with fruitiness of dark cherry sugars, continued thick roast and toast of caramel, toffees, and milk chocolate sweetness, and of course, that beautifully infused boozy core of woody bourbon and boozy spice. The aftertaste breathed of black pepper, bourbon flavoring, general fusel booziness, sticky caramel, pencil eraser, raw caramel malts, chalky yeast, and raw barley roast. The body was quite full, and the carbonation was medium. Each sip gave hearty slurp, sip, cream, froth, and finishing pop. The bubbles and sugars left a thick coating around the mouth, leaving it feeling oily and resiny, with surprisingly little astringency or dryness away from the softer twangs of boozy evaporation. The spice of booze lingered down the throat, giving prickle and warmth all the way down to the belly. The lips were left sticky, especially at the corners. The abv is big but expected, and despite this, the beer drinks insanely well.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was its flavoring. The smack of bourbon was so genuine, warm, inviting, and integrated, it seems hard to imagine the beer without it. This plays excellently off the hearty malt sweets of caramels, toffees, and roasty milk chocolates, acting as the unifying feature of smoothness to blend everything together. The booze is big, and this guy does everything in its power to hide that, much in the same way that Bourbon County is so sweet. Here we don’t come quite as close to that ultimate balance, but we actually are left a bit of room for that bitterness of not only booze, but grain as well, to poke through. The nose is comparatively softer, but inclusive of most of what you want, while the sip is sticky, frothy, and robust. This all makes for an incredibly balanced yet unique beer that will leave you screaming for more.

Poured from a bottle into my Bruery snifter
it pours with very little head and kind of brown caramel color although
this may have been pour lighting in the room
anyway the smell is definite caramel toffee and very tad slight booze
taste is similar in caramel toffee i get the sweet on the backend possible marshmellow
it is not hott or boozy tasting and at 13.5% all i can say is wow
very smooth and sweet but not overly sweet
all one can say is this is amazing brew and may I have another please
definite up there on the top of my list
