2010.

Dark brown, but still translucent. No head. Flat. Aroma is pure oxidation. Cardboard and wet paper. Some caramel and little earthy wood. Taste is more of the same, but worse. Oxidized beyond enjoyment. Caramel, wood, toast, burnt sugar. Medium bodied and alcoholic. mild bitterness.
Not sure what the big draw is on this beer. I've had it a few times now and have never enjoyed it.

Very dark brown throughout. Even the edges are the darkest of browns. There is effectively zero visible carbonation after an aggressive pour. A few large bubbles appear at the center/top of the liquid, but effectively, this looks still. I suppose this is the only disapointing aspect of this beer, but the appearance becomes altogether meaningless after tasting this.

Fantastic aroma, though the flavor is even better. The aroma is a wonderful combination of melted caramel candies, chocolate covered marshmallows, maple syrup, and an earthy/honey sweetness. Complete and expressive.

An absurdly good (non barrel-aged) old ale. There is so much complexity here, usually found only in beers of this style that have been barrel-aged. Layers of dark fruits, caramels and toffees, mild chocolate and marshmallow, and maple sweetness coat the tongue. The alcohol is remarkably well hidden. I haven't had the opportunity to try this beer fresh, but I'm happy I sat on this one for the length I did.

Medium bodied with very low carbonation. Slightly chewy, coating, oily. Lovely and decadent.

My favorite of a favorite style. Perfection. Looking forward to opening the barrel-aged one next.

A. Extremely dark brown. No light comes through. Very limited, tan head and no lacing. Almost seems like a deep liquor.

S. Very nice malty, nutty scent. Thick. Caramel in there.

T. That is arguably the smoothest beer I've ever had. Beautiful toffee blended with a floralness. Nice nut taste. There's a cotton-candy taste to it. Love it.

M. Nice sweet tingle.

O. Certainly this is the best ale that I've ever had. Absolutely the smoothest most wonderful ale I've tried.

Fairly aggressively poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Kuhnhenn branded snifter (thanks to Czar_Chasm for both)

Pours a deep, dark amber capped with a two finger semi-fizzy light beige head. Fair retention, no lacing. A lot of booziness on the nose in addition to huge dark fruit and caramel notes. Caramel, dark fruit specifically black cherry, hints of toffee carry through the very boozy finish. Full bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel which sticks a bit to and coats the inside of the mouth. An excellent brew which is one of the strongest abv old ales I've had. However, the booziness works with this sipper as it is fairly well-balanced even though it trends on the sweeter side. A perfect after-dinner beer and also plays well as a nightcap.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet. The bottle says its from 2010.

Appearance: Pours a dark mahogany color with some light coming through the pour. There is just a small layer of light tan head that goes away very quickly.

Smell: As expected, this is a really sweet one. I'm getting a bunch of dark fruit and some caramel malt. I'm getting some heat in my nose from the alcohol. There is a mild vanilla note that shows up too.

Taste: Not as sweet as the smell indicated, but still very sweet. Tons of dark fruit and brown sugar with some caramel malt. The soft vanilla is there as well. There is a very slight tartness that goes along with the dark fruit. Towards the end of the sip, I'm getting some warming alcohol along with a bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the thick, syrupy side with tingly carbonation and a very dry finish.

Overall: This is a really nice desert beer. I didn't expect the slightly tart note, but it didn't seem out of place. I enjoyed this one and would love to have more in the future.

2011 vintage. Poured from 12 oz bottle into 8 oz glass.

A- Pours a dark amber with a 1 finger tan head. Minimal lacing around the edge of the glass.

S- Sweet amber malts, slight vanilla, some brown sugar. So sweet I guess.

T- Sweet toffee, toasted malts, slight roast and bitterness.

M- Full body and medium carbonation. Slick, viscous feel.

O- Very good old ale. On the sweeter side but still very good.

2011 bottle poured into a snifter.

a murky dark brown pour, slight amount of head which quickly turned into a tan ring of foam around the glass.

smells of caramel, chocolate, rum, nuts, raisins, coconut, vanilla.. this is a very sweet smelling drink and i can't wait to taste it.

ok enough waiting! holy cow this is fantastic. a dark caramel, dark chocolate, fruity sweet, very christmas-like ale. all of the sweetness of this drink masks the abv wonderfully to the point where it isn't noticeable at all (in the flavor). a nice sugary aftertaste of wet pecans.. seriously this is excellent.

full body, low carbonation.. a very heavy sipper! barely any feel of the alcohol, aside from a veru subtle warmth in the chest area.

this really is an excellent ale - i can't even imagine what the bourbon barrel aged 4d is like. this honestly feels like it's been barrel aged.

2009 bottle, served in a big wine glass, not too cold.

Smells like deep rich nutty caramel malt, with some floral and herbaceous notes, very nice indeed.

Tastes like a delicious malt bomb. Huge, sweet dark toffee/caramel, brown sugar, date. After a few seconds some restrained but discernible bitterness comes in, keeping it balanced and drinkable.

Nice beer!

A: Just like BB4D, it doesn't look very good. Almost no head, dark brown body.

S: Amazing. It's literally BB4D less bourbon character. Malt, vanilla, caramel, toffee.

Received this as an extra in a trade. Poured int my Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a nice deep dark almost garnet hue with a thinnish blanket of a head that faded to leave light wisps and a thin halo. Solid for the ABV.

S - Smell is of lots of sweet malts and dark fruits. Nice caramel too.

T - Taste is spot on with the nose. Lots of caramel toffee malts and sweetness. Good dark fruits, alcohol isnt really noticeable in the taste. Delicious.

M - Mouthfeel is really nice for an olde ale. Its definitely a sipper though, as it will creep up on you good.

O - Overall this was a delicious olde ale. One of my favourite styles, when done right it is absolutely delicious.

Served lightly chilled in an over sized wine glass.
2011 Vintage

Appearance: 4D pours thick and viscous and appears dark brown in the glass. The body is almost opaque, but a strong back light reveals deep red and then golden along the edges. A very rough pour only yields a few small tan coloured bubbles that can hardly be called a head. A swirl coats the glass in a thick yellow-tinted film and leaves heavy alcohol legs.

Smell: Oh man, now this is what I call a nose! Massive and super sweet (just as I like it). The initial nose consists of dark treacle, caramelized brown sugar, toffee, a touch of chocolate and two notes that I usually only associate with bourbon barrel-aged beers - toasted marshmallow and toasted coconut. As the beer warms, the nose become amazingly complex with notes including: Raisins, preserved figs, an earthy quality, a touch of leather, molasses and a very unexpected hint of Bamberg smoke.
There is a hint of the 13,5% noted in the nose, but it is wonderfully integrated with the other notes.

Taste: As expected, the initial flavour is quite sweet, with notes of dark treacle, dark caramel, toffee, sweet dark fruits (raisins, prunes and figs), toasted marshmallow and a little molasses. This is followed by an earthy character and a touch of chocolate. The finish is mildly bitter and prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying.
As the beer approaches room temperature, the dark fruits become more prominent, with dates also being noted.
As in the nose, a touch of the 13,5% is noted, but I feel it is an integral part of the flavour.

Mouthfeel: I am sure that most people would call this under carbonated, but for me it is just about perfect - very low level and ultra smooth. The body is full and quite sticky.

Overall: 4D is a phenomenal old ale, I will certainly be buying a few more bottles as soon as I get the chance and trying my best to trade for some of the bourbon edition. Highly recommended for any lover of big, sweet beers.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, 2010 vintage. Pours dense and hazy dark reddish copper color with a small khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some nice lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of huge raisin, caramel, toffee, prune, toast, tobacco, earth, wood, molasses, bread, cocoa, leather, and light herbal spiciness. Fantastic aromas with awesome balance and complexity. Taste of huge caramel, raisin, prune, molasses, toffee, tobacco, toast, leather, cocoa, earth, wood, and light herbal spiciness. Light herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, toffee, caramel, molasses, tobacco, earth, wood, toast, and light herbal spiciness on the finish for a while. Fantastic flavor balance and complexity; with no cloying flavors at all despite the long finish. light-medium carbonation and full bodied; with an awesome creamy, thick, and slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is extremely well hidden for 13.5% with only a warming present after the finish. Definitely a sipper, but is still very smooth as such. Overall this is an absolutely incredible old ale! The age has done great things to this, and I will definitely hold on to the 2011 bottles I have. Hugely complex and balanced stuff.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.

A: Pours a beautiful garnet color that is on the purple side. There is a small white ring that sits on top. Limited carbonation bubbles rise to the top providing a lightly active appearance.

S: Strong dark fruits of plum, raisins, and figs commence the aroma. Sweet brown sugar and and earthiness finish it off. A light touch of alcohol finishes it off.

T: Similar to the aroma, but the dark fruits found in the nose are a bit limited in the taste. The sweetness from sugar comes through much more and the alcohol is hidden very well.

M: Medium bodied and lightly carbonated. A minor bite with the alcohol, but it is very limited.

O: I'm a big fan of old ales and this one is quite good. No major complaints here. Solid all around. Highly recommended.

Pretty fresh batch, so whatever that is.

Looks deadly, in a way that is deep, and dark brown. lacing, but not much head due to the high alcohol. I like the look of the 13.5 on the bottle.
It smells like sweet alcohol, i like it, molasses and brown sugar rolled over currants.
Every time i have drank a Kuhnhenn beer i have absolutely loved the alcohol flavors in it, they are always very present and warming, and never too hot or fusel. Alcohol soaked cherries and black currants, figs and pomegranate juice, brown sugar and vibrant maple syrup. Powdered donut flavors and sweetness that makes you want to lick your lips. Yum.
The body is medium with a decent amount of carbonation.

As with all the Kuhnhenn beers i have had, i really like this one.

A real nice orange glowing amber out the bottle, hits with a muted brown and faint orange/ruby body. There is nearly no head on this beer, barely even a collar makes it through of faint tan color. I'd score this average but the body color is quite nice I must admit.

Interesting nose. Malty richness with a wooden feel to it. Molasses turned down in a sort of chewy sense. Strangely feels a little spicy and salty. Interesting, this salt and sweet molasess character melds nicely I like it. There's a hint of heat.

Rich tasting with an almost Flanders cherry character. Finishes with a faint black pepper and spice and controlled quick heat, but not boozy. Malty rich with a very light body nearly wet, and splintery character. Hints at Scotch Ale style smoke also.

What an interesting brew. As I sip on this, I am craving BBQ pork. Very enjoyable, even though some factors don't hit the A mark. Would love to try the barrel aged version.

pours a murky, deep amber / mahogany tone while yielding a short-lived 1/4" beige head - to be expected given the big ABV here. the nose is fairly complex and enticing, offering a lot of dark fruit, caramel / toffee, molasses, and some vanilla. alcohol presence also evident.

all of the aforementioned pull through in the flavor. big dark fruit and caramel / toffee presence mingles with secondary notes of molasses, vanilla, and a touch of anise. chewy, full bodied mouthfeel with slightly below average carbonation.

overall there's a lot to like here; very, very tasty brew. (the barrel aged version, however, is in another league.)

Pours dark brown with red tinges along the edges. Completely still despite a vigorous pour.

Lots of fig in the aroma along with raisin, burnt molasses, caramel and a little booze.

A bit of a malt bomb. Still lots of raisin and fig, but the sugars dominate a bit more. Alcohol is slightly present, but fairly well hidden for the ABV.

Already sweet and medium to full bodied the almost non-existent carbonation enhances the syrupy aspect and makes it almost unbearable.

Overall just kind of average flavors and the low carbonation really enhances the poorer aspects. Definitely not a fan.

A dark reddish brown with only a very short lived thin film for head and it leaves zero lace

S lots of burnt brown sugar and rum soaked raisins, molasses and some teriyaki beef jerky smells better then it sounds, heavy on the soft caramels and a little booze but nothing compared to the 13.5% listed on the bottle

T sweeter then the smell somehow with just a little soy, tastes slightly oxidized and not as nice as the nose, some cherry liquor I didn't smell and a slightly nutty aspect

M not quite flat but very little carbonation, quite sticky on the lips but not much heat considering the strength, a little syrupy

O booze is well concealed and it smells great but not blowing me away in other areas, decent beer but I'm going too be well below the average with this one

I'm not sure what to make of this one, well concealed booze and it smells great but not quite what I was hoping for elsewhere. Even if this is a off bottle its still easy enough too drink

Pours out a really dark reddish brown with lots of off-white bubbles that quickly dissapate.
Smell is toasted caramel malts and raisin bread.
Taste is carmel malt and raisin bread. the alcohol isn't too strong here but the afterburn does give a hint of the abv power this beer has.
Mouthfeel is pretty sticky and flavor retention is good. Great sipin brew .
Overall this is a great Old Ale from a great company that I can't get around these parts.

Reviewing the Fourth Dementia (4D) from Kuhnhenn Brewing Company out of Michigan.
Score: 84

2011 vintage bottle served in a stemmed Hill Farmstead snifter glass and enjoyed on 05/20/12. Review is from notes.

Appearance: Pours a deep caramel color; almost like black mud. A thin layer of creamy dark khaki head settles to a thin foggy film. Poor lacing, with good retention/cling. 3.5/5

Smell: Primarily musty caramel malt with complementary notes of toffee and marshmallows. Swirling the beer reveals a little fig and brown sugar in the aroma. Modest booziness. The aroma is a bit harsh and caramel forward, but swirling before smelling seems to balance it out and make it more appealing. 3.75/5

Taste: Like the aroma, the palate is dominated by a musty and malty caramel flavor. The finish is toffee-ish. Just tons of boozy caramel/toffee/brown sugar malt here. Some fig flavor on the side of the tongue. Decent booziness to boot. 3.5/5

Mouthfeel: I am not sure if this is a bottling issue or how the beer was intended to be made, but my 4D is absolutely flat and lifeless. There is quite literally no carbonation here. Medium bodied. Super malty and just a little sugary. Syrupy-like mouthfeel. 3/5

Overall: Not a bad beer, but this brew is a far from balanced, slightly boozy sipper. I am not a fan of overly malty beers, so maybe, like Mother Of All Storms and Y2K, this just isn't my type beer. Personally, I do not understand the hype behind this one.

Recommendation: Worth trying at some point in your craft beer journey, if only to say that you've had it, but this beer is not worth seeking out unless you like boozy malt bombs (beers like Mother Of All Storms).

Pairings: Packets of Laughing Cow creamy Swiss cheese.

Cost: $8 for a 12 oz bottle.

A: deep dark opaque brown, bare vestige of a head, some motes of lace

S: sweet caramel-like malt, some hoppy oakiness

T: brown sugar, whiskey barrels, juicy malt, hoppy dryness

M: full, slightly sticky, alternating sweet and dry moments

O: as with other old ales, has a lot of barleywine-like characteristics - trying to keep my comparisons limited to Old Stock Ale and Founders Curmudgeon - this one runs a little sweeter and less complex than the Old Stock, making it more or less on par with the Curmudgeon. A good beer by any account, and since I've never seen it around before, it's probably one of those you should pick up when you see it, so you can try it for yourself.

A - Pours cherrywood with a one finger khaki head that dissipates at a good pace. Lacing is minimal...

S - Caramel, fig, raisin, cherry, and other sweet fruits. Not picking much in the way of alcohol. Nice...

T - Lots of caramel, fig, and molasses up front. Dark fruits come through in the finish. Raisin lingers in the aftertaste. There is alot going on here, but sweeet malt is definitely the driving force. Alcohol is well disguised...

M - Thick and syrupy. Carbonation is very light...

O - Really nice representation of the style. Alcohol comes across really smooth. Hoping to score on the BA version sometime in the near future...

Pours a dirty cola brown color with little to no head, meh.

The aroma has an intense raisin aroma with notes of caramel and toffee. Quite sweet. Some honey and booze soaked cherries; rum cake.

The taste starts off sweet like the aroma but does have somewhat of an earthy balance. Sweet caramel, honey, and prune juice kick things off and are expected in an old ale. Then comes a wave of burnt caramel that adds some needed bitterness and a strong tea like flavor that you find in amber ales. And just as the label suggests, I get the toasted marshmellow flavor. They really nailed that one, never tasted roasted marshmellow in a beer before. Some boozy cherry sweetness as well.

The feel is a bit of a mess. It is sticky, syrupy and yet some how dry?!? Significant amount of earthy bitterness balances out the crazy sweetness but it some how really drys the beer out. Bizarre. The lingering effects not entirely pleasant. I'm really not digg'n the feel.

I dunno, the beer has some big bold flavors but they seem to contrast each other. The beer needs a bitter offset but I find that they went too dry with an acrid bitterness. Doesn't blend as an old ale should. Perhaps it needs some major aging.

4th D Olde Ale, bottle bought at Whole Foods Tribeca for $6.99.

Appearance: Poured into my Lost Abbey chalice, 4D pours flat like a motherfucker. No head, no carbonation, no lacing, no retention. You know the drill. This is 4D for you.

Smell: As in the bourbon-barrel version, the nose is the winner here. Intense aromas all around! Chocolate, booze, port wine. Raisins, some nuts, cola-flavored chewing gum.

Taste: Follows nose, but the flatness kind of ruins the experience. A ton of chocolate, stickiness, heavy sweetness. Pedro Ximenez. Some musty hops around. Dark fruit, caramel. Vinous qualities. Overwhelming after a while.

Mouthfeel: Pretty bad, as in the BB version. Flat, hot, sticky, unbalanced. Zero carbonation. Burning booze.

Overall: I like the BB 4D, but regular 4D really doesn't have it. It is a sweet-and-booze bomb that is begging for some balance and complexity. I love old ales (Old Stock!!) but really can't deal with this on a regular basis and probably won't buy again.
